July is the last of our eleven month season and the programme is as follows:-
July 3rd * £5.00 * PETE COOPER & RICHARD BOLTON.
Superb fiddle and cello duets and some very pleasing singing from Pete who is one of Britain's most noted fiddle players.
July 10th * £5.00 * JIM CAUSLEY.
The most convincing of the new bunch of singers who have come into traditional song in the last few years with lovely accompaniments on the accordion.
July 17th * £5.00 * MANDY MURRAY.
Noted as one of the outstanding players of the anglo-concertina and an all-Ireland champion, she is also a remarkable singer.
July 24th * £5.00 * TRANSPORTS OF DELIGHT. .
Terry Masterson and Chris Littledale present their absorbing themed evening of the songs, poems and sounds of the things that move us about.
July 31st free admission * GRAND END OF SEASON OPEN NIGHT.
Our last night before our summer break is always a spirited, celebratory event with a great atmosphere. All performers welcome to take part.

5] THE FOLK DIARY
Most of the listings on the Sussex Folk Guide website are taken from the paper magazine, THE FOLK DIARY. Issue no 231 covers the months of June & July and this is now available. They are packed with adverts for various folk festivals, folk music record companies, specialist shops, instrument makers and other services as well as details of all the folk song and dance events in our area. As well there are four pages of reviews of recent folk music books, CDs and DVDs. To obtain copies of this free magazine as it is published, please send SAE's to Vic Smith at the address below. (Make sure that the SAE stamp meets the new postal charges!)
It is also the address to send album review copies to. Potential advertisers are also asked to contact Vic for a statement of our advertising rates. The copy date for the August/September 2008 was on June 30th but if you send copy TODAY (July 1st) you may just be able to get some advertising space.

8] REGULAR SESSIONS IN THE LEWES/BRIGHTON AREA

Bryan Creer has taken on the task of detailing these, but has made changes to the way this is presented. Here is what he says:-
I have given free rein to my inner geek and written a new version of the Sessions page that works out the date of the next of each session (except for the weekly ones where it seemed a bit pointless). This was inspired by the uselessness of "Fortnightly counting from 3rd October 2006".

9] THE GREAT NORTHERN TUNE BOOK

Former Sussex resident Matt Seattle, who returned to Lewes last year for a weekend of workshops, informs us that the new edition of The Great Northern Tune Book
(William Vickers' tunes) has now been published by EFDSS. For details look at

Doesn't seem to be any mention of one of the UK's best Song & Ale's which is being hosted in Sussex this weekend by Travelling Folk. Mind you, it's such a good one that it was sold out just 2 weeks after the flyer was released in January!!

Folk music certainly seems to be alive & well in Sussex doesn't it?

Vic, many thanks for noticing that 25th. October will bring the 100th. workshop at the Lewes Arms and for including all the workshops in your regular emails.

It's only possible because a varied team of us at the Lewes Arms are willing to do the work, though!
