From: Lizzie Cornish 1

Having just discovered Ron's brilliant progamme this evening, I thought he and 'it' should have their own thread.

Here's where and how to listen, click the link below, then click the 'WFDU Streaming On The Web' link and that takes you to the Warpradio picture, which is the link to the show...

Ron's 'Traditions' Programme

(with thanks to Jeri, for the original link in Bruce's 'Matters of the Heart' thread)

Today, Ron played, amongst others, some beautiful tracks from the new CDs of Joan Baez - 'Day After Tomorrow'...and Bruce Murdoch - 'Matters of the Heart'

And of course, there's a link between these two artists, with Joan's sister, Mimi, being married to Richard Farina, who (with a very young Bruce) was on the Singer Songwriter Project, along with David Cohen (now David Blue) and Patrick Sky.

Great to hear their new CDs being aired on Ron's show.

Joan Baez

Bruce Murdoch

You can listen 'live' to Ron's show every Sunday, from 3-5pm (New Jersey time) and you'll hear a rich variety of brilliant music! I'm listening to it right now, as I write this. I'm hooked! :0)

And as Ron and Bruce, are both Mudcatters, well, it shows yet again, that this board is something a bit 'special'.

Oh, and to bring a smile, Ron has just finished playing a great track, The Mermaid Song by Great Big Sea, which you can listen to here:

The Mermaid, on Youtube

Just heard about this on Ron's show, and he's going to it as well, so he's going to tell us all about it.

The Philadelphia Folk Festival

That Judy Collins track was lovely.

Ron, who was that last track by? Something about him playing a hurdy gurdy, but I didn't quite catch his name, he sounded like a young Harry Chapin.

Hi Lizzie,
I believe that Ron may have pre-recorded the show for this week.

When he is doing it live he invites listeners to call in while he is spinning the music. The phone number in the studio is 201-692-2012.

By the way, the show is 3 hours long and runs from 3 PM to 6 PM.

Ron does the show every other week and alternates with Bill Hahn (also a Mudcatter) who does the show on the weeks when Ron does not.

Oh, thank you Sol. Trust me to get the time wrong. Doh!

Hey, we can phone Ron? How cool is that? I think we should all ring him the week after next and say "Hello!" :0)

I used to email Mick and Lester over on Folkwaves (BBC Radio Derbyshire) during their show, and Genevieve Tudor on BBC Sunday Folk, she's lovely, very funny too. We'd have a bit of a giggle..and we had a wonderful thread on the BBC board, where lots of us would meet up and listen live to their shows, that was great fun.

This link to the Philadelphia Folk Festival has some great music on it too. Just heard the Oysterband on the music player they have on that site.

I'm going to send Ron's show to my friends over in New Jersey. That'll give them a nice surprise. And I'll put a link to Ron's page on my myspace page too..All helps to spread the word out.

Thank you again for your message.

Max used to do a Mudcat 'radio' show in the days when he was more involved here. It was a lot of fun. We had a chat room open and talked to each other and Max during the show. It was really something--talking to folks in Oz, the UK, Iceland, Canada, New Zealand and the US, and we were all listening to the same music.

I don't suppose that's something that's easily done, especially not when a show's planned out in advance and the guy doing it only has two hands and one brain. It was fun though.

I must try to remember to listen to you guys on Sundays.

I echo what everyone has been saying, Ron's show is superb, he is a knowledgeable and informative host, his selection of music is inspired and best of all, I can listen to it on a dial-up connection.

It was good to hear Bruce on the program too, kind of took me back.

Wow!   I come home from the station and discover this thread - I'm blushing!

Thank you for the kind words. I really appreciate that. Bill and I enjoy sharing the air on Sunday afternoons and showcasing the diverse world of folk music. It was very cool to know that folks were listening in Canada and the UK as well as various parts of the USA!   We've been streaming for a few years now, and it is still a thrill.

I do have to correct something that Rabbi Sol said. I was live today. I normally do not give out the phone number unless I am giving away tickets or a CD. I do love hearing from people, but I have to admit, I get flustered easily and screw up! I also program my show in advance so it is hard to fit in requests - but I will always welcome Mudcatters! :)

Again, I really appreciate the kinds words and your help in spreading the news. I'm grateful that I had an opportunity to play Bruce's superb new CD and share it with eveyone.   I look forward to playing more!!

