I will be there (can't wait !), as will Wild Flying Dove----we shall be staying on the Salcombe Regis campsite with the caravan,as I am getting too old for all the noise on the Festival campsite ! Obviously , we hope to see Leadfingers and others during the week (especially Sue the Borderer and numerous other Herbaceous Borderers !), and will most certainly be in The Bedford and the York & Faulkner as much as possible, although we are treating it as our "Summer Holiday" this year, and may well have a day or two off just to visit Beer, or Exmouth, or wherever !!

Nearest they ever came to a bar was in front and the nearest to a lemon was when it was cut up and placed on top of gin and tonic......

Ok I'll keep a welcome in my trailer in the Blackmore Gardens for 'Cats who would like to come for a lemonade and sign in.

Lemonade has gone up this year, i'm really sorry to say. I've decided that if you can prove you are a mudcat member, and tell me your mudcat name along with "i claim my mudcat lemonade" you can have a reduction. To you it will be £1. I'm also selling it in bottles at £1.50 with a refill of just £1.

I'm really looking forward to the fest, as usual, even tho the pitch fee has gone up, yet again! Not fair really cos so has the price of lemons and the cost of fuel.

I'll get a sheet printed out.

Hope this is the right place. The program has wrongly listed my guitar workshops on Monday and Tuesday as 'Masterclasses'. Very flattering but completely misleading! I will be doing my 'General Guitar Workshop' which is for EVERYONE regardless of ability. The same format as was when I used to do it four or five years back. Please don't be put off. The DH decided that we would downsize the car to save money - money that I will be blowing on the hire of a van to get all my stuff to Sidmouth.

I will bring my drum to beat for Herbaceous border, my guitar, maybe a few other instruments, all the things which used to fit into the large car we had.

Just at the moment I am looking after a young Swift which I am really hoping will have fledged by the end of the month - I really don't want to be feeding insects 7 times a day instead of singing and playing.

I on the other hand may possibly break several years' habit and end up in the Radway instead of the Volunteer one lunchtime ...it's been suggested to me that I should "out" myself with a concertina... I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not [grins]

I have the same problem with the Radway and my melodeon but I have always thought that the last thing the Radway needs is a bad melodeon player where as I think GF at the Volunteer deserves the odd bad singer (or should that be the bad odd singer in my case)

I'm not really going to abscond for more than one day or possibly two, as my heart belongs to the Volly (spent nearly two thirds of the week in there morning and night last year)... and I do have good reason to be outed... I need the practice in public before a gig later in the year. Never fear ... nobody will have to suffer me playing on my own as yet .. the world is relatively safe.

In the meantime, yes I agree GF needs the support of the odd bad singer - if you qualify, so do I !!! See you in there...

The Swan of course, tho' did seem last year that all the smokers went off there as they couldn't smoke indoors in the other pubs, and managed to get away with it under the back yard canopy!
(I thought the law said you could only smoke in an area that's open on 3 sides? or maybe that's just in my homeland of Scotland?)So much for fresh air!

Chas, there's also the Esplanade outside the Royal York and Faulkner where you (and anyone else) can dance or play with Herbaceous Border - evenings 6.00-700pm starting Sunday and mornings 11.00am-noon starting Monday.

This year the morning sessions are for everyone (including people who've never danced before) but the evening sessions will be geared to people with dancing experience (either with morris or ceilidh dancing)

I've mentioned this elsewhere on Mudcat, but I hope lots of singers are going to turn up for "The Way Through the Woods" which will be a series of workshops (mainly learning some excellent songs in harmony) leading to a show on the final day. Manor Pavilion is the place to go, time 11.30 am (Sun to Friday). We need your voices!!

The Swan,The Ship and the Lifeboat Club usually have sessions all the time.
The Black Swan,The Balfour,the bar in the High St by the bakers whose name I don't know have all had impromtu sessions.
Dukes run a brilliant open stage right on the sea-front for those inclined to perform as well as sponsoring acts in the evening.

Also Sidmouth Sailing Club 8pm onwards running Friday 1st to Thursday 7th (Friday 8th you're on your own!). Mostly English but French and American also played. We welcome Radway Refugees/Bedford Bailouts/Regulars/Visitors and those who just want a change, as the musical mix is increasing all the time.

