Subject: Lyr Req: Verse- daisies/roses bloom
From: curmudgeon
Date: 05 Aug 08 - 04:09 PM

Got a call from a friend who's looking for a song with the line, "When the fields are white with daisies and the roses bloom so fair."

He believes ut to be of Newfoundland origin, possibly a sailor's farewell/return song.

All help appreciated. Thanks - Tom

NB - this is not the Norman Blake song.

WHEN THE FIELDS ARE WHITE WITH DAISIES.
Words, C. M. Denison. Music, W. A. Pratt. (Some sources also list Walter A. Phillips as co-author.)
London: Arthur & Co., ca. 1907.
(I couldn't find any sheet music, lyrics, or sound samples.)

Here's my transcription of the YouTube video, but I can't tell whether it matches the above description:

CHORUS: When the fields are white with daisies and the roses bloom again,
Let the love-light in your heart more brightly burn.
Remember darling only, remember when you're lonely,
When the fields are white with daisies I'll return.

1. I once stood by the harbor as a ship was going out
On a voyage to a port beyond the sea,
And I watched a blue-clad sailor as he said his last farewell
To his lassie who had loved him tenderly.
As they lonely(?) stood together in the moonlight by the shore,
She said, "My aching heart for you will yearn,"
And I heard the sailor promise to his lassie tenderly:
"When the fields are white with daisies, I'll return." CHORUS

2. Once again the sun shone brightly and the fields are white in bloom
Where her girlish heart is aching with the pain,
For I know she heard this morning that the ship her true-love's on
Would never anchor in the harbor safe again.
All alone she weeps so coldly(?) for the one she thinks is dead
When a voice beside her whispers, "I've returned.
God has spared me for the keeping of a promise I once made:
When the fields are white with daisies, I'll return." CHORUS

From the sheet music at The Archive of Popular American Music at UCLA:

WHEN THE FIELDS ARE WHITE WITH DAISIES
Words, James Wells. Music, Walter J. Pond.
New York: Walter J. Pond Music Publisher, 1919.

1. As the golden sun is setting, I am thinking, sweetheart mine,
Of the summer day we parted, and you promised to be mine.
There we pledged our love together as we promised to be true,
And I left you, sweetheart, waiting until I came back to you.

CHORUS: When the fields are white with daisies, sweetheart mine,
In the air the perfume of the jessamine,
'Neath the southern sky so blue,
I am coming back to you,
When the fields are white with daisies, sweetheart mine.

2. Birds were singing in the woodland as we pledged our fond goodbye.
Fleecy cloudlets o'er us floated. Gentle zephyrs seemed to sigh.
Nature's kindly benediction on us that day seemed to smile,
As we parted from each other till the golden afterwhile.

I am not at home at the moment so I cannot give you precise details but I can tell you that this song was recorded for Columbia Records in the UK on a 78rpm single by Ronnie Ronalde. I have compiled several CDs for EMIof Ronnie's music and I am fairly sure that this song was on one of them.

Contact me on paul@pithon.co.uk if you need more details

Good hunting

These are the words to the Sean Dunphy version

I once stood in a harbour, as a ship was going out,
On a voyage unto a port beyond the sea.
I watched the blue-clad sailor, as he bade his last farewell
To the lassie who he loved most tenderly.
I heard the sailor promise to the lassie now in tears,
"When the fields are white with daisies I'll return,

"When the fields are white with daisies, and the roses bloom again,
Let the love light in your heart most brightly burn,
For I love you, sweetheart, only, and remember when you're lonely,
When the fields are white with daisies I'll return."

For the news she heard that morning, that the ship had sailed away,
And would anchor at the harbour ne'er again,
Alone she stood there weeping, for the one she mourned as dead,
When a voice beside her whispered, "Molly dear,
God has spared me for your keeping, and the promise once I made,
When the fields are white with daisies I'll return,

"When the fields are white with daisies and the roses bloom again,
Let the love light in your heart most brightly burn,
For I love you, sweetheart, only, and remember when you're lonely,
When the fields are white with daisies I'll return."
(I'll return)

This song is reported to have been the party-piece of Dan Buckley, who sang it at a farewell party before he set off for America, on board the Titanic. He survived the Titanic, but was ridiculed for dressing in women's clothes (untrue). He joined the American army, and was the last "American" soldier to be killed in battle in France in World War One.
it's worthwhile looking up his history.