Having just happened onto this thread I have to concur with all the kind and--very true--words. If memory serves Ron started the program in 1980 (I have been co-hosting since 1994) and is the longest running program on WFDU. Rightfully so.

Glad some more people have now discovered the program with all this new and wonderful technology out there. To hear that people from the U S are now joined by those from around the world is not only thrilling but, hopefully, a harbinger of better understanding of people and their varied cultures and mores.

One has to add that it is only possible to do programming like this on stations that are non-commercial and have a management that is opend to all kinds of ideas and diversified programming.

As an artist I have to say a big thank you to Ron and Bill. I have been on the show with Ron a number of times and it's always a joy to have an "on-air" conversation with him.

Both Ron and Bill do a great job with "Traditions". Bill also hosts a show called "Sunday Simcha".

Great job, guys!

Ohhhhh...I've just tuned in, a little early, and I've got Peter, Paul and Mary, singing 'Blowin' in the Wind'. I haven't heard this for ages.

And I'm 8 years old again. :0)

Peter, Paul and Mary

(Isn't Mary lovely)

Blowin' in the Wind

It's the Top 10 from 1963..just had an Elvis number...and now it's Jan and Dean 'Surf City' Glad those suits went out of fashion, lads.

'Surf City'

'So In Love'..don't recall this one.

Stevie Wonder is Number One..and he was only 13! Yikes, I didn't realise he was *that* young when he started out.

A very young Stevie on Youtube

And Bill's just started now...I think Rick Sobello? was presenting the earlier programme....

Exactly---Rich was doing a 2 hr countdown of the top songs of that year---and, as always, a perfect segue so I could start with a tribute to Ira Tucker (Dixie Hummingbirds) who passed away a few weeks back. A piece featuring Mr. Tucker, Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder.

Hope you caught some of the rest of the program---including the politics, Erik Darling, calypso, and the look back at the 1950s at a local radio station that featured that kind of eclectic mix.

The playlist should be up on the web site tomorrow.

Thanks, Bill.

Here's a few that I caught...

'Love Me Like A Rock' on Youtube..Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder et al   (That was GREAT!)

Jack Williams singing 'Young At Heart' from his new CD 'Don't Let Go' I liked him.

Jack Williams - Main Site    Jack's myspace

And Andrew too..

Andrew Calhoun - Main Site       Andrew's Myspace

Erik Darling with the rest of The Weavers, singing 'Bowling Green'
(couldn't find that song with the Weavers, so hope the one below brings a few smiles.)

Erik Darling   The Weavers 'Oh Sinner Man'

'Bowling Green' with Erik and the Kossoy Sisters

I managed to 'delete' the rest through carelessness...which is soooo annoying! GRRRR! So I'll check the playlist a little later on, when you've got it up on site. By the way I thought you dealt with that double play bit rather well too, you made me smile. ;-)

Looking forward to next week. And thanks for some great music.

Lizzie :0)

And I think Ronnie and Erik's message about George Bush, in that 'Oh Sinner Man' video says it all..

Ronnie: "If ever there was a time when it was appropriate to speak out, *this is the time* That is our treasure. That is our history. That is what living in a democracy is all about

Erik: "The hubris and the gross ineptitude of this president is so *massive* that I think 'Oh Sinner Man' was really a gem of a thing to use. *Someone's gotta say something.*"

The Weavers

Hell, we need our protest singers BACK!

Someone send for Bruce Murdoch, Ron Bankley, et al, fast!

Get them all back to Greenwich Village...and let's get this show back on the road, from where it left off, so long ago, because apathy has swamped everyone for way too long. See..Erik and Ronnie have inspired me! :0)

Thanks Bill, for introducing me to The Weavers. I didn't know much about them, now I do.

And *that* is the power of *good* radio, rather than Radio For Proles, which has swamped so much of mainstream airtime around the world.

