I have heard a rumour just now that Pickering has just been pulled due to risk of flooding.

Good job I decided on Saltburn FF instead!
Sadly they have fallen foul to that most used of British phrases, "Rain stopped play".

Terrible news, but I'm sure that the organisers have made the right decision. Very sorry to hear of this, perhaps a Fundraiser event will be on the cards (as several had to do last year due to weather and flooding) as I'm sure there will be lots of funding issues with this late cancellation!

I was camping there last weekend for the steam rally and in the field where the arena was , they had a machine pumping the water off the field from Thursday nights storm. After that it dried up very quickly... but i suppose if rain is forcast all weekend it would be pointless. I commend the organisers from the steam rally for how quickly the problem was dealt with.

It is a great shame that this event has to be cancelled. I have been at Pickering Traction Rally a few years ago when the flooding was indeed serious, we coped and I Know Simon Boak the organiser will not have taken the decision to cancel lightly.
I was to work on Health and Safety at both the Traction Rally and the Festival, but at late notice had to go to Beirut to work , sounds as if this was a much safer option.
Lets hope Simon has the courage to try again next year.

I was (as but a child) at the very first Pickering Steam Rally and I have to say Mr Boak has achieved a remarkable amount since then.

I just love success stories!

I made comment that perhaps the rain was a blessing.

This appeared and then disappeared.

Big brother or what?

Cynic

PS The information on ticket refunds is slipping backwards in time. Perhaps I should not comment on this?

Dear Cynic,

As Joe rightly says, perhaps you should register and tell us all you know. I'm intrigued as to your cynicism. As far as I am aware, The Events Office have posted information to ticket holders stating their intentions. Also, why was the rain a blessing? It looked like a fine event to me. I drove past the site last Wednesday and everything seemed to be progressing nicely. Marquees were up and fencing was all in place. It's just a pity about the damned weather! Again, I await your views.

Good news Pickering Folk Festival is to be rescheduled for next year 23, 24, and 25 May 2009.
Lets hope this does not clash with anything
See www.theeventsoffice.co.uk for details of refunds etc
The acts etc are yet to be booked, but lets hope for a similar one to that planned for this year
I still believe this years event was cancelled due to genuine weather problems.

Both sets of organisers seem pretty chilled about the situation, so I guess there is no need for any of us to get to excited about it either.

Not if the Monday is a Bank Holiday, which the last Monday in May usually is.

Hi Dave go to www.theeventsoffice.co.uk click on Events in left hand column and near top of resulting page you will see details of Pickering Folk Festival. It is,according to the Events Office, Spring Bank Holiday so not as strange as it first appears.
I wish I could give you a link, but my ability stops before this point.

I do not know of anyone who has received a refund. This in spite of the claim on the website that refunds would begin on August 27th in alphabetical order. Friends whose surname begins with B are still waiting.....
Having eventually managed to make contact by phone, all replies to any queries made are evasive.Emails are ignored.

We don't want tickets for May as we are already away and £175 is alot of money! If anyone gets anywhere let us know........ I'm not holding my breath though! Not a good advert for Pickering!

I've just spoken to the Events Office and it seems that the refunds are being cleared slowly. I was told that the organisers are having to sell the showground itself to raise money, which should be completed in around 10 days, after which all refunds will be processed at once.

Sorry, didn't ask that, Ruth. I am assuming that their scheduled events, including the Folk Festival, will still go ahead. Presumably they will have to pay the new owners rent or maybe organise it on a joint basis.

If you want to ring them to confirm, the number is 01759 301547.

Unfortunately, we won't be going as it's Ryedale Folk Weekend at the same time.

Yes, owning so much land doesn't exactly suggest that refunding our hard earned cash would leave the owners on their uppers does it? Not to mention all the other business interests....

Refinancing businesses in the middle of a world-wide credit crisis is one of the more trickier aspects of entrepreneurship at the moment. Without seeing the balance sheet of this business it is impossible to draw any firm conclusions from their "ownership" of land.

Hi, I am so glad that I have found this. I have been sooo frustrated with respect to getting a refund for the festival. After many emails, left messages and writing letters we contacted the Trading Standards and also Consumer Direct. I have just sent a letter to the Events Office via registered post to see if i get a response to that.
I am amazed that someone has actually been able to get through to the office and speak to someone. Lets hope that the refinds start to be paid soon.

