Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I need the Lyrics to Penny Annie From: Genie Date: 22 Jul 08 - 01:51 PM I can't find it online, but I have it on tape somewhere. I know it starts out: "Everybody called her Penny Annie. She danced for a penny or for free. ... " and the last verse contains the line: "She was showin' off her womanhood, Doin' the bump and grind, And I can't say that I enjoyed the view." Maybe those snippets will jog other people's memories and we can reconstruct the whole lyric? |

Subject: Lyr Add: PENNY ANNIE (Larry Gatlin) From: GUEST,Gene Date: 22 Jul 08 - 06:44 PM Intrigued by the title, I couldn't resist finding it, listening to it, and copying down the lyrics. May not be 100% correct, but pretty close... PENNY ANNIE Recorded By: Larry Gatlin Rag-tag little girl with big blue eyes and yellow hair, Barely standin' two feet above the ground, Dancin' for handouts at the Crockett County fair, She cast a spell on ev'ryone around. Ev'rybody calls her Penny Annie. She danced for a penny or for free. If Annie had been any older then, I bet a penny I’d have taken Annie home with me. Years went by and she became a lady at the fair, Dancin' for a penny or for free. Then one year she disappeared. no one knew just why, But now the Crockett County fair ain't what it used to be. Then one night I saw her name on a flashing neon sign, Sayin' “Penny Annie dances just for you.” She was showin' off her womanhood doin' the bump and grind. I can't say that I enjoyed the view. She still dances on for a penny. She dances not for pleasure but from pain. She's not the same Penny Annie any more. She's dancin' to try to feed the hunger in her veins. Now she works lyin' on her back, dancin' to a different tune, Doin' one-hour stands with any man she finds. She shoots away the pain, but then it comes again too soon. She's payin' the fiddler who's been fiddlin' with her mind, her body and mind. Didn't anybody ever tell you, Annie? If you dance with any man who plays a tune, The dance is fun, but when the dance is done, Sometimes you'll find you danced with ev'ry devil in the room. Ev'rybody calls her Penny Annie. She danced for a penny or for free. If Annie had been any older then, I bet a penny I’d have taken Annie home with me. Tag: Dear God, I’m wishing I had taken Annie home with m-e-e-e-e. Anyone wanting to take a shot at the lyrics, see email addy above.

Subject: ADDPOP: Penny Annie From: Joe Offer Date: 22 Jul 08 - 08:11 PM I verified that the song was written by Larry Gatlin, and not just recorded by him. I hear a few things different. Here's my transcription: Penny Annie (Larry Gatlin) Rag-tag little girl with big blue eyes and yellow hair Barely standin' two feet above the ground Dancin' for a handout at the Crockett Country Fair She cast a spell on ev'ryone around Ev'rybody called her Penny Annie She'd dance for a penny or for free If Annie had been any older then I bet a penny I'd have taken Annie home with me Years went by and she became a legend at the fair Dancin' for a penny or for free Then one year she didn't appear, no one knew just why But now the Crockett County Fair ain't what it used to be Then one night I saw her name on a flashing neon sign Sayin' Penny Annie dancin' just for you She was showin' off her womanhood, doin' the Bump and Grind I can't say that I enjoyed the view She's still dancin' on for a penny She dances not for pleasure but from pain She's not the same Penny Annie any more She's dancin' to try to feed the hunger in her veins Now she works lyin' on her back, dancin' to a different tune Doin' one hour stands with any man she finds She shoots away the pain, but then it comes again too soon She's payin' the fiddler who's been fiddlin' with her mind, her body and mind Didn't anybody ever tell you, Annie If you dance to pay the man who plays the tune The