Hey, Ron..you have a blog! :0)

Ron's Folk Music Notebook

Guys, I can't find the playlists for the last two weeks. Am I missing the blindingly obvious, as ever...I usually do, it's a gift. ;-)

AND...I've found Mark Thunderwolf amongst your photos! He's a nice chap, I've 'spoken' to him, over on Myspace, a while back now. I like his outlook on life, and he makes hauntingly lovely music too. He's has the wise words "We are the ones we have been waiting for..." on his page somewhere (blogs?) so I took them over to mine, as I thought they were great.

I've literally just googled those words, to see what came up, and you are so not going to believe this!

This is a short film that Phil Ochs would have been proud of, Bill, I'll bet. Don't get put off when you reach the bit with the animals in, as it has an amazing ending and is what the film is about.

We Are The Ones We Have Been Waiting For

I don't know, sometimes, I feel something a bit spooky is going on here.

I discovered your show, purely because of Bruce Murdoch's music, you being the first guys to play his new CD, and now I'm delving into so many of the singer/songwriters from the 60s, sparked off by Bruce and your shows..and finding myself back in that time when the world was going to change for the better. Finding The Weavers, because of your show..

Now, here we are, back full circle with a film that shows how unbelievably apathetic we've all become, in this dumbed down, Orwellian world, one that tells how WE can change the world once more, if we all come together, open our eyes and think! And I've only found it, because of your 'Traditions' photo page, and Mark's words.

All these paths, leading us through the maze of life.

And if you think it's spooky so far, well, just sit down...because this next bit will blow your socks off!

That film, the one above, made me sit there with my mouth open because...and again, this goes back to Bruce, because of his music, Ron Bankley produced that CD of his, and in Ron I have discovered yet another SUPERBLY INTELLIGENT songwriter!

Below are the words that for me, fit that film so perfectly!

They're from Ron's brilliant 'Insurgent Sun' CD, and Ron's friend, Splitting The Sky is narrating the words from 'Anthen For Dissent' You can hear a few tracks from 'Insurgent Sun' here, and 'The Spell' is pretty damn breathtaking too.

Ron Bankley - Myspace

Someone put a blindfold over Ron's eyes, so he can't read this.. ;-) because I'm probably going to embarrass him now, but heck, like Bruce, can this man WRITE songs!!

I HAVE to write these words out for you to read, I just have to for   they will leave you breathless!

ANTHEM FOR DISSENT - by Ron Bankley

United in fear we trade freedom, our prize for the Patriot Act as United we securitize
United in power over patriarchy, we misogynize
United in self-righteous arrogance, we imperialise
United in degenerate genital mutilation, we circumcise
United we consume and spend, and, united, we capitalize
United in greed we exploit, as united we multinationalize
United we commit economic suicide as, united, we globalise
United in beligerent violence, we waste trillions as, united, we militarise
United we massacre millions and think we're so brave, united we fantasize
United we bomb, destroy, maim, mass murder, slaughter and terrorize
United in massive denial we look the other way, as united, we atrocitize
United in 'might makes right', we dominate and, united, we hegmonize
United we pillage the third world and then, united, we moralize
United we covet their resources and, united, we monopolize
United in total denial we deny that, united, we brutalize
United we believe without question the star spangled propaganda our leaders so unceasingly televise
United we, so very obediently, swallow the many fabricated red white and blue lies
United we're so blind, with closed eyes except wide-eyed Ashcroft spies
And in the many resource rich countries that, united, we occupy and we colonize, and united we impoverish and victimize
Yet another corporate billion is pried and yet another heart broken mother cries and yet another star spangled bomb drops
And yet another innocent child heinously dies
Yet another example of united we collateralize
Just U.S. business as usual, as united we privatize
United we stand completely deranged
Global terrorist in our 'freedom and democracy' disguise
As united we stand apathetic and complicit in American terrorism
As united we turn on T.V. to de-sensitise
As united we stand in massive denial
As united we ignore the pleas of the innocent ones we exterminize
As united we stand inanely pledging allegiance to the flag of facist terrorism
As their blood on it dries
As united we stand, surrendering our freedom to the real 'axis of evil' Corporation, CIA, and Military guise
As united we stand with our heads in the sand, as the American Fourth Reich is born
And freedom dies
As united we stand so comfortably numb and deniably dumb
That united we don't have sense to realise
That united we stand on the brink of the New World Order totalitarian police state
United we are so......Blind

And THAT is why I believe that music CAN change the world!