My little adopted swift chick is plumping up and exercising its wings - a whole 35 gms heavy now, it was just 27 gm when found.

They need to be in the 40s to migrate to Africa, but there is time yet - and I am feeding wax moth larvae - the insectivorous bird eqivalent of cream cakes, I think.

I have booked the van, I'm finding the necessary items for cooking and sleeping, the weather is totally glorious - pack sun screen and insect repellant - July is always so busy.!!

Of course all Mudcatters are welcome at Doom, Gloom and Despondency at 4.30pm Thursday in the Faulkener Bar. (Must be one of the longest running fringe events by now, along with the MBS and the one that doesn't happen on Friday afternoon.)

Appropriately subdued dress and demeanour is required throughout this sombre occasion and you will be evicted for failing to comply. There is a TROPHY for the most depressing song.

However it has been getting a little too serious of late. Trying to make people laugh, especially the judges, is encouraged but please do it in a despondent manner! Ah, I remember when MBS Lynne's brother won with a rather sad song about traffic lights. Those were the days. One year the judges had to evict themselves for levity!

On the right on entering normally the Old Timey Session (I hope that's right)with mainly music but some voices, and on the left all day music, singing and anything else that may, or may not happen. At night it spreads throughout the entire place - but don't say I said that.

Ah! I've finally managed to get to the Mudcat and Sidmouth starting later this week - panic, panic!
Bad news! My camper has been off the road for over a month and at present its heart (ie engine) in bits on the floor of a van engine re-manufacturer!
Good news! The parts they have ordered should be delivered early tomorrow and its likely to be ready soon!
Bad news!   But it maybe not be ready until Friday (that is, if there are no major problems - that sound very threatening!) - and then I'd have to get it ready to come down to Sidmouth. Oh, b#gg#r!!
Good news! Thanks to Bob TB for posting the earlier note about the Doom, Gloom & Despondency Competition.
More good news! I've just found the DG&D records and have produced all the posters, fliers and admin forms etc.
Even more good news! Just to repeat: the competition starts at 4.30 SHARP on Thu 7 Aug in the Faulkner Lounge at the Royal York & Faulkner Hotel.
What we need now is up to 14 song entries fot the competition - tragic but funny too! I hope you are all composing a song as I write this!
Oh, yes, and we also need my camper to be ready by this Thu, if at all poss please!

So what were people's highspots then? I must admit that mine were, as usual the lunchtime sessions in the Volunteer with most of the usual suspects. Thanks to the In the Traditions sessions being included in the programme again (or whatever reason) there were more bodies this year, and some good singing and playing. I finally made it to the Radway (once), and actually played concertina two or three times for the first time in public, as well as singing ... oh and giving a talk on Lucy Broadwood at the Arts Centre . But I have to admit that I didn't really do any mainsteam stuff ... (and on the whole, didn't really miss it that much).

Haven't been for 3 years so don't know when the bunting was last used on The Esplanade but was sadly absent this year. Have heard through the grapevine that East Devon Distric Council still have it but refuse to hang it up because it might be - you've guessed it - a potential health & safety hazard! The insane bureaucrats have definitely taken over the world. Anyhow, have made my feelings known to the Sidmouth Tourist Office and Festival.

The firewoks were good though and it was great to see some international dance groups back again (Provence/Latvia).

All things considered, it was a very enjoyable Festival but there does still need to be more dancing along The Esplanade apart from the Sunday which is good.

Karen Tweed - though i know some will think it controversial but I thought it great to have such a female aspect to the festival (Jo Freya's Lal Project was great from this point of view to)

As the New Tavern is not very well marked, he probably means that when he said The Dove. Many people I spoke to, did not know the location of the New Tavern, even less of The Newt, which is another of the 'in phrases' many folkies use, which puzzle newbies.
The same applies to the use of the term 'Sidders' which I loathe, it's both twee, and exclusive.

