Hi -
I'm posting mostly to refresh this and bring it to the top of the Forum Menu.
For the record, "Blaenwern" is one of many tunes used for What a Friend We Have In Jesus - but it's not the usual tune for that song.
"Come Now Friends" sounds very familiar. I'll keep thinking.

Blaenwern is also a tune to "Love Divine All Loves Excelling" (on YouTube).

Thank you.   The mystery is now solved.   The words were especially written for a memorial service to No 158 Sqn RAF (WW2)to the tune of 'Love divine, all loves excelling'and will be sung again at this years service in Lissett church, East Yorkshire.

Tune is in the English Hymnal and many other popular hymn books.

I would have said the "normal" tune for Love Divine, All Loves Excelling is Hyfrydol. Turns out, that's not so clear.
I think I can safely say that Hyfrydol is the best-known tune for "Love Divine" in the U.S., but I may be wrong on that, too.

Jacqued, could you please post the lyrics for "Come Now Friends Here Met in Worship"?

Please to, though I can give no information about the author. And the only title I know is "The Hymn".

THE HYMN
Tune:   Blaenwern

Come now friends here met in worship,
Raise a song of thanks and praise.
Thanks for memory, thanks for friendship,
Thanks for life and length of days.
First we met in war and darkness,
Little choice but join the fight.
Now for years of hope and freedom,
Praise the Lord of peace and light.

In those days of warring madness -
Toile and sacrifice an care.
Yet we found a youthful gladness,
In the life we had to share.
Working for a common purpose,
Knowing hat we had to do.
Joined in life and tears and laughter,
What a comradeship we knew.

Sixty years of growth and living,
Separate us from the war.
Aging also brings forgiving,
Time can heal the deepest sore.
If our children face a future,
Built on justice, free from fear.
Praise the God who called to service
Those of us now gathered here.

Ed