That's just *one* song from this CD, so if you could play something from 'Insurgent Sun' at some point, guys, I'd be really over the moon, because Ron's music should be all over the place too, right alongside Bruce, because these two fellas are something more than a bit special and hell, we need them badly!

actually Lizzie, I didn't write the words to 'Anthem for Dissent'..

I did create the music backdrop... the words were written by a Native lady in the USA who chose to be known as
'Ann Onimous'...it was later recited by longtime Mohawk activist and Attica Prison Rebellion survivor/scapegoat,
Splitting the Sky... who brought it to me for the project.... it has a lot more power and street cred coming from them then a white Canadian dude... it's been posted on the Justice Through Music Project site for awhile now along with many other 'topical' songs and artists...

but thanks anyway for the nod.... I haven't made the no-fly list yet,,,,, but the night is young....

so here's to Woody, Pete, Phil, Tom, Steve...and all the others who keep us engaged...

Hell's Bells, only I could get that part wrong, Ron.   I was so busy checking that I'd got every word correct, that I forgot to double check the author of them......and yes, there it is, on tbe back cover..

"...All songs written by Ron Bankley except, 'Anthem for Dissent' by Ann Onimus, John Boncore and Ron Bankley....."

Sorry! Darn it! (She hides her red face in the blindfold that was supposed to stop Ron from getting embarrassed) :0)

It's an incredible song, sheesh, those words!..and the way you've arranged it works *so* well.

To hear 'Anthem for Dissent' click below, go to 'Songs' then scroll just over half way down, right hand side, and there it is:

Justice Through Music Project (

But you *did* write 'The Spell' which has been playing on my page for weeks now, because I love it so much.   And then there's 'Promised Land' and 'Insurgent Sun' and 'Line' and.....heck I wish I could write words that inspire like yours do. You should put your lyrics up, somewhere, because they sure deserve to be read..

I haven't heard anything since, 2003.

OK he wasn't interested, but he should have replied.

But now...I can't find Bill's! Oh Gawd..I'm hopeless. Just *so* don't get lost with me, then ask me to read the map, because you could be a long time getting home! LOL

I pressed your names at the top, but that just took me to emails..but where is Bill's Blog..? I found yours by pressing your name further down the page...and voila, but I can't see such a link for Bill.

Ooh, you have Tom Chapin on the Guest List. I saw him many moons again, along with dear Harry, of course. Goodness I miss that man's music. And Jez Lowe..you like Jez! He's grand, is Jez. ....AND..Les Barker! Oh that man could make you die laughing..and he's so naughty with what he says, wonderful man...

Don't listen to Ron, Ron.. His music is brilliant!

You *have* to Do Ron, Ron.. ;-)

By the way... the list of guests is very dated.   From the UK scene I've also had the pleasure of interviewing Norma Waterson, Roy Harris, Emily Smith, and there are more but their names escape me at the moment.

Bill and I have our own tastes and it is reflected in our shows. I try to play more music from the UK (much of it I've discovered through Mudcat!) as well as celtic music that I share on my other program, THE SESSION that is heard on Friday's at noon ET.   THE SESSION has been morphing lately as I am incorporating styles such as contra dance as well as country dance music.

Since Ron has kindly put the link to my blog up there I would just add that to see the playlists you go to right side of the page and just click on the yellow paragraph that says it contains the playlists. There is also a link to the Almost Daily Rooster on the right as well--non-music (for the most part) items.

You will also see that I also host Sunday Simcha---if you like Jewish music --be it Klezmer, Ladino, all types of music, or just some great comedy you might enjoy it. Tabletalk is another program which presents my interviews with authors, artists, etc;

My thanks to all for the nice comments about both Ron , Traditions, and the general good will this has generated.

Thanks Bill. I've just plugged in, albeit a little late tonight, but 'Traditions' is on now, over here in England.

Heck, WHAT are these songs I've come into?   Political songs, protest songs, peace songs.

YES!! :-)

Such a *beautiful* song about a man called Harry Stone, very moving, and a true story. Not surprised the tears aren't far away, Ron, each time you hear that one, and yes, I think it will most certainly stand that test of time you were talking about.