Got there at last ,dear ---well done !! Anyway, as WFD says, we had a great time,and managed to have some days out of Sidmouth, ie in Budleigh Salterton, Otterton,Beer, and Branscome. I played a lot in the Bedford, as usual, mainly in the American Old Time Session, and met some nice Americans---- Jeff ,from Boston ( great banjo frailer and singer ) and Rod from Washington, who sang with Ric and me on the seafront. Also nice to meet and play with the Swiss lady and her banjo-playing husband from Penzance---anyone know their names ?? ( I think they"re in a group that plays at Bideford or somewhere). I also played with Doctor Rosie, late of Watford but now of Newcastle University, in the Radway----the first time I have EVER played there since starting to go to Sidmouth in 1965 !! All in all, a great Sidmouth for me/us...... despite the seemingly endless rain !! And the fireworks were really good, too.

It was lovely to put some more faces to names (and get a discount on my lemonade)(and jolly good it was too) and pay my first visit to the Anchor. Lifeboat night was amazing, and who was the guy who sang The Little Pot Stove?

For beautiful singing, perfect professionalism and generally being ever so good, my singing highlight was Karine Polwart, closely followed by Stream of Sound. I also loved Gog Magog and Windsor Morris joining forces to dance "Windsor Safari" in the sunshine on Friday...

For all those who have sent good wishes to Moira re: her brother, I've just heard that Jimmy is gradually getting stronger, though there's a long way to go.

Many thanks to Sidmouth Steppers for organising that procession which of course did not take place on Sunday morning. Amazingly the rain stopped in good time for it not to happen. And it was a lovely balmy evening for the torchlight procession on Friday.

Bubblyrat - I'm not familiar with the couple you mention (Swiss lady and banjo-playing husband). Think they might be from 'or somewhere', since it's about 100 miles from Penzance to Bideford. They would be very welcome here though.

I had a great time, especially at The Bedford, York and Faulkner and Anchor.

As was stated before, the lifeboat singaround at The Anchor was something special. I'd never had to wait so long to lead a song (nearly three hours!), but it was all so rousing I didn't mind at all.

I also discovered the afternoon mixed sessions at The Ship - great fun! I'd never heard Pugwash played on the tuba before!

I saw the first 4 groups of the Friday evening procession pass the Bedford, then I had to dash for my bus. Arrived back here on Saturday after a gruelling all-night trip across England to get the morning flight. Our bus driver seemed to think he was racing round Silverstone and not navigating the British highways and m'ways, so not much chance of getting a bit of shut-eye.. I was knackered when I got home!

That apart, I had a great time, good to meet up with old friends and make the acquaintance of some new ones as well.

Highlights for me, just like last year, Herbaceous Border and the Anchor Garden lunchtime ceilidhs. Whoever ordered the weather shouldn't be put in charge of that task next year!!

I have photos, but I don't have the time to sort 500+ photos and post the cream of them right now, so it'll be a while.

Brilliant week - as usual. Highlights for me were Show of Hands & the Pete Coe/Roy Bailey concerts where I stewarded at both. Then the sessions at the Anchor, Bedford & Swan. The sea was warm for the Middle Bar sing and the sun shone for the event that doesn't happen - what more could you want? See you all there next year

I was a collecting steward for the firs time this year so got to see places outside the Middle Bar. Admittedly that was mostly the Anchor Garden (couldn't go TOO far away!) but I heard a lot of people I wouldn't normally have done. Loved Toothless Mary, and the Mumming afternoon was brilliant. I was impressed byt the fact that, when it started raining, the audience was enjoying it so much they just stayed where they were.

Middle Bar was good (the accoustics in there are brilliant) but it will never be the same for me as it was in the glory days in the real Middle Bar. I actually heard someone telling someone else that the "Top Bar singers" were in the Anchor.

The ASBO tent on the campsite was good in the evening too.

Pity about the rain...maybe better next year?

And I will try and make the whole week this time!

