Maybe the colorization was purely an accident and was not done on purples.

Was he trying to look more ma-gentrified?

The real reason of course is that purple is the color of the ointment that they use for treating crabs. Although how he got crabs on his face I won't attempt to explain.

(Sorry Peace ol' buddy but it reminded me of a friend of mine who was working in our yard in Alabama one day and got himself a good infestation of chiggers; the doc gave him some of that purple ointment. Everything was fine 'till his girlfriend found the ointment in his medecine cabinet and started asking all sorts of awkward questions)

Does Bruce have a song that includes the word purple? "Purple Rain" and "Purple People Eater" are already written. So is "purple mountain majesty"-at least those words are in that America The Beautiful" song.

If he doesn't already have a purple song, I think Bruce should write one. His Purple Song could be about "Purple Snow" {don't eat it}. Or "Purple Craps" {the more they itch the harder you scratch]. He could write a song about "Purple, Places, and Things". Hey, the possibilities are endless.

At the very least, at his next gig Bruce should wear purple shirts and purple socks {along with other clothes that are purple or otherwise}.

And those people who come to his performances could also wear or carry something purple. In that way they would be celebrating Bruce's purpleness-and their own purpleness too.

Well, I don't see purple people acting in such a way. Purple is much more dignified a color than blue is. After all, purple is the color of kings, and noblity and Kermit the frog..um, excuse me. Kermit's color is green.

After all, purple is the color of kings, and nobility, and Bruce Murdoch's face in his website photograph. Putple artist wouldn't do anything as crass as throwing paint on people in the audience or ridiculing people who come to a program late. But I hear tell there is one artist who likes purple who for a period of time was known by a symbol instead of a name.

Something tells me that Bruce won't go that route either. But if he did, I wonder what symbol he would choose to represent himself?

I just received a pm from Adrien {Beer} who asked me to convey this message from him and to convey a message from Bruce as well.

Adrien asked that I let people know that he is still coming down from the festival and still has lots to do. He thanks you all for your well wishes & your support.

Adrien has also spent some time after the festival with Bruce. Bruce doesn't have access to a computer now, but he's told Adrien that he will be writing on Mudcat shortly. Bruce also wants people to know that he very much appreciates the well wishes, and the compliments, that Mudcatters and other people on his website have expressed about his festival performance and about his Matters Of The Heart CD.

Also, Bruce wants people to know that he's aware of this "Bruce has a Purple Face thread" although he hasn't read it yet. He thinks the idea of this thread is a hoot {or some words like that}.

I look forward to Adrien's and Bruce's return to active posting on Mudcat threads.

    BTW Azizi, you mentioned the other day in the thread announcing the new CD that the google ads at the bottom of the page both had the word Peace in them, thinking that it was a coincidence. Have you noticed that at the bottom of this one the 2 ads are for Red purple shoes and Purple Rain Radio. I'm thinking google does this by design, linking ads to key words or phrases.

Of course, we'd give him our undye-ing attention even if he were no longer purple and still come see what all the cry was about, even if there was no hue beyond a mere sigh of relief.

It just occurred to me that I don't know beans about Moorish dances.
I don't think they have partners, and ladies don't dance with men, at least not traditionally, do they?

But even if this song is called Murdoch Moor, it doesn't have to be about Moorish dancers...I mean the ones from Great Britain and not the ones from Morocco...

But can't you see some people with half purple faces, or people wearing purple tee shirts, or purple shorts, or purple hats attending Bruce's gigs in honor of his Purple Face Photo?

I mean Michael Jackson had the glove. And Prince had the ...okay he had the color purple first...But we can claim it too, cause I don't think Prince ever was photographed with a purple tint to his face.

I hasten to say that-unlike Amos and Bruce-I don't know beans about writing any songs. My apologies for jumping in feet first. But sometimes you gotta move when the spirit says move, and so I posted what came to me.

I hope that Amos will consider these lyrics and fix the structure etc when he writes this song down.

Hey you guys and gals- I just started a new thread on the forum at Bruce's website. The thread is called "Bruce's Purple Face Photo".

Here's my first message to that thread:

People at the online discussion forum, Mudcat Cafe, have been having a lot of fun coming up with reasons why Bruce's face is purple in that photo that used to be on every page of this website. Here's the message posted on another thread of this forum that was the impetus for that thread starting:

"best of luck with album and the site! you are the first folksinger with a purple face. I feel sure you will not let the unique nature of being purple stop your songs from being relevant for the rest of us" -Big Al Whittle {weelittledrummer}

If you'd like to add a reason why Bruce's face was purple, you can do so here and/or on that Mudcat thread whose link is provided on the forum page. I hear tell Bruce wanted his "real" picture on this website's home page so that's the reason for the change.

But I'm wondering what you think of the new Bruce-I mean the old Bruce-I mean the real photo of Bruce...if we can believe that photo is really him.

Back where I come from, a Purple Jesus is grape juice and pure grain alcohol. You mix it up in a bathtub (for a party), dip it out with a roasting pan, and everyone drinks from the pan as you pass it around. Back to the bathtub when the pan is empty.

