Try breathing in a paper (not plastic) bag. The CO2 concentration can relax the diaphragm and stop the hiccups.

Otherwise, go to the Doctor if you've had them for a long time.

Hold your breath until you think you simply can't stand it any longer...then breathe very, very shallowly for a minute or two, hardly taking in any air. It should work. The buildup of CO2 will suppress the hiccup reflex. I've done this and it works, but you have to really hold on until it's darned uncomfortable.

Get a glass of cold water and drink it continuously but very slowly whilst performing a glottal stop at the same time. I have never known this to fail.

Heh, and I came to say what eanjay said: drink water upside down!

Stand up, hold a glass of water out in front of you at about waist level, then bend at the waist so that your lips will be at the rim of the glass on the side that's away from your legs. Tilt the glass slightly, away from your legs, so that you can drink from that far-side rim, You will have to hold your breath to do this without sputtering. Take two or three gulps, or even more if you can. Then you can straighten up. If the hiccups persist, repeat (you'll be bending lower this time to get to the water).

Something about the combination of holding breath, swallowing and the angle at which it's all being done (and maybe the diaphragm contraction from bending over?)... works for me every single time.

Beer, sadly but perhaps fortunately, there was not a drop of Jameson's left. That, and any single malt are the only alcohol containing beverages I might be inclined to have a rare sip of while alone. I'm by nature not much of a drinker, tend to nurse one or two drinks on social occasions until they are stale and warm, at which point I switch to soft drinks. But whisky has charms. ;-)

My older son used to have hiccups in utero (that means before he was born, for those who are befuddled with whisky) and even now, aged 32, often has them.

Having a baby hiccing away in one's womb is a very odd experience.......
