Subject: Is 'Cantus Delictus' An Organization?

The Wikipedia page "Bowed Psaltery" has a picture of a person playing said instrument and wearing a tee with the logo "Cantus Delictus." Context and translation suggest that this might be an organization devoted to music history. I have left a request on said page for the poster of the photo to share further info, and have Googled the phrase but nothing is available there. Do any Catters have any knowledge of this organization, if it is an organization and not just someone's ploy to sell more tee-shirts?

Chicken Charlie

PS. I would appreciate it if the usual replies listing all known Latin derivatives of the words "cantus" and "delictus," outright rejections of my concept of God, and above all, whether or not the bowed psaltery is a true "folk" instrument be omitted this time around. I get all that stuff; really I do.

Martin--

The person with the shirt is interested in an instrument which has roots going back to various Old Testament references, even though the bowed psaltery in its modern form is about two generations removed from what the ancient Hebrews were probably using. "Dead Music" suggests to me an interest in resurrecting same, else why adopt it as a motto?

Oops--Correction. Make that "Cantus Delecti," and I overlooked a lead--it's actually a "medieval band." So my question now is, has anybody ever come across these folk? Does anybody know where they are located?

See the German twosome on Youtube- Falkenlied.

Other references can be googled. A cd 'Cantus buranus' is forthcoming. I doubt that they will ever be featured in "Goldberg" (old music magazine).

"Dead Music" is not a great translation, I'm afraid. "Delictum" is Latin for "offence" - and is the origin of "corpus delicti", which has nothing to do with dead bodies!

That said, I thought that band might be the target.

'Offensive singing'- perhaps an apt translation.

Oh, just seen this thread.

I am that woman with this shirt at this instrument.

For us "Corpus Delicti" was a playground of words, so we decided to give us the name of Cantus Delicti. Cantus is Latin an means something like "song". So it means "Song of evidence".

I'm just seeing this as well. The psaltery is an ancient instrument but we've not been able to find any proof that the bowed instrument is really that old.
If you are interested in the bowed psaltery please visit psalterystrings.ning.com
Take care!