No, folks, at the time of the photo, he was playing on a non-hockey night in some redneck joint and being made to sing a medley under obvious duress of "Wild Rover" (which he turned into "Rompin' Rover's Daze"), "Barrett's Privateers" ("Grin and Barrett, buddy! This is for public ears only!"), "Melon-Collie Baby" ( about the aforementioned "wild rover" who turned out to be a feral Border pup that preferred sucking cantelope to eggs), "Rocky Top" (Which he turned into Iraqui Top, an ode to living on a sand dune) and, of course, "Stairway to Heaven" ("SING IT, or prepare ascend it, boy!", or was that "ass-end it"? He didn't want to know!). All this against his will and better judgement, of course, but paying gigs are where you find them, so that was the revolting part referred to in the album title....

I hope that we aren't assuming that there is anything wrong with purple colored skin.

Purple skinned people should be PROUD of their skin color.

They need to "Say it loud! I'm purple and I'm proud!".

James Brown made a hit record with those words like that. His record was highly influential in helping Black people develop and reinforce acceptance & pride in their skin color.

Maybe Bruce Murdoch should do the same for people besides himself who have purple tinted skin {even if, like him, they don't have that skin color all the time}.

I have the same right of expression as any other person in this community and I will continue to express myself when and how I choose, particularly if my spirit tells me to do so.

Furthermore, given the tragedies and losses that several Mudcatters have recently experienced and that we have experienced with them, second hand reading about them and through commiserating with them and lending our support to them to the best of our ability to do so, I feel as though we {Mudcat members and regular guests} needed and still need a bit of fun & games and witty word play. This thread helps in that regard while it helps promote Bruce's CD-a CD that I believe-having heard some of the songs-is very worthy of that promotion.

All this reminds me of GREAT MOMENTS IN CINEMA HISTORY

Tony Curtis in THE PURPLE MASK. The filmakers were obviously too cheap to buy the rights of the Scarlet Pimpernel - so they made THE PURPLE MASK.   Tony played the eponymous hero.

One part of the film - Tony jumps onto a moving stagecaoch to rescue somebody. The driver clocks him and shouts out in a broad Brooklyn accent, IT'S DA POIPLE MASK!!!!

The film went downhill from there, but try and see it for that.

LOL fyi.....it was Purple Haze I was referring to on the thread about "Matters of the Heart" when I misquoted the line from "Last Man Standing"........"Write to me when THE LIGHT is not so demanding" instead of "....LIFE'S not so demanding" and I said I feel like one of those people who thought Hendrix said, "Scuse me while I kiss this guy", reputedly one of the most misquoted lines in rock music. Just in case there are no people from Louisiana following this thread, there is a delightful little micro brewery in Abita Springs, Louisiana (right across Lake Ponchartrain from New Orleans) called the Abita Brewing Company (www.abita.com) and they just happen to have a tasty little product called, "PURPLE HAZE". They have a great little restaurant/pub at the brewery....do you think Bruce was auditioning for a gig?

And while we are on the topic of Louisiana, the colors of Louisiana State University (I know, I know, that's the place Randy Newman said, "...went in dumb, came out dumb too") are PURPLE and Gold. So, Bruce is clearly trying to promote the new cd in the land of Huey Long......."a chicken in every pot and every man a king"!!!

Can he turn plaid, or maybe paisley, or just a cam-million different individual shades?

Hell, he could make big bucks doing TV commercials for, say, Sherwin-Williams as "The Human Paint Chip", riding Old Paint to worldwide earth-covering glory! I, for one, would spring for the "Live at Home Depot" 2-CD + DVD boxed set!

Or could an expose book on race relations called "Purple Like Me" be in the offing, followed by countless endless-hued sequels if it proves successful?

And some foggy Christmas Eve (and there'll be a lot of them with all the Global Warmin' caused by all the Global War Men), he could replace Rudolph, or, even if only as a mere tail light/turn signal, still become immortalized in a Holiday song he could write himself and retire on the royalties and resulting animated spinoffs.

Of course, few people realize that back in the lean late-1960s New York City years, the only way he could get by finacially was to hire himself out as a black light at pot parties. You had to pay extra for him to strobe or do a lava lamp, as that stuff tended to hurt a bit after a while.

You're right, Ron......those parishes around Lafayette and cajun country are something to be experienced. I lived in Baton Rouge for eight years. I still miss the people, the food, and the music. However, when the state you're living in is 49th on virtually every social indicator of well-being (rate of poverty, amount of adult illiteracy, rate of infant mortality, etc., etc.), it wears on you! Repeating to yourself, "Thank God for Mississippi or we would be dead last" got tiresome. LOL

Back to the subject of promoting "Matters of the Heart", I know the artist himself needs to weigh in on this but in a previous posting (could have been on the thread dedicated to the cd), I suggested that Jim Frum at Folk Alley (the internet station at Kent State University dedicated to acoustic and world music) should be sent a copy and someone needs to post a review with Dirty Linen, the folk and world music magazine out of Baltimore, MD. Finally, I think we need to encourage some exp[osure of both the cd and Bruce himself at the International Folk Alliance Conference, 2009 in Memphis, TN., February 18 -22, 2009. Hey....maybe we could arrange a private tour of Graceland just for Mudcatters! Anyway, is someone coordinating these promotion efforts?

yep, some fine music down there... et-toi, hey la bas... looking fwd to going back again....