I had a great week too, singing, playing, attending concerts and workshops, staying up too late, drinking too much Thatchers', doing daft fringe things, etc, etc.
The Festival seems to be going from strength to strength since the setbacks of a few years ago. I enjoyed most of the evening concerts I went to, but the John Tams/Barry Coope one rates top (narrowly)with me.
So pleased to hear that Moira's brother is improving, and a big tribute to Saro and Carolyn for coping with the masses in their very enjoyable workshop. I believe they said the performance was being recorded, but not sure whether that meant audio or video recording. I got a reasonable recording on my mini-disc anyhow.
Not sure who did "Little Pot Stove" on the Sea Songs night, as there are several MBS meembers who do it.

Sid as usual was what it always is.

Took me three days to get to the seafront.
Spent most of my days in the Radway.
Jolly nice it was too!
And really good to not be booked to do anything at all...
You get a really different perspective on the gig if, you aren't running around all the time.
Sidmouth changes and evolves, but, basically it's the same today as it was in the 70's

Back next year in some capacity, I suppose

I loved it... only thing is, I didn't get to do things in town till Wednesday onwards... Am upset I didn't get to sing at Ashby De La Zouch folk club (Sorry Lynne) or at the Middle Bar (sorry MBSs) or at the Faulkner (very) early singaround (Sorry Kitty and Tim)... I saved my voice for the ASBO marquee when I was really drunk and now my voice doesn't like me :(

Should be fine for Towersey though so I will attempt to get to the Barn to sing (sorry LTS ;p )lol And it's my Birthday on the Friday so lots of D&D from me ;)

Ruth Archer... I definitely wish to go to a song session with you... are you going to go to a singaround? Do you think you'll get to the late night session tent?

There were 13 entries with the top placings being as follows:-
1st with 99 pts Heather Redding with "Leonard Cohen Carols"
2nd with 89 pts Trish Santer with "Last Days of the Napoli"
3rd with 87 pts Phil Shrouds with "The Embalmer"
Idris Roker, the 2007 winner, decorated the trophy by putting the coffin in a mausoleum.

Well what a week of strange weather and discomfort with the Craft Marquee Traders.

I do hope Mudcat members visited the Craft Marquee, it was behind the wall next to the dance marqee in the Blackmore Gardens.

I had a pretty average week for Sidmouth even tho I didn't open the trailer on Tuesday until 2pm. Not a lot of point trying to sell lemonade in the rain.

The Gardens were disappointng this year. No dance demo stage (which could have had a roof incase of rain) and charging a fee to watch the dancing in the marquee. Last year it was all free. Many of my customers commented on this. On the dry days we had lots of picnics so the audiences were there, but as I say they were disappointed too. The childrens' entertainment was very good and Alex and his sister were stunning as usual.

I camped at King's Down Tail which was excellent, as per.

So all downhill till next year then!

I don't think you're right about dancing in the marquee being free last year. I certainly had to pay to watch the Smiffs in action, and wanted to get into something else which I'd have had to pay for. Maybe just some of the items were free of charge - although I have to admit that I have the impression that all the programmed events in there were ticket only.

Although I had a season ticket I never got in to see the teams dance in the Blackmore tent (too crowded and way too small a venue - scrimping on a bigger marquee for the craft fair I suppose). Missed the dance stage in the garden though; I really enjoyed it last year.

The Blackmore dance floor was made smaller this year because it was not fully utilised last year, also the clear grassed area was intended for lots of picnics in the sunshine. In the event, the Blackmore was insufferable in the heat of packed ceilidhs (Asha, Token Women), a major failing being that the side flaps could not be opened because of insufficient stewards and (as usual) fire regs and H&S meaning that everyone had to be broiled instead. There were similar problems in the Church House Lawn marquee last year. This needs sorting out using common sense - agreement to open side flaps to let in air and sufficient stewards to man them. Later in the week the breeze cooled the marquee.

The floor space available in the Blackmore marquee was smaller than last year because about a third had been lost to the craft section. However, the dance floor itself was not that much smaller because although it was shorter than last year it was also wider which made a better shape for dancing. The main loss was to the area put aside for sitting and standing which was far too small forcing the excess people on to the dance floor. Next year they should go back to the full size tent, with a full width dance floor occuping two thirds of the length of the tent, and the remaining third for the bar and socialising.

We did the best we could regards opening the sides. Apart from the entrance there were two ten foot openings which were manned and a number of vents on the other side. It is not feasible to have more openings because we do not have that many stewards available and if the sides were totally open then they would be impossible to police.

