Subject: CHORDS PLEASE: Leader of the Pack
From: Keith Rawlings
Date: 23 Apr 97 - 11:49 PM

I appreciate very much if someone would give me the guitar chords for "Leader of the Pack" by The Shangi-Las. A few chosen lyrics also along with the chords would help me in placing them in the song itself. Thanks!

Well, I haven't found chords, but at least we ought to have the lyrics:

Leader of the Pack
(George Morton, Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich, 1964)
Recorded by The Shangri-las

[Spoken]
Is she still goin' out with him?
I dunno.
Here she comes. Let's ask her.
Hey, Betty, is that Jimmy's ring you're wearin'?
Uh-huh.
Is he pickin' you up after school today?
Nunh-unh.
By the way, where'd you meet him?

[Sung]
I met him at the candy store
He turned around and smiled at me - you get the picture (Yes, we see.)
That's when I fell for - the leader of the pack

My folks were always putting him down (down, down)
They said he came from the wrong side of town
(What'dya mean when you say that he came from the wrong side of town?)
They told me he was bad
But I knew he was sad
That's why I fell for - the leader of the pack.

One day my dad said "find someone new"
I had to tell my Jim we were through
He stood there and asked me why
But all I could do was cry
I'm sorry I hurt you - the leader of the pack.

[Spoken]
He sort of smiled and kissed me goodbye
The tears were beginning to show
And as he left me on that rainy night
I begged him to go slow
But whether he heard, I'll never know
Look out! Look out! Look out!

[Sung]
I felt so helpless - what could I do?
Remembering all the things we'd been through
At school they all stop and stare
I can't hide the tears, but I don't care
I'll never forget you - the leader of the pack.

The leader of the pack - now he's gone
The leader of the pack - now he's gone
The leader of the pack - now he's gone.....

But why stop there????

Teen Angel
(words & Music by Red & Jean Surrey, 1960)
polularized by Mark Dinning

Teen angel, teen angel, teen angel, oooo

That fateful night, the car was stalled
Upon the railroad track
I pulled you out and we were safe
But you went running back

Teen angel, can you hear me?
Teen angel, can you see me?
Are you somewhere up above?
And am I still your one true love?

What was it you were looking for
That took your life that night?
They say they found my high school ring
Clutched in your fingers tight

Teen angel, can you hear me?
Teen angel, can you see me?
Are you somewhere up above?
And am I still your one true love?

Just sweet sisteen, and now you're gone
They've taken you away
I can no longer kiss your lips
They buried you today

Teen angel, can you hear me?
Teen angel, can you see me?
Are you somewhere up above?
And am I still your one true love?

Teen angel, teen angel, teen angel, oooo

Subject: ADDPOP Tell Laura I Love Her
From: Joe Offer
Date: 04 Aug 08 - 09:20 PM

And that's not all....

Tell Laura I Love Her
Words and music by Jeff Barry and Ben Raleigh, 1960
As recorded by Ray Peterson, 1960

Laura and Tommy were lovers.
He wanted to give her everything:
Flowers, presents,
And most of all, a wedding ring.

He saw a sign for a stock-car race.
A thousand-dollar prize, it read.
He couldn't get Laura on the phone,
So to her mother, Tommy said:

"Tell Laura I love her.
Tell Laura I need her.
Tell Laura I may be late.
I've something to do, that cannot wait."

He drove his car to the racing ground.
He was the youngest driver there.
The crowd roared as they started the race.
Around the track they drove at a deadly pace.

No one knows what happened that day,
How his car overturned in flames,
But as they pulled him from the twisted wreck,
With his dying breath, they heard him say:

"Tell Laura I love her.
Tell Laura I need her.
Tell Laura not to cry.
My love for her will never die."

Now in the chapel where Laura prays
For her poor Tommy, who passed away--
It was just for Laura he lived and died--
Alone in the chapel, she can hear him cry:

"Tell Laura I love her.
Tell Laura I need her.
Tell Laura not to cry.
My love for her will never die.

"Tell Laura I love her.
Tell Laura I love her....[FADE]

From: Emma B

well if you insist and....
while we're at it .....

EBONY EYES The Everly Brothers

On a weekend pass I wouldn't have had time
To get home and marry that baby of mine
So I went to the chaplain and he authorized
Me to send for my ebony eyes

My ebony eyes was coming to me
From out of the skies on Flight 12-03
In an hour or two I would whisper I do
To my beautiful ebony eyes

The plane was way overdue, so I went inside to the airlines desk and I said Sir
I wonder why 12-03 is so late He said Aww, they probably took off late
Or they may have run into some turbulent weather and had to alter their course
I went back outside and I waited at the gate and I watched the beacon light from the
control tower as it whipped through the dark ebony skies as if it were searching for
(my ebony eyes) And then came the announcement over the loudspeaker
Would those having relatives or friends on flight number 12-03 please report to the
chapel across the street at once

Then I felt a burning break deep inside
And I knew the heavenly ebony skies
Had taken my life's most wonderful prize
My beautiful ebony eyes

If I ever get to heaven I'll bet
The first angel I'll recognize
She'll smile at me and I know she will be
My beautiful ebony eyes

sniff sniff :)

I gotta work on this one....