Randall Williams - 'I Will Come For You' - Lyrics and Listen

"I will come for you" by Randall Williams

Harry stone was a soldier in the spring of '44,
And harry loved a woman who would never be his wife.
He met her in a restaurant in a quiet town in belgium.
She liked his sweet demeanor, and so she took him home.
The summer months passed quickly in the sweetness of their loving.
It took away their longing, and his memories of the fight.
But with autumn came the orders - the troops were moving onward.
With teary eyes and bitter smiles, he swore that he'd return:

"I will come for you. I will be your husband. we will be a family, and we will share our lives."

Each week he wrote her letters and prayed that he'd hear word -
Of the child she carried and of her life at home.
Fall of '44, he'd gone back to pittsburgh. still he wrote her letters,
But she never did respond.

"I will come for you. I will be your husband. we will be a family, and we will share our lives."

In august '46, he met another woman.
They would raise a family of three daughters in their home.
And he was almost eighty that winter afternoon,
When he heard a soft french voice on the telephone:

"Mr. stone? I'm your daughter. Grandma hid the letters -
And never told my mother that you were still alive.
And mother never told me about the man who is my father.
I never read your letters untill after she had died."

"Can I come to you? can I be your daughter? Can we be a family, and can we share our lives?"

Randall singing 'I Will Come For You' on Youtube

Can you imagine how he felt, so far towards the end of his life, to have found her, at last..

Randall's song is only a sample of the great music coming out of this artist. Check him out at www.thisisrandall.com. His story about how and when he decided to become a musician is a great tale!

Heck, I got my Brombergs muddled with my Brodskys, Ron. :0) No wonder I couldn't find him. I have now though, his song too.

'Our Gods' by Chuck Brodsky

We worship our gods - we buy souvenirs
Admire our trinkets - in front of our mirrors
A hat with a cross - a shirt with a star
The names of our teams - tattooed on our arms

We're given our gods at the moment of birth
The gods of our fathers- all others be cursed
At the earliest age - we memorize verse
The gospel - as it is written

We swear at our gods - curse our rotten luck
From the side of the road - when we self-destruct
We ask them to save us - to get us unstuck
From the muck we get ourselves into

Temples of stained glass - hand cut stones
We build for our gods - such magnificent homes
We visit sometimes - but we don't stay long
Not when the football games are on

We make deals with our gods - to win back what we've lost
In our pants pockets - our fingers are crossed
Lord, give us this day - make these prosperous times
Help us - to cover our crimes

We go to the seers - say, "Show us the script
That our gods have left for us - stashed in some crypt"
"Ah, secrets," they say - "what has never been told...
Yours...for a pile of your gold"

We kill for our gods - we wage holy wars
Assassinate presidents - burn down bookstores
Massacre children to - settle old scores
Yelling, "Our gods are great!"

Our gods must be proud - of the blood on our hands
And the way we go conquering - far away lands
In the names of our gods - may the glory be theirs
Let the spoils & the plunders be ours

We serve our gods - in such humorless ways
Rituals we do - laws we obey
Sometimes in between we pray
But how often do we say "I love you?"

And here's Randall:

And I thought I'd share some information on another Randall Williams who 'turned up' on Google, as he looks a rather interesting character..

Worth posting IMO.

The respect of the world that we now lack,
If you want it back, then vote Barack!
Because this time we come out to vote!

Stop the war!
Stop genocide in Darfur!
No matter what,
Get health care for who have not!
The Foreign Relations Committee,
Can attest to his tenacity,
For homeland and job security.

He stood his ground
When the war was a conception,
Said it was wrong,
So he didn't go along,
Jim Baker and Lee Hamilton
They said of Barack's opinion,
'He's a man of resplendent vision!'

I know the warmongers are anxious, ready and set,
Saddam is who posing to us our really main threat,
They magnified Saddam's offences,
Now we're paying the consequences,
Everyday our soldiers joining the trenches!

Barack! Barack!
He's fighting for openness and honest government!
Barack!
He's doggedly defiant,
Phenomenal strength and wisdom beyond comment!

After you put we in a quagmire!
Not this time!
We come out to vote!