The entrances to the tent has to be manned to prevent free-loaders getting in, to control numbers for H&S and fire reasons, and to prevent drinks from being taken off of a licenced premises. We often struggled to control the three openings even with four stewards, occasional bar staff and security staff all pitching in! So more openings would be a logistical nightmare. As Steve points out, a breeze is far more effective than more openings in cooling the tent.

Can't do much about the oppressive regulations but hopefully next year there will be a fenced off, licenced area outside the tent to alleviate the over crowding.

That explains a lot !! We nearly died of hyperthermia at Warwick, due to the oppressive heat, and could not fathom out why in the name of the Blessed Cecil Sharp the side -curtains were kept shut !! Bollocks to Health & Safety---- let's have some common sense !!

I was told by a local that there had been complaints about the central grassed area of Blackmore Gardens being damaged by the craft tent last year, which was why there were craft stalls occupying part of what had been the dance tent, cutting down the space for ceilidhs.

There were indeed several noticable parallel lines on the ground in the centre of the grassed area but I don't remember there being a floor in the craft tent - can anyone confirm that there was? Or is the festival getting blamed for a different cause?

It's true about the marks on the grass being made by the craft tent last year. there was a plastic sheet laid down with rush matting ontop. the grass was wet and didn't a chance to dry out before the hot weather kicked in. the grass rotted beneath the sheet. it also happened in the marquee on the ham; don't you remember the foul smell? I would have thought the park keeper/council could have made a better job of repairing it tho. why didn't they returf it? it looked as tho they had just left nature to mend it. we traders aren't allowed to drive on the grass so all goods have to be trucked across to the craft marquee by sack trucks, trollies etc. I have to unhitch my trailer at the gate and man/woman-handle it into position. I can understand that the ground could be ploughed up in very wet weather, so i'm not complaining.

Finally back in Sweden after many Festivals. Among them Sidmouth.
Spent most time there between Herbaceous Border on the esplanade, and the Anchor Garden lunchtime ceilidhs. also via the Newt. Where Terry and I had a laugh or two.
Jacks bar in the cellar of the Bedford and The Ship were my other haunts.

Looked in on the Radway - mostly diddley stuff like the Swan Not my cup of tea. As was the main bar session in the Bedford.
Got some dots from John KP.at the Rugby Club.
Caught Derek's talk on RVW. That was good.
Sorry Surreysinger I missed your Lucy bit. Found out next day.
The Volunteer was too far up the street for me.
In fact I found the whole of Sidmouth was far too spread out.
Missed you Lemon lady so never got a drink of that sort.
Sue. I had a really great time with the Hosepipe Band and all of HB.

Met a few friends and made a few new ones.
Having done them both now, i.e. Sidmouth and Broadstairs.
I must say that of the two, I prefer Broadstairs. Not so far to walk between venues there.

Just got back from Broadstairs, that I went to straight after Sidmouth!

An interesting set of comments from Steve's link - many of which I can agree with.

This was my sixth Sidmouth and the second time that I Stewarded. For me, Sidmouth Folk Week is one of my proper holiday weeks. I loved it, every minute of it and hope that I will continue to do so for as long as I am a Folkie and able to get there.

The Festival is well organised, the people of Sidmouth are so friendly; all of the venues offer a wide range of FOLK content, the pubs are not jammed full to bursting - compare this to Broadstairs (I live in Kent, so I should be proud of it - check out the Broadstairs thread here ).

I am happy with my B&B, I am happy with the Stewarding that I am asked to do. It is great to see friends and meet new ones. I am more than happy to drive 200 miles, spend 28 hours working and pay £300 quid for digs - It's SIDMOUTH FOLK WEEK and I love every minute of it. During 152 Awake hours during Folk Week, there is just SO MUCH to do and see, even after I've Stewarded!

I will CERTAINLY be back next year! I PROBABLY will not be returning to Broadstairs next year (can't believe that I'm the only one on the thread that isn't happy) and am thinking of trying Whitby instead - I'm told that it is similar to Sidmouth.

To the organisers, good luck for 2009.
