I'm off to Jersey (one of the Channel Isles not New Jersey!) in late August/early September.
Does anyone know whether there are any music and/or song sessions I might pop into or any Mudcatters I might say hello to?
"... dancing and singing, bell ringing!"

Pop into the Maritime Museum and ask for Doug - he should know what's happening these days. (Oh and ask him if he needs any more of my CDs ;-)

If you sing loud enough I'll join in (from Alderney)!

Tom

I would suggest you connect with the NY Pinewoods Folk Music Society (they have a website) which lists lots of events and places in New Jersey.

Blimey

No one told me the Channel Islands had become the 51st state

Do the French know? (probably sold them behind our backs?)

Was the Queen included?

Got any good songs about chaining children up in cellars and beating them to death?

Different Jersey, leftie. This one grows lilies. The one you're thinking of grows potatoes.

Jersey, Channel Isles / Îles d'la Manche, (a group of islands in the English Channel.)
Grow both potatoes - Jersey Royals and Lillies - Amaryllis belladonna.

Mike

Les Iles Anglo-Normande surely.

If you go to the SCOFF (Southern Counties Folk Federation) website, there is a contact number for a Jersey Folk Club. However, it's been saying for some months that they're looking for a new home. Might be worth contacting the person named.

Alan - did you find the SCOFF website? I've just had a look and it says to contact Pat Clarke on 01534-736332 (evenings) for info on what was (or is?) the Island Folk Club.

Ask "Organic John" at Elsie`s. He can probably advise and sell you some fruit and veg. too.

A belated mea culpa:

Ah.. ..sorry bout that...I take my lumps on this one. Wrong Jersey,

tho that 51st state thing doesn't sound like a bad thing, esp. if I can take the PATH train there.

Blame it on the heat. Or senior momentitis.

Potatoes and lilies? Well no wonder: THIS Jersey (the NEW one lol) is known as the Garden State (as you can plainly read on the license plates of the thousands of cars stuck in traffic on the NJ Turnpike). NJ also has what is supposedly the largest Iris Gardens in the world. I've been there and the irises are quite lovely. All kinds of colors from yellow to apricot to purple and black and even green. Are they really the largest??

I would suspect othewise. But you don't wanna argue with no one from New Jersey ;-)

Thought I'd refresh this query, as I'm moving to St. Mary on the lovely island of Jersey at the end of this month. Permanently. Anyone have any updates? Be nice to meet some folkies to drink beer with :o)

Pete

"The one you're thinking of grows potatoes. "

Your thinking of Idaho! New Jersey does grow potatoes, but I would not say it is our biggest crop. Blueberries are much more well known. We have a lot of dairy farms.

Another thing you might try is a bit of a google about the activities of Helier Morris Men, who will no doubt be out and about some evening or other. You might get a bit of a session with them, or ask them about anything else going on.