Oh where, oh where, can my baby be?
The Lord took her away from me.
She's gone to heaven, so I've got to be good.
So I can see my baby when I leave this world.

Oh, that's Last Kiss...

Terry

By Twinkle

Terry, Terry

He said to me he wanted to be near to me
He said he never wanted to be out of my sight
But it's too late to give this boy my love tonight
Please wait at the gate of heaven for me, Terry.

He said to me he wanted to be close by my side
We had a quarrel, I was untrue on the night he died
And it's too late to tell this boy how great was
Please wait at the gate of heaven for me, Terry.

He rode into the night, accelerated his motorbike
I cried to him in fright, don't do it, don't do it, don.t do it.

He said to me you are the one I want to be with
He said to me you are the one who my love I shall give
One day he'll know how hard I prayed for him to live
Please wait at the gate of heaven for me, Terry.

He rode into the night, accelerated his motorbike
I cried to him in fright, don't do it, don't do it, don't do it.

He said to me you are the one I want to be with
He said to me you are the one who my love I shall give
One day he'll know how hard I prayed for him to live
Please wait at the gate of heaven for me, Terry.

Terry, Terry, Terry

Twinkle, one hit wonder of 1964.

And of course the inevitable parody:

He rode into the muck,
Accelerated his dumper truck,
I cried to him oh f***,
don't do it, don't do it, don't do it.

I remember it as

He had a hunk of cycle [pronounced "sickle"]
that took off like a gun

I have it on an old LP.

I remember that the last verse ends something like

But he hit a screaming diesel that was California [possibly pronounced "Californee"] bound
and when they cleared the wreckage all they found ...
were his black denim trousers (etc.)

The Springsteen song is probably "The wreck on the highway" from the album "The river"

I remember a parody from the early '70's of the Shangri-La's song. It concerned a roadie and was called "the packer of the leads"
Does anyone remember it or even have the words? I don't recall who the artist was but I remember it was quite funny.

From: Joe Offer
Date: 05 Aug 08 - 01:56 PM

Well, Ferrara posted her recollection of this in another thread, but I verified this with the recording.
-Joe-

Black Denim Trousers
Words and Music by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller
as sung on "The Diamonds Collection" -- Stardust CD-1010 -charted by The Cheers at # 6 in 1955

He wore black denim trousers and motorcycle boots
And a black leather jacket with an eagle on the back
He had a hopped-up 'cicle that took off like a gun
That fool was the terror of Highway 101

Well, he never washed his face and he never combed his hair
He had axle grease imbedded underneath his fingernails
On the muscle of his arm was a red tattoo
A picture of a heart saying "Mother, I love you"

He had a pretty girlfriend by the name of Mary Lou
But he treated her just like he treated all the rest
And everybody pitied her and everybody knew
He loved that doggone motorcycle best

He wore black denim trousers and motorcycle boots
And a black leather jacket with an eagle on the back
He had a hopped-up 'cicle that took off like a gun
That fool was the terror of Highway 101

Mary Lou, poor girl, she pleaded and she begged him not to leave
She said "I've got a feeling if you ride tonight I'll grieve."
But her tears were shed in vain and her every word was lost
In the rumble of his engine and the smoke from his exhaust

Then he took off like the Devil and there was fire in his eyes!!
He said "I'll go a thousand miles before the sun can rise."
But he hit a screamin' diesel that was California-bound
And when they cleared the wreckage, all they found

Was his black denim trousers and motorcycle boots
And a black leather jacket with an eagle on the back
But they couldn't find the 'cicle that took off like a gun
And they never found the terror of Highway 1 oh 1.

Lyrics transcribed by "Robin Hood" (a legendary transcriber of lyrics), copied from http://uk.geocities.com/hyohsilver/words.htm which plays the recording over and over and over.....

Maybe "The Packer of the Leads" had something to do with Neil Lewis. It is a song, which I had heard of, but never actually heard. I think it actually defies parody, because the original is funny enough!

Another parody of Leader of the Pack was Leader of the Laundromat. Very silly, but it actually got some airplay way back when. Lyrics available at http://digitaldreamdoor.nutsie.com/pages/lyrics2/nov_leaderlaun.html and elsewhere.

The original thread subject was Dead Teenager Songs, so Bonny Boy (also known as The Trees They Grow High, and other variants) qualifies on the basis of this stanza:

At the age of sixteen years he was a married man,
And at the age of seventeen the father of a son,
But at the age of eighteen, o'er his grave the grass grew green;
Cruel death put an end to his growing.