In peace.

I note that the initial link posted by the events office on this thread to buy was for an agency. It occurs to me that the refunds ought to be from them if that is where you sent your money - but I am not sure, just that the legal position may be worth checking.

I was wondering if they had any form of insurance, such as weather insurance. I don't know if this is the sort of thing the festival organisers take out. Maybe, the way the weather is going these days, it would be a sensible precaution although I know from doing film shoots that it can be very expensive.

Hi,
I am waiting too and glad I found this forum - I thought I was being left till last as I was being too patient! I got through a couple of weeks ago and was told that their insurance did not cover flooding and so they had sold one of their properties and were just waiting for final bits to go through and they would start issuing refunds at start of October - still waiting so I'll be chasing them up again this week. However, it looks increasingly like stalling tactics as in September I was told my cheque was waiting on desk to be issued the following week - and another story when I phoned prior to this. I am suspecting I will have to chalk this one up to experience - and will think twice before booking in advance for anything else especially with the run of wet weather these past years. Fingers crossed a cheque arrives this week!

Sarah

Hi everyone. I am so glad that there is a forum here to discuss what is happening with our refunds. I have contacted the local Pickering newspaper who will be in touch to find out more. It will be interesting to see what happens from that but also if we do get our money back as promised to you Sarah.
I am still amazed that you have been able to actually talk to someone.
Fingers crossed for all of us.

I have no particular axe to grind with this, but the level of the originally announced line-up seemed to me at the time to be extraordinarily high for the first year of a festival. I wonder how much of that ticket money had to be paid out in cancellation fees to the artists...

Sarah,You seem to have been given a similar range of responses to the ones given to myself and a friend who is also having the difficulties detailed on this thread.Undoubtedly the various excuses were not very subtle stalling tactics.

BB,
I agree wholeheartedly with your comments, but being a trusting soul, sent for the tickets and eagerly anticipated what promised to be a great weekend. Payment to the artists so that they will appear at next year's planned event is just one of the reasons/excuses which has been given for the total lack of refunds so far.

I do have some sympathy with the organisers - it was a bold move to try to establish a major festival of the scope of the one planned, in the North.I'm sure that, if the weather had been kind, it would have been great. As it is, I think the organisers have certainly undermined their credibility with their lack of transparency and communication.

We won't be going to the rescheduled event as it clashes with Ryedale Folk Weekend, otherwise we might have gone for the ticket upgrade option.

Don't blame the artists for your lack of a refund. I can confirm at least some of them have not been paid their fees either. Can't speak for all of them though.

I don't think anyone is blaming the artists - they're entitled to cancellation fees if there is little notice given. My thought was that the organisers were being too ambitious in the first place, certainly unless there was substantial sponsorship up front.

Hi Barbara and everyone in the same boat. I have not, as yet, received a reply to my letter sent to Events Office. However I have found out that if you paid for your tickets by credit card there maybe a way that the credit card company will refund the money and then chase the company that should have provided the service - in this case The Events Office.
I feel very sorry for the organisers that this situation has arisen but I do strongly feel that they should have been posting updates on their web site so that we would know what was happening and not leaving us in the dark so to speak.

What a shame it all is.
Comiserations to all, customers, artists and organisers.
It does seem a pity that no one from the organisers could have just left some information on the thread here.
Even folkies can be reasonable if they are treated with a little respect and given info.

From a post I made elsewhere when someone else asked about refunds...

At least one of the guys involved in organising it is a bit of a local character, who cycles between having loads of money and being bankrupt every few years. He seems to be heading towards a bankrupt phase at present, having recently, I believe, sold his trendy wine bar. He's made quite a lot of people in Pickering very unhappy through various means and personally, having met him on several occasions, I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him.

Personally, I wouldn't get your hopes up folks but I'd love to be proved wrong, so we'll see.

This is all, of course, just my opinion and should be treated as such.

I have just posted this on their forum. We will see what happens.

As a folk club organiser and somebody that supported your Festival, I have to say that I am very disappointed at your response to the general public after cancelling this event.

There are a huge amount of people who have not received their money back

Many are taking the issue up legally

Many are complaining that you are using evasive comments and have no intention of paying the money back.

Is there anybody who would like to respond to that.

Failing that I will not be recommending or handing out brochures for your supposed event in 2009.

