Subject: Tech: Mudcat photos - two suggestions From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 08 Jul 08 - 07:07 PM I'm talking about the photos you get when you click on Quick Links and then open up Members Photos and Info. I spell that out because I suspect that quite a lot of newer members may not be aware they are even there. The first suggestion, of course, is to make use of this facility, and put pictures up - it can add a lot to a conversation to have faces to put to the other people. It can add to the warmth - and it can also take some of the heat out of it, if it's the kind of conversation that is at risk of sour. So I urge people to make a point of supplying a photo - and also of checking that their photo is still up there, if they put it in some time ago, because things can go missing sometimes. The other suggestion may be unpractical, but if it is possible, I think it'd be rather fun. Click on this, 1000 Faces of Walthamstow and look and listen for a few moments. It's a slide show of people living in the London borough of Walthamstow, all sorts, taken on the street, with a song background while you watch it. You can just watch them going by, or stop and find out their names when you want to. I'd love something like that for Mudcatters, if some genius could get it set up. I wouldn't think it'd be all that hard, and I really think it would add something valuable to the Mudcat Community - and for various reasons, mostly to do with another current thread, right now that seems quite important. Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat photos - two suggestions From: Leadfingers Date: 08 Jul 08 - 07:34 PM Kevin - Geoff (Pene Azul) has been a bit otherwise engaged of late - I think the Members info page was HIS baby before other things got in the way . |
Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat photos - two suggestions From: katlaughing Date: 08 Jul 08 - 07:37 PM McGrath, where ya bin? **BG** Pene Azul/Jeff hasn't added to the Member photos, etc. in ages...real life and all that swamped him. We started a Mudcat album at myopera to which folks can contribute by sending them to Joe at joe@mudcat.com, or to BillD or me. (PM for those email addys.) Now, I'll follow your other link. It looks interesting! Thanks! |
Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat photos - two suggestions From: katlaughing Date: 08 Jul 08 - 07:54 PM Kevin, that is a really neat idea! I didn't have time to watch all 1,000 faces in the slideshow, so when I hit "exit slideshow" I found a pages with thumbnail pictures, so I could actually track how many I had actually watched by figuring out what was the last page I watched. Anyhow, it is neat. I know a person can set up a slideshow at flikr because I just had a pro-photographer do so when she took pix of my grandson. Not sure about the clicking to identify and putting music to it, though. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat photos - two suggestions From: Celtaddict Date: 08 Jul 08 - 11:06 PM Thanks, Kat, I would like to add some Sea Music Festival shots and did not realize (or remember) that there was a place set up! |
Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat photos - two suggestions From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 09 Jul 08 - 08:22 AM I had an idea there had been a few problems with the Members Photos, but I'd thought that'd been sorted. Doing it all through Flickr or something like that would make sense - with a few pointers in that direction on the Mudcat itself to help people find it. And the slide show facility is built in, though the neat thing with the Face of Walthamstow site is that the order can be switched around so it isn't just alphabetic but random, but that's a luxury. As for music, well, people can just stick something in the CD drive or whatever. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat photos - two suggestions From: Bat Goddess Date: 09 Jul 08 - 08:29 AM Any chance that someone might volunteer to take over Member Profiles? Linn |
Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat photos - two suggestions From: curmudgeon Date: 09 Jul 08 - 12:02 PM If one goes to the "Events" section of the Members Page, there are eleven sets of post-crash pictures. Perhaps no one is sending them in? |
Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat photos - two suggestions From: ClaireBear Date: 09 Jul 08 - 12:17 PM I've definitely sent in both a photo and a profile, post-crash. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat photos - two suggestions From: Girl Friday Date: 09 Jul 08 - 02:07 PM I started looking at the myopera site's mudcat photos and found Mumblin Len. Only he was playing a concertina and claimed to be someone called riggy racking. Anyone else spotted him ? |
Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat photos - two suggestions From: PoppaGator Date: 09 Jul 08 - 02:10 PM If nothing else can be done to reactivate the "archival" Member Photos section, perhaps a brief announcement could be added to the top of the page listing (as links) the names of members whose photos are available. Something like this, maybe: This set of Member Photos has remained unchanged since the Mudcat website crashed on [xx/xx/200x]; no member photos have been added since that date. However, a collection of more recently submitted photos can be found at [clicky for flickr]. If you wish to send pictures to share with fellow Mudcatters, send a PM to Joe Offer [and/or other instructions] and your contributions will be added to the Mudcat Flickr album. I've known about the Flickr alternative for a while, and indeed a couple of my photos ~ not of me, but of my home, pre- and post-Katrina ~ were among the first to be posted in the new space. However, it's obvious that many members remain unaware of this new development, so posting a permanent annoucement is probably a good idea. Perhaps there are one or two additional places to include this information besides the long-established Member Photo page; think about it... I was not aware that new "Events" photos have been accepted and posted since the fateful Crash. I'll have to go take a peek, and maybe acquire a few more faces that I can put with names. I don't imagine it would be quite so simple to create an alternative space for Member Profiles, as has been done for Member Photos. Maybe reactivation of the profiles page should be a higher priority than getting Member Photos back online. I have several pictures of myself in Member Photos, but I did not get around to writing and posting a profile in time to beat the crash. Ever since, I've had a good excuse not to bother assembling such a profile, heh heh. ;^) |
Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat photos - two suggestions From: Joe Offer Date: 09 Jul 08 - 02:31 PM We've had to set up temporary sites for photos and for MIDI files. There's information about the photo site in the FAQ. The MIDI files are at Jon Freeman's site - links to the MIDI files are provided in the threads where the lyrics appear. If somebody can suggest a better way to publicize these temporary functions, please let me know. Max and Jeff know how to fix the MIDI and Photo/Profile sections, but these jobs take time - and they just haven't had the time. It takes a lot just to handle the day-to-day maintenance. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat photos - two suggestions From: katlaughing Date: 09 Jul 08 - 02:57 PM A clarification: myopera and flikr are separate entities. The extra Mudcat photo album is hosted at myopera. |
Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat photos - two suggestions From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 09 Jul 08 - 03:17 PM But it doesn't seem to have a slideshow option. Right now, reminded by another thread asking after him, I've been looking at InOBU's flickr photostream, with one of his CDs playing on the PC. Brilliant! (Scroll along the pics to the ones about the firefighters...) |
Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat photos - two suggestions From: Haruo Date: 09 Jul 08 - 04:06 PM I just put a pic from the 2007 NW Folklife, Kantu Seatlo! Kantas Kanade", on my Flickr page, and I'd be thrilled if Joe or somebody could add it to the Mudcat My Opera collection. Haruo |
Subject: RE: Tech: Mudcat photos - two suggestions From: Little Robyn Date: 10 Jul 08 - 05:46 AM Hey! They're there! I sent in some photos from the Auckland Folk Festival when several Catters came to New Zealand with the Shellback Chorus. But nothing happened and I thought they were lost until I read curmudgeon's post above. I've just checked and there they are! Except, Auckland has been misspelled Aukland a couple of times. 8 pints is there and ColK and Jacko and..... Robyn |
