I'd love to hear your experience of buying or selling from CD Baby. Here's mine, and as you'll see, I can't recommend them highly enough.

I recently used CD Baby for the first time, when I bought Noah Zacharin's CD 'Waiting On Your Love'. I found the link to it via Noah's myspace and within minutes I'd bought one of his CDs.

Noah Zacharin's Myspace

It was SO easy.

It also arrived in days, all the way from the US. On top of all that I also received the best notification email, ever! In fact, it was so good, making me smile so much, that I've copied it below.

Your CD has been gently taken from our CD Baby shelves with
sterilized contamination-free gloves and placed onto a satin pillow.

A team of 50 employees inspected your CD and polished it to make sure

Our packing specialist from Japan lit a candle and a hush fell over
the crowd as he put your CD into the finest gold-lined box that money

We all had a wonderful celebration afterwards and the whole party

I hope you had a wonderful time shopping at CD Baby. We sure did.

Wait until you get the next one hoping that the stork has delivered it successfully...

I've used CD Baby and would certainly use them again. The CD I ordered (couldn't get it here) arrived within three days from the US. I also got the humorous follow-up letter, which I naturally responded to in kind.

Well worth dealing with.

They also got a unanimous thumbs-up in a folk performers' email group I belong to, and the people recommending it were seasoned professionals with a lot of experience under their belts. So CDB do sound like they're good guys -

We have been using CD Baby to sell our album Clearwater for about a year now and the highest praise we can give is we have had absolutely no problems. The service and information we can access is first class. We get notified when we have made a sale and we are supplied with an email address of the purchaser and information on how they found out about our music. We can set the retail price to what we wish both for hard copies and download; we can also see how many people have visited our page to listen to the samples we have set up. They also allow you to set up samples of one to all songs on an album for people to listen to. The samples can be from 30 seconds to two min long.. We have found this a great feature as we refer people to cd baby from our main web site so that they can sample all our music even if they are not going to but the album. If we wish we get paid weekly so no issues with waiting for money owed and you can set the level of money when they pay you, this is great for us here in the UK as we do not want a lot of cheques for 20 dollars as there is a fee to convert them into sterling. We wait until we have 200 dollars of sales and then they send us the cheque.

Basically CD Baby gets our vote as the best outlet for independent musicians like ourselves, mow all we need to do is sell more albums!

I've sold about 40 of my CD's thru CDBaby... It's a great idea for "indie" artists to get their stuff out...

What I found, though, is that if you wnat to sell alot of CD's on it you have to be willing to work it... That means changing your listing headings and keep your listing fresh and updated... I confess to having not done that... My bad...

As a customer of CDBaby, buying CDs I have found them to be excellent - fast, no-nonsense service, and I do appreciate their humor. And you can now buy most albums as MP3s from CDBaby - so receiving the album takes moments.

As a retail outlet for my album sales, I cannot say enough good stuff! These guys are professional, helpful, and I mean personally helpful and they have great distribution. They have made possible significant income for me for my albums and I am truly grateful to them for the way they run their business.

Nick,

It ain't too tough to set up a seller's account with CDBaby... Just go to the sight and click on the appropriate clickies and it will walk you thru everything.... They are going to want you to send them 11 CD's... One they keep... The other 10 are inventory... They will email you when they have sold out... You get a check the week after each sale... Easy... Even I did it???...lol...

I like them. I've been buying from them 4-5 times over the past few years. No hassles, things arrive as scheduled, and I really like the 'artwork only' feature where you can choose to avoid having the boxes shipped as this 1) saves on postage and 2) enhances the chance of the package slipping through customs unnoticed.

In Denmark, the unwanted attention from the customs authorities will add a 25% VAT to purchases from abroad, so this is really appreaciated. None of my shipments so far have been intercepted :o))

As someone who has both sold through and bought from CDBaby, I can only say that it's a first-class, ethical operation. My only complaint, and it's more a complaint about some of the folks that sell on CDBaby rather than about CDBaby itself, is that there's generally no provision for distributing recordings to retailers. If you give CDBaby a wholesale price, they'll distribute, but most people don't.

I fully recognize that selling through CDBaby returns a higher percentage of the selling price to the artist (or whoever's selling the CD to CDBaby); I do feel that artists are missing the opportunity of reaching potential customers that might otherwise be presented by retail outlets.

Usually at work we only hear the complaints, because nobody picks up the phone to call and say that everything is fine.

So an occasional message board like this really helps to raise one's spirits.

Not to sound like a broken record, dirty CD or corrupt MP3 file, as the case may be, but I have to concur with the glowing things said about CDBaby. I can go there any time to check on my page views, money owed, sales reports etc. If I email a query, I always hear back promptly, and on top of that they always pay you when they say they will. Can't say fairer than that. Derek's a class bloke alright.
Cheers then,

Hey Derek,

Let me echo what's already been said and add that you are the man! I've made sales through CD Baby that I don't think that I would ever have been able to make on my own. I still sell far more cds (more than ten times as many) via my own efforts, mostly via my live appearances, but folks, that live in places where I've yet to have the opportunity to perform, have found my music and purchased it via my CD Baby link. Places across the U.S., Europe and the rest of the planet.

For example, just a couple of weeks ago, as I was about to head out the door to perform at the Oregon Country Fair, I checked my email and received a request from someone from the Netherlands for two of my Blues recordings. He found me via another website that I have at EZ Folk and was wondering what the fee would be to ship these recordings to him. My store at EZ Folk is not yet set up completely and there was no way for this customer to determine the shipping costs. I told him that I could research this postal info when I returned from my the Fair but I also referred him to my CD Baby page where I had these same two recordings for sale. While I was away he answered my email saying that he had an account at CD Baby and simply ordered them from that site. Another successful transaction via my CD Baby account thanks to Derek and all the CD Babes.