I find it shameful and a slur on decent organisers

Incidentally this post will be on other forums just in case you decide to delete it on this thread

This may seem like a stupid question - but is anyone going to the rescheduled festival? If not, why not come to Ryedale Folk Weekend on the same weekend, just up the road from Pickering in beautiful Hutton-le-Hole. it was great last year and I reckon it will be even better this year.

Indeed Mr. Leveller, and the provisional line up for Ryedale 2009 so far is:

Mawkin:Causley, Jackie Oates, Dave Goulder, Brother Crow, Lucy Ward, The Mick West Trio, Dave Burland, Richard Grainger, Steve Dawes & Helen Pitt, Adrian O, Dick Miles, Kim Wyrd Guy with more to come...

I hope things get sort of out for all of you waiting for money, and I genuinely wish the Pickering Festival all the success for the future...it's just a shame they've chosen a weekend in 2009 when there's another established festival under ten miles away.

Ryedale is a great venue, with the main concerts taking place in the reconstruction of a medieval Manor House. Those of you who were there last year will know the acoustics were great...

Best Wishes,
Graeme,
Brother Crow.

That's a fantastic line-up, Graeme. Will we be hearing selections from a third Brother Crow CD (worn the first two out!)? It'll be great to see those cheeky Mawkin lads again - hope the pub's got extra beer stocks in. And what about Lucy getting through to the finals of the Young Folk Musician of the Year Awards? Even more fantastic if she wins and, listening to the preview on Mike Harding last night, she's got a very good chance. (I think she's the only person we know who's young enough to enter!). Good luck, Luce!

Anyway, Whipstaff will be there to join in the singarounds (hope Jeanette remembers to reserve us a caravan spot)- we'll see you at KFFC BBB in November, if not before.

Barbara, I read that you said that there has been an update on the festival website, please can you tell me where this is?
I have contacted the credit card company that I used to purchase the tickets and have been told that they will look into this but it may take some time due to the airline XL going bust.
I have also heard that the stall holders are also still waiting for their refunds.
Does anyone know of anyone that has indeed received their refund as that news may bring some more hope!
All of this could have been allayed if the Events Office had kept us all up to date with what was happening and I am sure that if they had then they would have had a great many more people wanting to attend the proposed festival for next year, although Rydale is looking preferable to me at this moment in time.

Yes, it's a cracking line up...

...Lucy Ward is Fab, and she most certainly has our support for Young Folk Musician of the Year. Get her booked for your club now...such stage presence for one so young...!

Third BC CD....well, it's written, and we're spending Dec/Jan rehearsing the new songs before starting the recording. Some of you that saw us prior to the release of Hollow Hills will have seen some of the "works in progress" such as "Once Their Were So Few", "Between The Forest and the Shore", "Just Another High Street" and "Cold".

Not sure when we'll release it as we've decided not to commit our selves just yet. We may actually have a couple of cheerful songs on there, though to counterbalance, there may well be also the bleakest song we've ever written...

...we probably ought to create another thread, I don't want to hijack this one, as people getting their money back is the most important thing here.

Best Wishes,
Graeme, Brother Crow.

To answer my own question: The Events Office Limited (based in Pickering) was dissolved in May 2007. There is an Events Office (Europe) Limited based at a chartered accountant's in Lincoln - don't know if they are the same people but they have never filed any account and these are now overdue.

If the organisers of the Pickering Festival are not a limited company, we can take action against the individuals themselves.

EVERYONE! Please listen carefully!

I doubt, very much, that anyone will recieve any refund at all. I live in Pickering and everyone here knows that the organisers for this event, have either gone bust, or bee in trouble with the tax man. For what everyone knows, none of the showfield belongs to simon boak anymore, it belongs to a consortium of 5 people. Chances are he has used your money to pay off his debts. Im sorry to dissapoint you all but it is common knowledge in the town that the events office is a disaster. Money is oqwed to MANY local firms who have supplied goods for events down at the showfield, and, to be honest many of these firms will never ever see there money back out of it. Its a damn farce and pure piss take of the local firms, and all you people who have supported such events as this one. Sorry.