I've been to a couple of Folk Alliance Conferences... played at one in Cleveland a few years back before they relocated to Memphis... met and heard some really good people...plus the resource opportunities are huge...

as far as 'coordinating the promotion efforts'... B.M. is the best person to speak with.. I know that he has some solid ideas... things will start to shape up soon, I suspect.... main thing is... he has a fine CD to work with now... and another one developing for next year... so it's been a very productive period so far... I don't expect that to change... I'm happy to see it starting to roll along... and the interest that it's generating.... I'm not really surprised... this is the vision I had when I managed to kidnap him and lock him in a recording studio on a snowy Montreal week-end 7 months ago....even if his face turned purple... it's been an interesting and rewarding ride so far...glad I got onboard and shovelled some coal into the fire-box... I knew that the old boiler could still get up a lot of steam....

He's been well wrote of by his rooters, but had we thought we'd arid in some conifer way as to not supply enough moisture whenever the needle occur enough to cause him to pine away and balsam and turn from an evergreen to an everpurple fir lack of H2O, we'd have chosen an alternate root and provided him the next draft of the stuff rather than the next draught that caused him to Ale and and made Canada Dry.

So water the boys in the back room having?

The last thing Bruce would want to be is a fire hazard.

A year or so ago I had my picture taken with Hillary Clinton in her office in DC and I sent it to all my Republican friends with the caption, "I had my picture taken with the next President of the United States and you didn't".

That's not going to happen but I do have a picture of me with an Oscar winner and a future Grammy/Juno winner.......God works in wondrous ways.........

The Ashcan Alley comics are great. I was the proud recipient of three from John himself--and of a DVD which I cannot wait to view. John Weldon is a phenomenal thinker and wonderful guy. Meeting him was a thrill. He's got class and IMO he's a great lateral thinker. I still owe him a scotch. (He seemed disgusted that I'd consider putting milk in it.)

Severn: if you get a chance to see this, PLEASE re-send me your address via PM. You have a very rare courage that is not afforded too many people, and I want to get this CD to you asap. Ever since your illness--the one that didn't extend to your mind--I have been in awe of you: your humour, your wit. It continues to show itself in your posts. And your puns.

The man who took that photo is Andrew Gryn. He is a truly gifted and inspired photographer. The shot was taken in his 'den', a room where he stores thousands of vinyl records--rarities that make me pray turntables come back once again. He can use a camera to capture mood/feeling. He's also one heckuva cook. He was kind enough to take that shot and allow me to use it for a poster prior to playing a gig in Montreal last winter. He wanted something to make folks look twice at the poster. I do not understand how the minds of photographers work, but if I could be half the writer that he is a photographer, then I will have accomplished something with the work I've done in the past few years.

I am very touched by the kindness of people here and I thank you for it. Sometimes I think we all do things just to have fun. This thread is an example of that. And if my purple face helped spark that then I am happy.

And, since it seems that he plays off of other people's comments, I guess that some of us piddling play on worders would have to give Severn permission to use some of our posts. But I can't imagine why anyone would refuse that permission.

I don't write professionally and Severn's my real first name.

A lot of what I write is in the context of reacting to others, and I wouldn't begin to know how to properly frame it. Thanks for the praise, but this is Bruce's thread, and I'm just having some fun on it, not trying to hijack it or grab someone else's glory.

I suppose if you click the name Severn atop one of my posts, you can view several thousand of them and with a few more clicks, put them in each one's individual context. However, Mudcat Taverns and foodfights and unsung cartoon heroes and such involve me interacting with some world class accomplices who are putting out stuff just as good inspred by what everybody else is doing and it all builds as a community thing. It would be hard to isolate from other contributors and to explain a lot of interCat in-jokes, and launch myself on an ego trip I don't seek to pick out and edit a "best of Severn", the precedent of Van Morrison once having produced his own Tribute Album notwithstanding.

Sorry folks, but I don't feel I'm publisher ready yet, by any stretch....


But there IS this Magenta gent out there who actually copyrights things and, thinking that purple is the color of royalties, tries to make money from his hidden talents (and rather obvious hue). And ironically enough, the more you people try to cover his works, the more you'll end up exposing them to the public.

After all, the definition of a singer-songwriter is:

One who risks being called a Communist for excercising the freedom of speech guaranteed by a Democracy to defy the Dictatorship* of popular tastes with the end goal of achieving and perpetuating Royalties.

I just received my copies of John Weldon's "Ashcan Alley" comic books.

John, your sense of humor {excuse me, "humour"} is totally wacked. And I love it!

To paraphrase a character in John's first edition, these comics "are a work of depth and brillance". I chuckled reading every page.

There is even one character in these comics who "does portraits, landscapes, apes, grapes, and fire escapes",{at least she did until she found her calling painting crying musical instruments}.

If you haven't contacted John to get your very own copies of "Ashcan Alley", do it.
