Subject: Network for Singarounds? From: Les in Chorlton Date: 02 Aug 08 - 03:28 AM Singarounds seem to be increasingly popular. Does any data base or web-based network exist for Singarounds in the UK? How easy would it be so set one up? Cheers Les in Chorlton |
Subject: RE: Network for Singarounds? From: melodeonboy Date: 02 Aug 08 - 03:41 AM Wouldn't a lot of them be listed (along with all the other stuff) on Folk Orbit, Les? |
Subject: RE: Network for Singarounds? From: Les in Chorlton Date: 02 Aug 08 - 03:48 AM I am sure you are right. I get the feeling that Singarounds tend not to be weekly and so a bit harder to nail down. One of those maps for the country with Singarounds on would help us all - especially away from home with work or holiday. It would also help with fitting in with other peoples 'first / second / third' Wednesday etc. of the month. How easy is it to set up one of those maps to which people can add their own details? Cheers L in C |
Subject: RE: Network for Singarounds? From: Nick Date: 02 Aug 08 - 03:51 AM You could ask the chap who runs Folk Map or encourage people to add their sites! |
Subject: RE: Network for Singarounds? From: r.padgett Date: 02 Aug 08 - 04:03 AM Jeff Wright of Keepers Fold runs an organisation called Front Room Folk, worthy of mention and which holds singarounds etc largely Nth Yorkshire Ray |
Subject: RE: Network for Singarounds? From: Les in Chorlton Date: 02 Aug 08 - 04:07 AM Thanks Nick, the Folk Map does exactly what I had in mind. It looks really useful. Is it widely used? Cheers L in C |
Subject: RE: Network for Singarounds? From: Nick Date: 02 Aug 08 - 04:25 AM Not sure - the guy who runs it is approachable and would know With a bit of prodding on mudcat we should be able to fill it I would think The more it has on it the more useful it becomes etc |
Subject: RE: Network for Singarounds? From: MartinRyan Date: 02 Aug 08 - 04:37 AM That Folk Map looks to be a very interesting approach. Regards |
Subject: RE: Network for Singarounds? From: Les in Chorlton Date: 02 Aug 08 - 05:34 AM I have placed my Singaround, first Wednesday of the month, The Beech, Chorlton,Manchester, very straight forward, I think. Cheers L in C |
Subject: RE: Network for Singarounds? From: Nick Date: 02 Aug 08 - 05:36 AM Ours was there already - Flaxton North Yorkshire! |
Subject: RE: Network for Singarounds? From: Les in Chorlton Date: 02 Aug 08 - 05:48 AM We have a running problem. The Beech is an excellent venue and we are most welcome, which is just as well because it's just about the only place left in Chorlton with a snug. The real problem is the football that comes through an Albanian Satellite on random Wednesdays and always gets priority! Still we have managed 7 out of 9 since we started. Cheers L in C |
Subject: RE: Network for Singarounds? From: Susan of DT Date: 02 Aug 08 - 06:08 AM My permathread Song Circle Locations only covers the US and Canada, mostly because those are the only ones people posted. If you want me to add the UK, I certainly can. Please include your county and the large town a small town is near. If you do start posting them, I will probably wait a little while before digesting them into groups so I don't need to re-edit it for every new posting. |
Subject: RE: Network for Singarounds? From: Richard Bridge Date: 02 Aug 08 - 07:31 AM That folk map looks good but not a lot of the Kent/South East London stuff is there: Good Intent, Eltham, Maidstone, Moore or Less and Sheppey missing for starters. |
Subject: RE: Network for Singarounds? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 02 Aug 08 - 08:21 AM You could try doing football chants on the footie nights... |
Subject: RE: Network for Singarounds? From: Les in Chorlton Date: 02 Aug 08 - 08:42 AM Yes, that's worth a thought. Trouble is they tend to be United matches and most of the chants are crude and anti-City regardless of who Man U are playing |
Subject: RE: Network for Singarounds? From: MoorleyMan Date: 02 Aug 08 - 11:05 AM Just FYI, Ray: as I am given to understand it, the Front Room Folk to which you refer is a private, invitation-only initiative, and its activities are (for the most part) deliberately not publicised due to the small size of the venues used - so it would not be a candidate for inclusion on any more-widely-available folk map. |

From: melodeonboy Date: 02 Aug 08 - 01:02 PM "That folk map looks good but not a lot of the Kent/South East London stuff is there: Good Intent, Eltham, Maidstone, Moore or Less and Sheppey missing for starters." Indeed, Richard. However, just about all of the above are on the Folk Orbit site. I think it would be worth letting local organisers know about Folk Map as well. |
Subject: RE: Network for Singarounds? From: Richard Bridge Date: 02 Aug 08 - 04:57 PM Folk Orbit very out of date in places. |