Hi, I did manage to speak to a nice chap at the events office who said that they would refund me via postal order /cheque. My credit card company advised me that they shouldnot be doing this and have to refund the card. So I asked the credit card company to persue the refund as opposed to me waiting any longer for a payment from the Events Office. I did manage to get a refund via my credit card company who I guess are now trying to get the refund from Mr S Boak and Co.
I think that people have to speak to someone in the events office to push them into puting you on the next payment date for the postal order/ cheque run - as I was told.
Good Luck

I am responding to the e mail from the ANONYMOUS Pickering resident Topsy Kretts!. I have NOT been in trouble with the tax man. A consortium does not or never has owned the showground. I dont know where youre information comes from about hundreds of Pickering people waiting for refunds as only 27 tickets were sold in town. What is true is that it is difficult trying to pay the commercial mortgage on the showground as it is currently £5000 a week interest only. As for the one about been arrested - North Yorkshire Police currently use the showground to train police dogs and there is sometimes up to 9 police vans on the ground during the training sessions - they could do with a live chase if youre interested Topsy!

I've bloomin had enough and am going to send a letter like Barbara did as this is beyond a joke now. No Christmas card from me Mr Boak that's for sure. Well, guess what have tried all morning and no reply.

Yet another person trying to get a refund - all I've been getting are empty promises too - no replies to emails, not returning phone calls so I'll be trying to get my refund from the credit card company I used.

Tried ringing them today and got the message "This line does not accept incoming calls" so it looks like they have closed up shop.

Has anybody tried visiting their offices? - Not being local to Pickering (250 miles away so a 500 mile wasted round trip back in August) I don't know if this is even possible.

Hi I am yet another poor sucker who has been taken for a ride by this bunch of criminals. I bought tickets for £120. Had same experience as the rest of you. Has anyone contacted the police?

Whilst any legal advice is just the result of my own experience, I do believe that if you paid by credit card then you can claim from your credit card company because it is over £100.00, which is the lower limit.

Surprise, surprise, we got an invitation to next year's event with the complimentary package, whether or not we have had a refund.
Guess what? we won't be going. We have not had any refund yet and what have they done to make us trust them for next year? I would not go if they paid me. In fact I was supposed to be getting paid to stage manage this year and again guess what? That has not been forthcoming either.

Just received a letter to say The Events Office has ceased trading but another company is acquiring some of the Events Office business... What's the betting that the 'new' company has the same set of directors or owners?

Fat chance of getting any money back from them now.

They have offered a free pass to next years festival (now called "The Yorkshire Folk Festival") even if you have had a refund. This sounds good to start with until you ask yourself what the line up will be - if we are struggling to get a refund what about the bands? So what chance of a line up of a similar quality or any of the acts who were supposed to play last August?

Question is can you trust them? I don't.

I received the same letter yesterday and also assumed that the new company would consist of the same people, presumably if the Events Office has had to stop trading and its business is being taken over by another company this information will be in the public domain along with the names of the director of the new company, I take it isnt yet?

i have also had email requests for my £300 to be refunded ignored. i have recently sent a written request with a given time scale (for what its worth ) following legal advice. i wondered if any collective action is being organised, as previuosly blogs have mentioned possible formation of an action group?
i am annoyed at being duped out of my hard earned, they seem to be just getting away with poccketing our cash!!!

I have just been in touch with consumer direct again. I sent a recorded delivery letter threatening legal action but it has not been signed for (surprise!). I also received the offer of free (ha ha) tickets for next year. I don't know what to do. I also phoned North Yorkshire police who said I should contact trading standards. They are not interested. Consumer Direct say that each individual would haveto take legal action against the owner of the company. And you could end up even more out of pocket. We should form an action group. If enough of us got together and got in touch with a consumer program like watchdog it may have some effect. If anyone is interested, post in my new thread and tell everyone else you know to do the same. the new thread will be called 'Tell your Pickering FF story here' Then I can write to watchdog with the stories. It might help, you never know.

Maybe try writing to Tony Levene the editor of The Guardian Money section. He appears to be fairly dogged in getting results

Well it looks like the "Yorkshire Folk Festival" we were offered free tickets to isn't going to happen either - the weekend of 23rd 24th and 25th May is now the dates for the Yorkshire Food Festival at the Pickering Show Ground http://www.theeventsoffice.co.uk/ and I guess that will probably sink into the Pickering mud too especially if Mr Boak has anything to do with it.

I might have lost only £80 (which my credit card company won't refund as it's under the £100 threshold) on the tickets but it's the 500 mile round trip for nothing and a disappointed family that really p***ed me off.