What's at stake?
Clean up Washington overall!
In the wake
Of the Jack Abramoff scandal.
The middle class done elect a man,
It's without representation,
This regime has too much corruption!
He wants to see,
A whole energy policy,
Inclusively,
Extent? Comprehensively:
Renewable fuels to clean coal,
There'll be no price gouging at all,
These things are Barack Obama's goal.

Entrenched in the crooked regime, we must all, take note,
They'll be kicking and screaming at me, so we all must vote!
By not exercising these rights,
It's refusing to see the light,
Democrats! Rise up! Stand up and fight!

Barack! Barack!
On the Senate Affair Committee he's a giant!
Barack!
Dignifiedly resilient,
And with rock star status he's Barack The Magnificent!

You talk about how you won't cut and run,
Rumsfeld and Rove, that's what they done!
But not this time!
We come out to vote!
Not so government work!

As a grad,
From both Columbia and Harvard,
This GI lad,
Want all others to study hard,
We're the wealthiest in less respects,
Without proper health insurance,
Walter Reed Hospital, for instance.
Quality check!
Every wounded soldier should get,
Not abject neglect,
All providers must give a heck!
Health care must be affordable
And easily accessible,
Make existentialism enjoyable!
Without that we could be living in pure misery,
Psychological, mental, even insanity.
Loving husband, father of two,
That is Obama's point of view,
Religiously-urged family value.

Barack! Barack!
Civil rights lawyer who taught constitutional law.
Barack!
Super terrific, I quote,
'Candidate of note!'
So, make sure he gets your vote!

Subpoenaing them gets you no answer!
The Attorney-General can't remember!
Not this time!
We come out to vote!

We know he's young,
But, with the Wisdom of Solomon,
Not like that one!
He has experience, look what he's done!
Insurgents have just one focus:
That's to put a hurting on us.
Worldwide security must be enforced!

Immigration
Could even get further outta hand,
The border plan,
He'll protect in legal fashion,
Undocumenteds would get time,
They'll have to atone for their crime,
Criminals would be kicked out, behind!
Employers who hire illegals and who outsource,
Know it's unconstitutional and time to change course,
Special interests ain't facing facts,
Illiteracy and slavery could last,
Disenfranchisement gone, the time has passed!

Barack! Barack!
The first black President to lead this mighty nation!
Barack!
We'll regain worldwide respect
with Obama's vision and excellent comprehension!

The respect of the world we now lack,
If you want it back, then vote Barack!
Not this time!
We come out to vote!

Now that was a good song..sung by Pete Seeger...and interesting to hear about The Clearwater Project too.

How Are We Going To Save Tomorrow? by Pete Seeger

I wandered by the river's edge one cold and cloudy morn.
I overheard a fisherman singing a sad song.
I asked him, "What's the matter?" He looked up angrily,
Said, "Ain't you ever heard of P. C. B.?"

CHORUS 1:
Throw away that shadnet, get rid of hook and line.
There's no more Hudson fishing, not for a long, long time.
The poison's in the river bed, no matter whose the crime.
But how are we gonna save tomorrow?

The river was looking cleaner, it started to get clear,
We looked forward to the fishing getting better every year.
But now the scientists tell us things are not as they appear.
How are we gonna save tomorrow?

CHORUS

The experts knew about it; so why not you and me?
Who controls the information in this land of the free?
In seventy-two they told us law and order was the key,
How are we gonna save tomorrow?

CHORUS

Here's to the canary that we took down in the mine.
Here's to the Hudson striper, may his warning come in time.
Here's to all the young folks singing, "This land is yours and mine!"
That's how we're gonna save tomorrow.

CHORUS 2:
Don't throw away that shad net; don't junk that hook and line.
We can build a better world; we can start in time.
Clearwater, Clearwater, this land is yours and mine.
And somehow we're gonna save tomorrow.

The longest journey taken needs a first step to begin.
The world wasn't given us to lose, we've got a world to win.
Clearwater says to lend a hand, a paw, a wing, a fin.
All together, we can save tomorrow.

CHORUS 2

Check my blog tomorrow for the entire playlist---access it by clicking on my signature.

