So anyone bringing an electric guitar will be duly sentenced to The Acoustic Chair?

Wait!..... "Duly Sentenced" means "hangin' from a White Oak Tree"! How could I forget?

We DO seem to get more than our share of feedback here without amps, though....

Hey, here's a shocking (or if reiterated, revolting) suggestion. Are there enough songs this side of Jimmy Murphy, The Bonneville Dam and chants of "Ohmmmmmmmmmm......" to do an Electricity Workshop?

Or should we stick to "Blow The Candle Out", and the like, with Carlie Baum at announcement time giving unplugs from our sponsors?

I think Severn's oscillating sine wave of high-voltage punnery is beginning to induce some reactive impedance. Never mind, he's promised to wave as he goes phi.

Charley, it's probably way too early for anything to be decided about the shantey workshop(s).

In general the final decisions about workshops and leaders can't be made for weeks yet. At this point the committee don't know who is coming; there are Invited Guests who can't give a final answer; and we don't know which non-Mudcat "regulars" will be coming. All of those people need to be considered in setting up the program.

The Program Committee has a huge jigsaw puzzle to assemble. It takes a LOT of meetings, e-mails and phone calls. (Taking so many things into consideration has a lot to do with the outstanding quality of the program year after year.)

Plus, some of these inconsiderate, lazy Committee people are going to music weeks and taking other vacations right now ;-D so they don't have the "face time" needed to discuss and decide. (I'm just jealous because I'm not taking any vacation this year.)

Since we first invited Mudcatters to the Getaway we have finished the program much earlier than previously, and published it on line. [I say "we," but I am just a kibitzer this year.] But "much earlier" means, say, two weeks before the Getaway instead of the Wednesday before.

What most of us do in fact is take a look at what has been suggested, think of a few things we'd like to contribute, and just polish up some of our favorites in the expectation that during the weekend we'll get -- or make -- a chance to sing some of 'em.

That's especially true for potential workshop leaders. They are leaders because they have a lot of love and appreciation for their subject and have a large repertoire. Most have far too many songs they'd like to do and things they'd like to say. My best advice is, if you're hoping to lead something, think a bit about what you'd like to do or say but remember most of the time is spent letting the participants participate. The workshop is likely to take on a life of its own and go in its own direction once it takes off anyway.

Here's another person interested in leading a song at a C. Fox Smith workshop, Jennifer Woods. She would like to lead "Home, Boys, Home," a World War 1 poem which Smith titled "Homeward" but since has passed into the folk song world by a different title.

There's a long Mudcat thread which discusses the origin of this song. It's a fine song to listen to and has probably been recorded more often than any other C. Fox Smith poem to date.

Charley Noble

The C. Fox Smith workshop is really happening.

If there are others who would like to lead a song, I'm happy to facilitate that. It would be sad if everyone showed up wanting to lead the same song, which is unlikely but I expect without some advance PM planning someone would in fact be disappointed, and why have that happen? About six people have already contacted me via PM about their favorite candidates. And one person is intrepid enough to want to work with a poem which no one has adapted for singing.

There's also room for people who make their decisions on the weekend itself, because this workshop is closest to the toilets or whatever. We can accommodate.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

There's nothing posted on the FSGW site in the form of a complete accepted workshop list, even though the workshop leaders seem to have gotten confirmation and a few, such as Charley and SINSULL have posted their confirmations.

I know times are not scheduled yet and probably won't be worked out for a while, but is there any way we could get a complete listing of the workshop topics accepted in order to have time to locate and put appropriate songs to memory?

Not all of the workshops have been set, Severn. Mine was a leftover from last year when I had to cancel out at the last minute. My "confirmation" came in the form of "What do we call it?" "I've fallen and I can't get up" won't fit in my allotted square.

Patience. As the witch in the Wizard of OZ says "These things must be done delicately."