It also looks like the bands haven't been paid or compensated either for the last minute cancellation. I found this on The Waterboys web site

PICKERING FESTIVAL REFUNDS UPDATE
27th Jan 2009

Many people have contacted us to say they still haven't received ticket refunds for the cancelled Pickering Festival of last August. We're very sorry to hear this but not surprised, because The Waterboys haven't been paid either despite the show being cancelled only the day before and the band having already incurred costs in advance. Anyone still waiting for refunds is advised to report the matter to The Trading Standards and Consumer Advice Office, 9 St Leonard's Place, York YO1 7ET. Or you could try chasing the promoter: Simon Boak, The Events Office, PO Box 1, Pickering, North Yorkshire, YO18 7YG. Telephone; 01751 473780. Good luck!

I have been disappointed as still waiting for four tickets to be refunded. promised this in January but nothing has happenned. no reply to emails. I was ok about waiting for the event in 2009 and having sympathy with the organisers but now feel have been duped.
The telephone line is not taking incoming calls either! I will be contacting trading standards to see if theres anything can be done.

Is there an action group on this? please let me know.

Jackie
Have been in touch with the organisers of the Gateway To The Moors Festival (formerly Pickering Folk Fest.) They say that although the debt from the previous organiser, Simon Boak, is not theirs, they will be issuing complimentary tickets to those who did not receive a refund as soon as the tickets go on sale. They have a list of all those (approx. 50 %) who DID receive a refund. The date has been changed to 14-16th August and not 4-6th Sept as stated on some websites. Have just contacted my credit card company having been in discussion for months, to be told I cannot claim from them!

Not much about Pickering - but if you search on Google for the words "Google Submission" you will find how to and do the same for Yahoo.

After that there is plenty you can do on your website - investigate "metadata" these are line in te HTML that can hold keywords.

And link to as many other sites that are relevant. And try to get them to link to you (eg carpet stores).

Good luck - and maybe you will clean-up. **BG**

Now the Gateways to the moors festival has been cancelled too, still no refund (no surprise there then!) As for Mr Boak having nothing to do with the new events company, why was he seen giving out the money to traction engine owners at the Selby Steam Fair 2 weeks ago??

Having waited for the rearranged folk festival to occur in May and then August 2009, I have recently discovered that the event has again been cancelled. Upto now I have not tried to claim a refund (paid via a debit card for 2 tickets + camping). I have read the many mails and links and would ideally like to attempt to try and claim my money back now, but think it is too too late. Any ideas and who do i write to ?? is the Events and Exhibitions Ltd in Leeds address (on a correspondence from last December any use?) Do trading standards respond. It looks like i will have to write this one off?

Personally, I think the only way you would get reimbursed is to pursue Simon Boak, as the new organisers have, supposedly, nothing to do with him now and have bought the showground from him. How you contact him, I have no idea. I actually got my money back some months ago and was paid with a building society cheque from Mr Boak's personal account.

Unwelcome news to those owed money.

There has been aledgedly even more trouble concerning the organisers following severe problems at the showground on Sunday.
I enclose a press release from "The Press" in York
"Police called after Pickering Traction Engine Rally exhibitors block exits
8:37am Monday 10th August 2009

POLICE were called to a huge steam show in North Yorkshire after a sudden dispute led to angry exhibitors blocking the exits.
A row over the arrangements for the Pickering Traction Engine Rally flared during the final stages of its four-day stay at the town's showground following what stallholders say was an unexpected and "fiery" afternoon meeting with organisers.
It led to lorries, trucks and some of the vehicles on show at the event – which is believed to have attracted more than 50,000 visitors – being used to blockade the exits to the venue. Police were eventually able to clear the way after 5pm.
The reasons for the protest are unclear, but the company behind the rally – Leeds-based Events & Exhibitions Ltd – was unavailable for comment yesterday, despite repeated attempts by The Press to contact them.
One of the show's exhibitors, who did not want to be named, said: "We were all called into a meeting at about 3pm and were told there had been some problems – it was certainly fiery.
"Everybody was furious afterwards and the next thing we knew people were loading up their vehicles and taking them round to block the entrances to the showground, saying they weren't leaving until they got answers on certain things.
"Nobody who can tell us exactly what has been happening seems to have been around, but there has been a lot of anger."
Both the new owners and the original owners were allegedly involved in the dispute."

This "may" result in even less a chance of anyone receiving a refund from anyone.
