Ask Tim Dennehy - or Sean Garvey. both of whom are well within pint-drinking range of Miltown this week!

There are several versions of this in circulation. I'm told that Sean McCarthy wrote/adapted one version, which is commonly sung. There are older verses around.

I'll try to check further.

Tim Dennehy, in the notes to his 1993 album "A Winter's Tears", says of this one:

"I first heard the Kerry box player Breandán Ó Beaglaoich play this as a slow air. Breandán had got the words and air from his neighbour Tadhg Ó Flatharta in Baile Breac (West Kerry), a slightly adapted version of which can be heard here.
Simple yet evocative words match a very beautiful melody which Thomas Moore used for arguably his most popular song The Last Rose of Summer. "
