Since I was running the night I'll try to be objective. We had a decent sized audience which contained thirteen floor singers; very welcome first appearances by our own Al Whittle and a young girl, Thea Bainbridge, who sang a chilling version of "Lady Diamond". The residents were as reliable as ever. Brian was in very good form and well at home in a traditionally based club; he certainly appeared to be enjoying himself and received a most deserved reception at the end of the night. All in all a night over which it was a pleasure to preside.

Brian is terrific. A wiry bepectacled looking fellow with quite intense features that are surprisingly expressive when he sings. he plays two beautiful intruments - an oldish looking Martin Guitar and beautifully mellow sounding anglo concertina, which looks pretty old.

He can do the lot...... guitar accompaniment, concertina accompaniment and instrumental, unaccompanied.

The concertina instrumental he chose was dallas Rag, a piece that a lot of my generation sweated over as a guitar instrumental - courtesy of Stefan grossman!

there were several pieces from his new album - the one that blows me away is a version of The House carpenter - although he doesn't call it that. I expect you all know the ballad- and the bit where the lady has been spirited away by the demon lover, and she suddely sees his cloven hoof beneath his cloak. More than anything I thought of the ladies that ted Bundy and Neville heath and that sort of chap somehow inveigled into a vulnerable place. there must have been 'cloven hoof' moment when they realised just what they were in the presence of - great psychological realism. you have to be very special sort of singer to show a dumbass like me what a ballad is capable of.

having said that there chiarascuro - light and shade. theres a funny modernised rewrite of 7 drunken nights, a visual John Kirkpatrick joke

shit! I pressed something and it went up! when I didn't intend it to - perhaps that's gods way of telling me I'm talking shite.

Anyway - go and see him. I imagine the traditionalists will be most impressed with the long ballads and they are impressive . the accompaniments are thoughtful and sensitive. personally I have difficulty in geting to grips with them (Sir foodrage a sounds like a manic weightwatcher - can't get past that!) - but what Brian does, takes guts and commitment and talent. I doubt if you'll hear them done better.

the club itself was a new experience for me. several of the faces, I don't think I had seen since Sid Pritchett kept the trad folk haven at the Co-op. It was reassurng to know they were still alive. very few instrumentalists. they were unaccompanied. And I suppose they suffered a bit, cos with Brian you saw exactly how it should be done - the commitment, the expressiveness, etc. this is a kind of music - a bit like blues, that will take all your experience and then some!

i was sort of expecting a lot of irish people. they book a fair few Irish guests, and the sprtsman was a hell of an Irish pub, when I was gigging Irish pubs - just round the corner. there must be a lot of Irish in Long eaton, bt I didn't see any at the club not floorsinging anyway!

I hope I have written some fair comments, and it doesn't upset anyone. it will teach you not to solicit an opinion from an ignoramus like myself.

The Tiger is a well run and excellently MC-ed club. I would recommend it to anybody as a very friendly place.

I will probably be visiting again, now that i know where it is, as they DO book interesting guests. I'm not sure its really fair to burden them with my brand of non-folkmusic, so when I do go I probably won't take my guitar. I'm no great shakes as a traditional singer, it isn't what I do. And the clue is in the title TRADITIONS AT THE TIGER. You have to respect other people - that is their place, and its not right to invade it with whatever brand of nonsense is in my head that week!

Those of us on the west coast of the USA and Canada have to wait til a possible west coast visit in '09. Brian alleges this to be in the works. I'm very keen to hear him in person- his recorded work is terrific.