Ditto from Ditty as far at CD Baby goes. I have emailed Derek (President/Owner/etc of CD Baby) on several occasions with suggestions, thoughts, etc...some about CD Baby, some about the music business in general. Everytime Derek has answered me personally. Of course, the service is steady as a rock, as well. A big reason for me to use CD Baby is to have an answer when people ask, "Where can I buy your CD?"

Dick Greenhaus - I looked on the CD Baby artist site, and could not find a reference to providing a wholesale price...this is a great idea! Do you know how I can pursue? or have you spoken with Derek about being a wholesaler? Thanks.

Still waiting for my CD to be discovered but I am a bit lazy & don't navigate any site that well.
Speaking of which I did screw up when I signed on, thankfully they were pretty quick about hepling me to straighten it all out.

Hey gang the option to offer a discount for distributors and quantity buyer purchases is there. I believe that I have selected that option for at least two of my recordings. By doing this folks who are real fans can have more of my music for less and other outlets can take advantage of the discount to spread my music around to places where I may not have had the pleasure of visiting yet.

Once logged in to your account look for the "YOUR ITEMS" tab and click on it. For any given cd listed there, there will be a link selection called "EDIT ALBUM INFO". Click on that. A long list of preferences appear, each with an "edit" link next to it. Now click on the "edit" link next to the "Distribution and Discounts" preference. Once there you will see where you can alter this preference. CD Baby even suggests an appropriate amount, $8.00.

I've bought from CD baby before and their customer service is great, I like the personal touch of their communication.

I've also recently signed up to sell my music* because they offer really reasonable terms to artists (unlike some other online retailers), and the best percentages on digital downloads that I've come across. Also, there's loads of well-thought out advice to artists on selling their music.

Well, maybe. Depends what they say, doesn't it? Do I want my supposedly neutral retail-outlet to (possibly) compromise my sales because of a negative opinion of just one not-necessarily-qualified person? Not really.

I don't use CD Baby but have been following this thread with interest. How do others feel about this?

I too like CDBaby and use it for my three ShoreGrass Albums, but I've found a couple of problems with the company's service.

I no longer get notifications by email when I've sold an album, although I still get the payment and can see the notification if I log into my account. This may be a problem with my ISP blocking the note, but I don't think so. When I send a note to CDBaby about the issue, their reply reaches me...

The other thing is that the digital distribution is not consistent or accurately depicted by CDBaby. My first album went to 40-something digital distributors, but the 2nd one went to only 22. I've gotten fairly unconvincing answers about why this happened, and nothing has been done about it. They supposedly sent my "Songs of the Civil War Era" album to Liquid Digital Media (WalMart) along with my "Going Home" album, but only the "Going Home" one shows up there. So I can't believe what their records show for where I've been distributed. Or maybe it's WalMart's fault, but either way my Civil War album is not available through Liquid Digital Media, despite CDBaby saying it is there.

Aside from those issues, I did enjoy the humorous emails (when I used to get them...) and think it's a great service for independent musicians and very well run. There's no other way I might have sold a few albums to people in other countries or other parts of the USA.

Also, Derek Sivers announced a few months ago that he was retiring from the day-to-day operations of the company - still owns CDBaby but doesn't work there any more. Apparently he now has time to find the Mudcat!

Hi Barbara,

There was one email that I didn't get when I sold a CD, but only one out of all my sales. As for the digital distribution, Long Grey line has been distributed to 68 companies, 28 of them that are now DEAD or no longer in existence. That might account for the reason that your second album went to fewer companies. I see companies added all the time, but there are also plenty that don't make it.

On your digital distribution page click on the links to see who your tracks were delivered to.

On the whole, I think CDBaby is wonderful. Oh yeah, I already said it above. :-)

As I said above, I don't think it's a problem with my ISP, because when I send CDBaby a note to tell them I didn't get a sales email from them, I DO GET their response to my complaint. And yes, I quoted the numbers of digital distribution companies my tracks were delivered to from the digital distribution page links.

Deb, your note also points out the fact that the distribution is not done consistently and even-handedly. My Civil War album was distributed to 43 companies, several of which are dead. Shouldn't all distribution be done for all albums the same way in basically the same genre? How come yours went to 68 and mine went to 43? And my other album went to 22? (The 3rd album I did not get a barcode for and did not set up for digital).

Hmmmm, the more I think about it, the more concerned I am!

Hi Barbara,

Sometimes I have a difficult time explaining things and I might also be telling you something you already understand, so please bear with me   :-)

I do think it depends on when your CD was signed up for the digital distribution. I have two CDs in DD: Long Grey Line was signed up in 2003 and so far has been delivered to 68 compnaies, 28 which are dead. Dad's Dinner Pail was signed up in mid 2005 and has been delivered to 50 companies, 11 which are dead. I also recall that it took iTunes something like five or six months before it actually showed up in the store.

I have had great success with digital distribution through CDBaby, and for all the imperfections I wouldn't go about it any other way. It is nice to have someone else dealing with all of this.

Amergin-great post! Gave me a good laugh!!

Hi Deb,

I appreciate you taking the time to explain. However, I signed "Songs of the Civil War Era" up in 2005, and to date it has been distributed to 43 companies, several of which are dead. There should have been time by now to send it to at least the same 50 that your 2005 album were sent to, no? My 2007 album "Going Home" has been sent to 22 companies, a few of which are dead. No activity has happened on my distribution in quite awhile, which tells me that the distribution process is arbitrary and not handled consistently.

I agree that for all the imperfections it's a way for me to have someone dealing with digital distribution, and the major companies like iTunes have been handled. But I would like them to keep the agreements they promised when I signed up.