Subject: RE: Network for Singarounds? From: BB Date: 02 Aug 08 - 05:10 PM Tony Watts produces a great Folk Diary which covers singarounds, sessions, open mic nights and conventional folk clubs which have floor spots in (at least) Somerset, Dorset and Devon, and has an e-mail list, but, although I thought it was on the Web, I can't now find it. If I do, I'll post the details. Barbara |
Subject: RE: Network for Singarounds? From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 02 Aug 08 - 05:15 PM All online listings are probably out of date. People are quite keen to get their events publicised when they set them up to begin with, but rarely bother to get in touch when they move; and almost never notify when they stop. If Southern events are missing from the map, that is because the people who run them haven't added them. I've been running club and session listings for years, and many online and print resources exist for such; but accuracy depends on the people who organise or attend them taking the trouble to remember where they have placed details, and updating them when they change. Most of us don't have the time to contact everybody every few months to see what they are up to; and none of us, I think, are psychic; though we do keep an ear to the ground. |
Subject: RE: Network for Singarounds? From: growler Date: 02 Aug 08 - 05:20 PM I have posted a similar thread 'Folk Clubs in Kent', perhaps we could combine ideas |
Subject: RE: Network for Singarounds? From: Girl Friday Date: 02 Aug 08 - 05:44 PM I have attempted to register, without success. I thought I had Java but perhaps not. |
Subject: RE: Network for Singarounds? From: VirginiaTam Date: 20 Aug 08 - 02:54 PM It would be great if there was an up to date listing for all of UK. Recently I was looking for sessions near Ambleside and after much frustrating googling found one potential session. Unfortunately it was cancelled for the 4 weeks of August with no indication on the website. I only found out by calling the venue just to check. Any public information re sessions would have to be submitted and kept up to date by organisers who I am sure are stretched to capacity. Organisers need personal assistants. Another thing. I currently attend 2 monthly sessions near Chelmsford. One group would happily welcome visiting performers. The more the merrier. The other I think would not. I have attended 4 sessions of latter and feel quite marginalised. What we learn from this is that it can be very awkward for the visitor if sessions are advertised/ promoted but the group tends to be ummm clique-ish. There needs to be some customer service training in this area. The list of needs to keep sessions rolling on, well publicised, well attended, giving good service, etc. is growing. What we really need is gov'mint funding? Snort! That is one sure way of slinging a spanner into the machinery. Get local authorities involved. If it ain't broke.... fix it until it is. |
Subject: RE: Network for Singarounds? From: Nick Date: 20 Aug 08 - 03:35 PM Richard I'm sure you could add the Kent ones - I added several around York including our own - so nothing to stop you |
Subject: RE: Network for Singarounds? From: My guru always said Date: 20 Aug 08 - 04:08 PM Good to see this thread up! I'm just browsing for Sings next week while we're pottering around Lake District after Shrewsbury FF & before Wallingford Bunkfest. I've had a short glance at the FolkMap site (which I found a bit unwieldy when browsing) but agree that these online listings are only as good as the info that we (the Folk Enthusiasts) supply. It's up to us to keep these resources up to date! |
Subject: RE: Network for Singarounds? From: Dave (Bridge) Date: 20 Aug 08 - 04:15 PM MGAS, There is a folk concert with floor spots in the Skiddaw Hotel in Keswick on Tuesday nights, I believe. The Twa Dogs in Keswick has an afternoon singaround on alternate Sundays. A call to pub would ascertain which Sundays. The Lamplight in Windermere had a session going on Wednesday nights. As allways a phone call would clarify. Enjoy |
Subject: RE: Network for Singarounds? From: My guru always said Date: 20 Aug 08 - 04:16 PM Many thanks for the info Dave!! I'll look into it a bit further tomorrow *grin* |
Subject: RE: Network for Singarounds? From: Frank_Finn Date: 20 Aug 08 - 04:53 PM There is a site in the USA maintained by a man called Christopher Brennan. It lists all the singing sessions in Ireland and many in the USA. It's fairly well up to date and lists the sessions according to county. If you send him an email with details I'm sure he will start a section for the UK. See http://www.irishrochester.org/SINGERS%20WEB/singers2.htm You may email Christopher at mailto:cristoir@optonline.net |