dance is fun, but when the dancin's done Sometimes you'll find you've danced with ev'ry devil in the room Ev'rybody called her Penny Annie She'd dance for a penny or for free If Annie had been any older then I bet a penny I'd have taken Annie home with me TAG: Dear God, I'm wishing I had taken Annie home with m-e-e-e-e |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Penny Annie (Larry Gatlin) From: Genie Date: 23 Jul 08 - 02:34 AM I knew Larry had written it, though I didn't recall all the lyrics. I believe I heard him talk about writing it based on real life experience (though I'm not sure the song is "biographical" as such). Joe, I think most of the few changes you made to the lyric transcription Gene posted are right. Verse 1, 8: " ... callED her Penny Annie ... " Verse 2: " ... became a LEGEND at the fair ... " " ... one year she DIDN'T APPEAR ... Verse 7: "... man who plays THE tune ... " "... when the DANCIN'S done ... " But I think Gene's right on Verse 4: "... sayin' "Penny Annie DANCES just for you ... " And I hear Larry sing the last line of that verse as: "AND I can't say that I enjoyed the view." |
Subject: Chords Add: PENNY ANNIE (Larry Gatlin) From: Gene Date: 23 Jul 08 - 02:47 PM Note 1. They've tuned the 6th String (big E) from E down to D. Note 2. They play it in D fingering and put a capo in the first fret, so they're in the key of Eb. Note 3. Bm/A - is a B minor chord with an A bass note. Note 4. My music buddy Zoomer chorded the song. I arranged the verses the way I like to see them and included some of the comments above. ================================================= Penny Annie Writer Larry Gatlin Recorded By: Larry Gatlin & The Gatlin Brothers Band Intro: [D] [D/C] [G/B] [Gm/Bb] [Asus4] [A] [D] Rag-tag Little [G] Girl With Big Blue [A] Eyes And Yellow [D] Hair Barely Standin' [G] Two Feet Above The [C] Ground [A] [D] Dancin' For [G] Handouts At The [A] Crockett Country [D] Fair [Em] She Cast A Spell On Ev'ry One A-[A]-round [G] Ev'rybody [A] Called Her Penny [D] Annie She [G] Danced For A [A] Penny Or For [D] Free If [G] Annie Had [F#] Been Any [Bm] [Bm/A] Older [G] Then I [Em] Bet A Penny I'd Have Taken [A7] Annie Home With [D] Me [D] Years Went By And [G] She Became A [A] Legend At The [D] Fair Dancin' For A [G] Penny Or For [C] Free [A] [D] Then One Year She [G] Disappeared [A] No One Knew Just [Bm] Why [Bm/A] [Em] But Now The Crockett County Fair Ain't What It Used To [A] Be [G] [Asus4] [A] [G] Then One Night I [A] Saw Her Name On A [D] Flashing Neon Sign Sayin' [G] Penny Annie [A] Dances Just For [Bm] You [Bm/A] She Was [G] Showin' Off Her [F#] Womanhood [Bm] Doin' The [Bm/A] Bump And [G] Grind [Em] I Can't Say That I Enjoyed The [A] View [G] [Asus4] [A] She Still [G] Dances [A] On For A [D] Penny She [G] Dances Not For [A] Pleasure But From [Bm] Pain [Bm/A] [G] She's Not The [F#] Same Penny [Bm] Annie [Bm/A] Any [G] More [Em] She's Dancin' To Try To Feed The Hunger In Her [A] Veins [G] [A] Now [D] She Works Lyin' [G] On Her Back, [A] Dancin' To A Different [D] Tune Doin' One Hour Stands With [G] Any Man She [C] Finds [A] [D] She Shoots Away The [G] Pain, But Then It [A] Comes Again Too [Bm] Soon [Bm/A] [Em] She's Payin' The Fiddler Who's Been Fiddlin' With Her [A] Mind, Her [G] Body And [A] Mind Didn't [G] Anybody [A] Ever Tell You [D] Annie If You [G] Dance With Any [A] Man Who Plays A [Bm] Tune The [G] Dance Is [F#] Fun But [Bm] When The Dance Is [G] Done [Em] Sometimes You'll Find You Danced With Ev'ry Devil In The [A] Room [G] [Asus4] [A] [G] Ev'rybody [A] Calls Her Penny [D] Annie She [G] Danced For A [A] Penny Or For [Bm] Free [Bm/A] [G] If Annie Had [F#] Been Any [Bm] [Bm/A] Older Then [G] [Em] I Bet A Penny I'd Have Taken [A] Annie Home With [D] Me TAG: Dear [Em] God, I'm Wishing [C] I Had Taken [A] Annie Home With [D] M-e-e-e-e-e [Bm] [G] [Gdim/E] [D] G |
