Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cumberland Road (Original Irish Boys) From: GUEST,Irene from Somerville Date: 12 Dec 11 - 04:30 PM In the second verse There was always a wind In the back of his soul blowing cold; But there's always the past, When he held the lass That he met down in Cumberland Road should be There was always a wind In the back of his soul blowing cold; But it always would pass, When he held the lass That he met down in Cumberland Road |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cumberland Road From: GUEST,Andy Date: 15 Sep 08 - 08:56 AM Hi Mario, strode is correct, but with Irish songs, there are usually several versions. If strolled better for your sounds, you can also use strolled . Regards Andy |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cumberland Road From: GUEST,Mario Date: 15 Sep 08 - 08:26 AM Fortunately "a more experienced ear", as Boris put it, did appear. Thank you very much, Andy, for your help. Mario P.S.Andy: A doubt: strode or strolled? Don't you think that strolled suits better an arm in arm walk? Mario |
Subject: Lyr Add: CUMBERLAND ROAD From: GUEST,GUEST, Andy Date: 14 Sep 08 - 07:24 AM 1. As I took a drink down in Cumberland Road, I met with a maiden so fair, Full of giggles and sighs, With the sun in her eyes, And a ribbon tied in her black hair. And I wooed her in haste. She was up for the chase. Arm in arm all that summer we strode, Never knowing the pain Of love's loss and love's gain That summer in Cumberland Road. 2. When she took me home to her mom and her dad, We were different as water and beer, But with humor and joy, They accepted this boy, And the love in their hearts it was clear. Though he tried to fit in, There was always a wind In the back of his soul blowing cold; But there's always the past, When he held the lass That he met down in Cumberland Road 3. With the passage of years, There was laughter and tears, But above all severe growing pains; Then the boy broke her heart, And the lovers did part, A train wreck with no one to blame; And as I write this song Some twenty years on, I hope that there's one thing she knows, That this boy's heart did break, And it's all for the sake, Of the lass down in Cumberland Road. This boy's heart did break, And it's all for the sake, Of the lass down in Cumberland Road. |

Subject: Lyr Req: Cumberland Road">Original Irish Boys From: GUEST,Mario Date: 25 Aug 08 - 06:49 PM I returned to "Cumberland Road", Boris, and had a new try. Tell me what you think. As I took a drink down in Cumberland Road I met with a maiden so fair ....giggles(?)...., with the sun in her eyes And a ribbon tied in her black hair. And I wooed her in haste, she was up for the chase Arm in arm all that summer we strolled Never knowing the pain of love's loss and love's pain That summer in Cumberland Road When she took me home to her mummy and dad We were different as water and beer But a ....joy, they accepted this boy And love in their hearts it was clear Though they tried to fare in, there was always a wind In the back ... so blowing cold But there was always the past(?) when he held the lass That he met down in Cumberland Road (continued) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cumberland Road(Original Irish Boys) From: GUEST,Mario Date: 19 Aug 08 - 09:31 AM Quite so, Boris. I could find nothing but this comment by ? :"The word "ought" is tricky here -- is it an assumption or a prescription?... Perhaps the Irish Boys assume that listeners already know these songs, and some indeed will be familiar("Whiskey in a Jar", "Danny Boy"). Others will come as a revelation to even the most dedicated Irish music fans, who will thrill to songs like " Do You Want Your Old Lobby Washed Down?"(answer:no); "New York Girls" (watch out for 'em!); and "Three Drunken Maidens"(worse than the New York girls!). This two-disc set is a rollicking good time".[cduniverse] |
Subject: RE:ADD:: Cumberland Road (Original Irish Boys) From: GUEST,Boris Date: 18 Aug 08 - 11:40 AM Now it's my turn to agree with you, Mario. I wasn't familiar with Irish music and "40 Irish Songs Everyone Ought to Know" was a good, and inexpensive, passport to it. But I can hardly find reviews of the album. It seems a little neglected. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cumberland Road( Original Irish Boys) From: GUEST,Mario Date: 17 Aug 08 - 11:05 AM Hi, Boris. I agree with you, it's a beautiful song. I would add that The Original Irish Boys' album has many fine renderings of Irish standards: Danny Boy, Galway Bay, Carrickfergus, The Spinning Wheel etc. "Cumberland Road" is the only song I couldn't find the (whole) lyrics. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cumberland Road (Original Irish Boys) From: GUEST,Boris Date: 16 Aug 08 - 10:43 PM I heard "Cumberland Road" yesterday, Mario. It's a beautiful song. Unfortunately, I didn't find the lyrics and am unable to fill in the blanks. I hope a mudcatter comes to help us. Regards. |

Putting together what you transcribed and what I could make out or guess, we have: As I took a drink down in Cumberland Road I met with a maiden so fair ...giggles(?)..., with the sun in her eyes And a ribbon tied in her black hair. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cumberland Road From: Jim Dixon Date: 16 Jul 08 - 04:07 AM I found a sound sample and transcribed a bit of it: ... with the sun in her eyes And a ribbon tied in her black hair; And I wooed her in haste. She was up for the chase. Arm in arm all that summer we strolled [or "we'd stroll" or "we strode"?], Never knowing the pain of loves lost and loves gained, [or "love's loss and love's gain"?] That summer in Cumberland Road. |
