Fintan Valleley (flute player, singer, songwriter, music journalist etc. etc.) has just edited and published a new guide under the title "The Companion to Irish Traditional Music". Published by Cork University Press (ISBN 185918-1481)at £25 (Irish).

Anyone with an interest in the music and song MUST have a copy of this monumental (450 pages or so) tome. The contributors are all experts in the field and the coverage is vast. Sure - there are people muttering about who's left out and who's left in - this is Ireland after all! Despite some problems and idiosyncracies, this will be the standard reference until someone else has the patience and dedication to replace it.

Regards

Cork University Press distributes only indirectly - in Ireland through Gill and MacMillan, who supply book shops. I will be getting copies for Ulstersongs. For information about supply in your country, I suggest you contact trish_carroll@ucc.ie

For any online shoppers...

Amazon.com is taking pre-orders for this book (not priced in the States yet)...the 1998 version (also hardcover and special order at Amazon.com) is listed at $39.95

I haven't checked other sources yet.

Mary

Amazon says the 1999 edition has yet to be published and will cost $50 in hardcover. It also says the 1998 edition (without the "the" in the title) is back-ordered and costs a little less.

Barnes & Noble has this to offer:

Blooming Meadows: The World of Irish Traditional Musicians
In-Stock: Ships within 24 hours.
Fintan Vallely,Charlie Piggott, Nutan (Photographer) / Hardcover / Date Published: November 1998
Retail Price: $26.95 Our Price: $18.86, You Save $8.09 (30%)

Then B&N proceeds to list, in their remarkable wisdom, about seven completely unrelated titles turned up by their search engine. Ah, well...

Bookfinder turns up nothing other than the two titles at Amazon. So what else is new?

Sandy (frustrated)

Anyone have a bookmark for the thread "Essential Songs for Irish Sessions" of about a year ago? I've just started attending Irish jams at The Starry Plough in Berkeley (strictly as a listener to this point). --seed

The Companion to Irish Traditional Music was co-published in USA by New York University Press - so it should be more readily available than appears from the information above.