As to Pete Seeger--that is a brilliant new album called   At 89 (his age) Amazing---the spirit and the energy.

Townes Van Zandt playing and telling the story behind 'If I Needed You' (a few years back now)

"In dedication to Townes, who awakened my spirit, fed my soul, and flew away with my heart" -- Jeanene Van Zandt
Townes van Zandt - main site

Wow!
Mitch Fambro - Man of Straw

Sloan Wainwright, I've never heard her before, grrrrrreat voice Couldn't find 'In the Summertime' so I've gone for this one..
Sloan Wainwright - Meet Me In The Morning

And yes, we've not had a summer over here in the UK either. We were supposed to have 10 days of rain in one day today, but we've missed it down here in Devon, that's for sure...but I was watching the scenes in New Orleans on TV earlier this evening, and that twit, George Bush reading from a script, telling everyone to take the warnings seriously! Sheesh!! They also showed the clip from the last time New Orleans was hit, when Bush and his cronies left the people to survive, or not, on their own, whilst they flew over New Orleans in the Presidential Jet, on their way back from some fancy charity do somewhere....

Blimey! WHAT has happeened to us all????? We should all be out there marching on the streets....I mean HOW the heck did a man like that and his corrupt Government ever get to be voted in *twice*? Anyway, I hope that everyone is as safe as they can be down there.

Loudon Wainwright III - Needless to Say

I'm so busy ranting that I've lost the thread of where I am now.. :0) Yeesh!

Ah...Beth Neilson Chapman, she was the lady with the lovely voice..

Hey, you have Chris Smither coming to your folk club next year, Ron!

The Hurdy Folk Club

Have you heard his 'Train Home'? Fabulous! I always recall him during the very last Sidmouth International Folk Week, he was included on BBC4's wonderful documentary about the festival. Well, there he was down at Jacob's Ladder beach, which is the beach at the far end of town..and he was sat there, playing his guitar (and that song)..surrounded by scantily clad swim-suited young ladies, one of whom walked right in front of him, then climbed over the wall behind him, but he didn't miss a note or a beat! :0) I was very impressed! lol. Chris Smither - Myspace

Ooh, I like this track, very bluesy...I'm surrounded by cigarette smoke and the smell of beer, who was that? It wasn't Toby Walker
because he was just before...and now I'm out of the bar with the smoke and the beer, and down in New Orleans, sitting on the front porch with a whole pile of beautiful people, listening to them play..
And heck, can they PLAY! :0)

Bennett Harris

And there was Davis and Moses Scarlet and Eden...and I can't find mention of any of them on the internet, which is *so* annoying because their voices are just magic! :0) And Chuck Brodsky is back again, and this superb song called 'Not in my Name' by :John McCutcheon

Not in My Name
Words & music by John McCutcheon

John: vocal, guitar & hammer dulcimer
Jon: harmony vocals, piano & organ
JT: harmony vocals & bass
Pete: electric guitar
Jos: drums
Maura: harmony vocals

You see the plane in the distance
You see the flame in the sky
See the young ones running for cover
See the old ones wondering why
They tell us that the world is a dangerous place
We live in a terrible time
But in Hiroshima, New York or in Baghdad
It's the innocent who die for the crime

Chorus

Not in my name
Not in my name
Not in my name
Not in my name

The witnesses watch through the window
Their hearts locked in horror and pain
At the man lying strapped to a gurney
As the poison is pumped through his veins
And I'm wondering who are the prisoners
Who holds the lock and the key
Who holds the power over life, over death
When will we finally be free? Chorus

Bridge

We stray and we stumble in seeking the truth
And wonder why it's so hard to find
But an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth
Leaves the whole world toothless and blind

Through the ages I have watched all your holy wars
Your jihads, your Crusades
I have been used as inspiration, I've been used as an excuse
For the murder and the misery you've made
I thought I made it clear in the Bible
In the Torah and in the Koran
What is it in my teaching about loving your enemies
That you people don't understand?

Chorus

©2001 John McCutcheon/Appalsongs (ASCAP)

Hey, he wrote Christmas in the Trenches

And Tom, Tom Paxton 'How Beautiful Upon The Mountain' Was that all a dream? The marches, the desire for peace and to change the world? What happened to it?
