We're really pleased with the line-up we've been able to piece together when we get our noses back to the grindstone in September.

After several VERY disappointing attendances earlier this year we're hoping this programme will lure a few folks down to the Cabbage Patch. Our reserves are severely depleted so we're hoping the tide will now turn.

If people don't come out in sufficient quantities to see this lot I think there's a fair chance we'll be throwing in the old towel at Christmas (joking..........or am I?)

Sep 7th       GROWLING OLD MEN      £9 adv/£10

The four members of Growling Old Men will be very familiar to British bluegrass fans. The half-English, half-American quartet has toured twice in the UK and all four have taught at Sore Fingers at least once. Featuring Leon Hunt on banjo, Dom Harrison on bass, Ben Winship on mandolin and John Lowell on guitar, the band has now taken its act one step further and produced the recently released album, "Shuttle Diplomacy".

The history of the band stretches back quite some time. Leon and Dom have been working together for years as members of Daily Planet, and Ben and John have played together in various groups including Kane's River and, of course, Growling Old Men. The collaboration between the two halves has been in the works since the late 1990s. This short tour coincides with their headlining appearance at the Didmarton Bluegrass Festival.

Strange. I've always found it a very friendly club. And their guests are reliably high quality and interesting. I love Gerry's individual bookings policy. And it's a great venue.

All in my humble opiniion, of course.

The guest list is very impressive. There are a number of artists there I'd go a long way to see (and might well have to as I live in Kent!).

Thanks for your kind words, Hamish (Och....you're not so bad yoursel'...and I love YOUR individual songs policy. PPLUS your playing is always reliably high quality and interesting!)

To get everyone in the mood for the Growling Old Men on Sunday here's a youtube clip of one of the British Growlers, Leon Hunt and some buddies from Flook in session mode playing 'The Silver Spire' at Cambridge Folk Festival a few years back. Not sure whether we'll have anything like this on Sunday of course (but if Mike McGoldrick piches up we'll be more than happy)

With ref to the first message above....

the following concert is now confirmed (with tickets already on sale)

Sun Dec 7th: GRACE, HEWAT, POLWART

"Annie Grace, Corrina Hewat and Karine Polwart first discovered their rare vocal chemistry working together on projects like Scottish Women and The Unusual Suspects. Mistresses of harmony all, they made their official debut as a trio with this Burns Night appearance at Celtic Connections, after a rapturous response to their previous handful of low-key gigs. The sold-out show represented a resplendent home-grown contribution to the "voices of the world" theme at this year's festival.

While all three are instrumentalists as well as singers – Grace on whistles and pipes, Hewat on harp and Polwart on guitar – the new project's emphasis is firmly on the vocals. Most of the songs' arrangements were a capella, with only the subtlest of accompaniment deployed elsewhere"

If you mean Chuck Brodsky he was originally scheduled for late Jan to coincide with an appearance at Celtic Connections....that trip's now been cancelled (or postponed anyway).

If you mean Chuck Berry....discussions are ongoing but there's nothing to report yet!
