Likewise, congratulations to Martin on another fantastic Deal Festival, the Morris sides had a wonderful time entertaining large crowds around the town, I feel sorry for those sides that weren't able to make it this year as we were really looked after by the organisers. Will definitely be back next year

It seems that a good time was had by all. Mr Leopard has now caught the lurgy, but, like the troupers we are, we still went out and ran last night's session at the Fox and Hounds. Despite the low turnout (apparently some of the locals have had this virus), we had a great evening again. Don says he'll be back, and it will be good to see Dead Horse again.

No, my van is a little VW type2, but I didn't camp in the end, a friend let me stay in their room in town.

Might have to camp next year though.

Slightly belated contribution, but I would like to add to all the compliments above.


Bloody good festival. It was my first visit to Deal and I thought that it was really good.

The Bohemian was my first port of call on both Sat and Sunday. Really sorry to miss the beginning but Saturdays session went on well into the afternoon with no sign of flagging.

Looked in at the Ship and later on, up at the Saracens Head, sat in on the later stages of the afternoon session. Enjoyed it all. Good performers, nice people, lovely town.

Likewise on Sunday. The sun shone on the righteous and everyone must have been sunburned! Another great session.

In between times dropped in to the Town Hall, Marion Button was great as she always is.

What a great festival this is!

Only slight minor gripe - some of the venues are a bit on the cramped side. But I loved it and I'll be back next year.

Many thanks, Martin, for organising such an enjoyable festival packed with singarounds, concerts and workshops. It was also great to be able to walk onto an empty beach after breakfast and practise my concertina in the early morning sun!

yup, excellent festival- stunning braderie too- and free coffee & cakes in the church... lots of good sessions and how that mr barden always attracts the sunshine i don't know! Big thanks to Martin & all the organisers, because to get something so laid back takes a lot of sorting out! Great to see Brian & Marion out & about too, taking the sea air... on to tenterden in a couple of weeks!

Had a great time both days, weather good, singing & playing good, ale good.
Lotsa folks adding to the sessions. Audience enjoyed it as much as we did.
Was a bit unfortunate in my choice of seating, as I was so close to Richard I couldn't throw things at him.
That chippy did resemble a music shop with all the instruments piled up on and under seats as we fed the inner folkie afterwards :-)
Next year I will hire me a chauffer so I can sample a few more ales.

Thanks for the brekkies on both days Richard, and thanks for the singing, playing and company too. The weather was spot on, the Bohemian made us welcome as always ad on a personal note I'd just like to say a big thank you to all who came, played, sang or just listened. Also to Brian & Marion Rodgers who's session in the Ship later was brilliant. Finally, a big thank you to the organisers.All in all a great festival.

Hope you get better soon Sue (GirlFriday). I wondered what had happened to you.

What a glorious couple of days!

I was a few hours late for the off (clients!) but caught up with John the Barden of England and Jan at Cottington, hurriedly levelled the vardo, they even put grub into me and off we went by taxi to Walmer folk club where John and I got a few songs and a few pints (and truth to tell a little whisky) each. Which one were you Arnie - or are you Adrian O in disguise??

Then taxi back and John and I put the world to rights and drank his port for a couple of hours!

Saturday morning I fried for 3 which improved heads, and taxi back to the Bohemian where the sun shone and the beer disappeared and it was the nicest of sessions - not too many people at any given time, so one never had to wait too long for a song, but not so few that one felt abandoned. Even Dead Horse forgot (mostly) to heckle. A couple of totally spectacular guests (they know who they are and I understand do not want to grandstand) - one with a voice to make my noisy daughter sound quiet, and hands like albino tarantulas with alopecia on speed all over the guitar neck - I swear I saw a 7 fret left hand stretch while Brian Rodgers was getting a ribbing about the guitar being out of tune...

Then the Great British Fish'n'chips (it seemd like every folkie in town was in that chippy) and a stroll to the Ship.

Ship! It was rammed like a slaver on the the Atlantic run!

But after a while Brian and Marion restored just enough but not too much order (although I did count at least three people who will not have enjoyed Sunday morning, one of whom was a pain in the bum), but the bar staff were from time to time slow and surly. Nonetheless the beer kept somehow vanishing, joined by some brandy.

You could have knocked me down with a feather when I saw a young lad (maybe 16 to 18) singing along with me on Roger Watson's "Watercress-O" which I think of as a fairly obscure song, and there were a couple of other people who I would have guessed to be under 20 paying close attention to the singing, too.

Adrian O produced a couple of lovely songs, and Synbyn had us all in stitches several times.

Then taxi back to Cottington (the taxis are SO reasonable, unlike on the peninsular), nibble at exotic cheeses I found in a lovely little shop near the town hall and collapse, largely voiceless on my part.

Sunday more frying and a leisurely trot home.



Why can't every festival be like that?   Great singing, great company, mostly helpful locals and some who obviously were totally up for the fest.

Well, it's Saturday morning and the sun is shining with the good weather due to continue over the Deal Maritime Festival weekend. Martin hits it lucky with the weather every year and with our recent washed-out summers, September is obviously the time to be holding folk festivals! A great start to the weekend last night - we made the Deal Folk Club which was pretty busy considering the competition of John Kirkpatrick & Chris Nixon at the Town Hall. Me & Carole will be on the door at Deal Town Hall this aft so hope to see some of you there for Jings, Rambling Boys, Bob Kenward, Ken, Sue, Bernie etc. etc. Looks like we're in for a good weekend's music and Martin deserves a big vote of thanks for all the work he's put into organising this - and everyone else who's involved in putting this on for another year.

Read it again Richard. The Ship details and the Saracens Ed details are not very well separated.
The No Worries singaround/session goes on til Dropping Time, as does Happy Trails.
I shall have to move between both unless I get a recurrence of the old war wound which will mean staying in the Ship to recover :-)

we have been asked to run the first Deal Maritime "sea farers singaround" in aid of the RNLI, all songs must have a nautical theme.
it's going to be at the Royal hotel from 1230pm to 2pm.
so come along and have a blast, you cant get closer to the sea than this without getting wet.

Last time I saw him was in Bridgnorth, I think, at the last of the festivals held there before they moved to Shrewsbury.

I'll be at Cottington Lakes, and you're always welcome to share our cab in Richard. It really doesn't cost much. Between 4 people it would be less than £1.50 each way - say the price of a beer. I rather like the set-up at Cottington Lakes - and there's still the Birthday ort to drink.

Bishop Guldulfs Morris usually go to Cottington Park campsite - it's taxi-able.

Is there anywhere nearer? I think the other campsite by the Golf club is actually further from the action.

Thanks for the compliments regarding the mixed sessions in the garden of 'The Bohemian' in Deal, but honestly it's so good to hear other people setting to and singing that my role really is simple and easy. Let's hope the sun shines on us again this year as it's failed to do that often so far!

I'm also going to try one or two of the pubs to see if they have a room.

Either way it looks as if it should be a good weekend. I'm looking forwad to it.

Parking on the prom would be a better bet, but get there early as most available spots disappear quite quickly.
I have parked my old camper there on a couple of occasions and can heartily recommend it over camping some miles out of town.

K/Van, park out at Cottington Lakes and pre-book your taxis, it isn't that expensive. Bishop Gundulf will probably be out there and I expect we can roster you in with our driving roster or collective taxis.

Just look out for the two men in drag, one as a bunny girl and the other in an evening dress - I expect the campsite is still talking about both of them going into the gents last year.

The line up looks pretty good and I would like to go along to see what it's like.
