From: Jack Campin

Some time ago I asked a question here based on something I heard in an interview on Radio Scotland's "Pipeline" programme with G.S. MacLennan's brother. He mentioned that GS's first composed tune, "The Kilworth Hills", was based on a Russian song that he'd heard when Russian warships had been visiting Leith around 1899, and that the same song was the basis of the schmaltzy pop song "When the Carnival is Over". I wanted to know what the Russian song was.

I can't find the thread I started then, but a remark in thread 7307 gave me the answer: Stenka Razin. As it happened I had it on paper.

Has somebody got a translation of the words?

There is an English version at Wikipedia but I wouldn't have a clue whether it is a reasonable translation.

Briefly comparing the Russian and English, the translation appears fairly close in meaning, considering poetic constraints.

The best painting in the world is "Cossaks of the Zaporozh'e Write a Letter to the Sultan". Stenka Razin is in the back row, center.

Tell you what. After reading the translation, I think the ladies who complain that their blokes spend too much time in the pub with their mates should count themselves lucky:-)

Only kidding girls - Honest!

There is a slight difference in tune between Stenka Rasin and Carnival - But not so much as most people would notice.

D.