Okay, okay -- I know you guys are waiting with bated breath for a list of Getaway workshops, so here is a PRELIMINARY, SUBJECT-TO-CHANGE list. The actual schedule grid won't be ready for a while yet (we'll post a link when it is), and there are several workshop details still be be worked out or confirmed, but for now, here's the deal:

We plan mini-concerts by our Special Guests Elizabeth LaPrelle, The Beans, Murray Callahan, and the Kossoy Sisters, as well as Carole Etherton (SussexCarole) and Andrew McKay (Cranedriver), Judy Cook, Lisa Null, SilverSmith (Leadfingers & Maryrrf), and -- yes -- Bobert's Getaway Blues Band!

Once again, Jacqui is putting together a Mummers Play to be presented at the Saturday evening concert.

Workshops include:

American Traditional Songs (Colleen Cleveland, Judy Cook)
Autoharps, Zithers, & Many-Stringed Things (Dan Schatz, Rita Ferrara)
Ballads (Mary Smith, Colleen Cleveland)
Blues (Roger Himler)
Chorus Songs (Judy Cook, Darriel Day)
Country/Western Jam (Chance & Susette Shiver)
Dick Rodgers Remembered (Rita Ferrara, Mick Lane)
Doo-Wop (Ken Schatz, Flawn Williams)
The Family that Sings Together (Kossoy Sisters, The Beans, Elizabeth & Sandy LaPrelle)
Garden of Songs (Mary LaMarca, Murray Callahan)
Getaway Retrospective (Andy Wallace)
Ghoulies & Ghosties & Long-Leggity Beasties (Carly Gewirz)
Gospel (Ken Schatz, Elizabeth & Sandy LaPrelle)
Harmony (Kossoy Sisters, Julia Friend & ?)
Massage for Musicians (Maria Fakhoury)
Music Hall (Murray Callahan, Gail Snider)
19th-Century Historical Songs (Bob Clayton, Jennifer Woods)
The Oldest Profession - Mary Sullivan, Nancy King
Parodies & Other Humorous Songs (Dave Diamond, Micca Patterson)
Roots of the Music (Dick Greenhaus)
Sea Ballads & Foc's'le Songs (The Beans, John Roberts)
Sea Shanties (Dave Diamond, Barry Finn)
Self-Accompaniment (Mia Boynton, Bob Clayton)
Songs from Cicely Fox Smith (Charlie Ipcar)
Songs from the British Isles (John Roberts, Don Stallone)
Songwriters (Carole Etherton, Amiel Schotz, Amos Jessup)
Squeezeboxes (Andrew McKay, Don Stallone, George Ward)
Traditional & Regional Industries (Carole Etherton & Andrew McKay, George Stephens)
Transportation Songs (Lisa Null)
Utah Phillips (Kendall Morse, Dan Schatz, Mick Lane)
Vocal Focus (Mia Boynton)
Waltz Time (Kathy Westra)
Wassailing (John Roberts)
Whistle (Terry Silver)

WHEW! So if you thought there won't be enough to do at the Getaway, think again -- and remember to take your vitamins!

More details later....

Nancy

Do ya think I'll be able to juggle all these?
Blues (Roger Himler)
Country/Western Jam (Chance & Susette Shiver)
Doo-Wop (Ken Schatz, Flawn Williams)
Ghoulies & Ghosties & Long-Leggity Beasties (Carly Gewirz)
Gospel (Ken Schatz, Elizabeth & Sandy LaPrelle)
Harmony (Kossoy Sisters, Julia Friend & ?)
Massage for Musicians (Maria Fakhoury)
Music Hall (Murray Callahan, Gail Snider)

Songs from the British Isles (John Roberts, Don Stallone)
Songwriters (Carole Etherton, Amiel Schotz, Amos Jessup)
Vocal Focus (Mia Boynton)
Whistle (Terry Silver)

I'm sure some of them will overlap, so I'll have to play it by ear (Hey, there's a Workshop theme, eh?) but it sounds like we've got some good 'uns lined up.
(Not that the others aren't good too, but ya gotta prioritize, and I don't have the right equipment for some of the other workshops.)

I just signed up officially and paid.   I guess the next thing is packing.
