I am relatively new to "mudcats" and I was wondering where some of you people are from. I see "Roger in Baltimore" and "billo" is from England, but that's about it. You can see from my name I am from Southeastern Colorado. If its proper, let me know from where you hail.

Banjoman: I grew up on the Western Slope, but went to visit relatives on the Eastern Slope; my ancestors were pioneers in both places. I used to have so much fun when I went to visit my aunt who lived in Fowler. I'd get to ride the bus from Grand Junction, all by myself, and stay with her for a couple of weeks. I haven't been over that way since I was a teen. Are you anywhere near there? Of course, we Western Slopers never admitted enjoying any part of the Eastern slope; generally wanted to secede and be our own state!

I've been a few other places since, but am in Wyoming now.

Where in South Eastern Colorado? The only place I know of down there is La Junta, which is a great little town. Are you anywhere near there?

I lived in Colorado Springs for a few years but I've heard it's grown a lot recently.

It may be very obvious to residents of USA, but CO and WI aren't to me. As for myself I live in QLD and get paid in AUD. In my earlier life I lived in VIC and worked for CBM and PMG.

JohninB: Sorry....CO is Colorado; WI is Wisconsin. So, you lived in Queensland, get paid in Australian Dollars, used to live in Victoria, and I won't even guess on the places of employment. Correct, so far? I love to figure such things out because I like to learn more of other cultures.

Bert, nice to know of someone else who knows where La Junta is. My aunt and cousin live in Colorado Springs and yes, it has grown so much it is practically solid from Denver on down to Pueblo. any chance of you ever moving back to Colorado?

John, some of us here in the U.S. are ALSO confused about U.S. States. Some 20 or 30 years ago, the Postal Service forced thes two-letter state abbreviations on us, and many of them don't make sense. Where I am now used to be Calif, or at least Cal; but now it's CA (California). Where I used to live was Wis or Wisc, but now it's WI (Wisconsin). The M's get really confusing: MA (Massachusetts), ME (Maine), MN (Minnesota), MS (Mississippi), MI (Michigan), MO (Missouri), MD (Maryland), and MT (Montana). These abbreviations don't always make natural sense, so they're naturally confusing.
I guess we shouldn't complain. The postal codes I see in other parts of the world don't make a whole lot of sense to the casual observer. Here in the U.S., the Postal Service wanted to foce a 9-digit numerical ZIP code on us, and the people revolted and actually won that battle. We kept our 5-digit Zip codes, which aren't quite so impossible. And the people actually WON, at least this one time. We're certainly losing the battle with the Phone Company on telephone numbers....

Hi there, I live in Toronto, Canada. City of lots of great ethnic stuff and horrid humid summers. As we are in the midst of that right now, I long for the days when I lived on the east coast - maybe not alot of sunshine, but at least you could jump in the ocean to cool off! Wouldn't try that in our Lake Ontario, so cool showers have got to do! YIKES! Cat a Tonic

We have long term (5 years or less) plans to move back to the mountains. It will probably be Montana or Wyoming though. The population of Colorado Springs is around 3 million now. I think it was about 3 hundred thousand when I was there in the early Eighties.

My wife has been in Colorado Springs for about four months looking after her Mother who is sick and she is finding that she herself healthier there. Whether it's due to the water or climate or both I don't know.

Yea, 'ert, I feel healthier here, even though the high altitude doesn't have enough oxygen for me. Glad to hear you might come back. I think it also, for me at least, has to do with the wide open skies, weather patterns, air, and general feel of the mountains and prairie. Deepak Chapra talks about each persons' dosha(can't remember if that is the correct spelling), anyway it is the type of climate and surroundings each person is better off in, than others.

I love nothing better than to smell the sage and dry old dirt of the Rockies, right after an afternoon shower has sizzled when it hits, because of the heat, then chilled into a fine mist, all the while with the sun shining through strongly and brilliantly lighting up the dust motes.

Cat A Tonic, yes one can dip in on the East coast and cool off, but talk about HUMID!!! Toronto probably has nothing on New England for humidity in the summertime! We are thinking of where to move to and Toronto was one thought. When I asked Rick, dearie, about humidity, he told me the neck on his mando dried out so there must not be much! Now you say it is hot and humid there! AAarrrggghhh! Maybe I'll have to stick to my mtns. after all.

If you think Toronto is hot and muggy, come on down to Windsor some time. It gets almost as bad here as Oklahoma City after a thunderstorm. In both I've seen humidity at 100% and the temperature DROP to the high 90s after a storm.

Think I'll go back to my mountains too -- the North Carolina hills, that is......

What ddw says about the humidity sounds just like Detroit across the river; August - temp 99, humidity 99% both before and after the afternoon thundershower. Don't miss it at all.
