So sorry to hear about Stuart. He was the 'quiet' one of the Taverners, a suberb banjo & guitarist, and also played melodeon & fiddle. He claimed to be the worst singer in England, which was not quite true...there had to be one or two worse than him! [and I should know!]. After the Taverners disbanded Stuart played for several years with the Alan Bell Band. Rest in peace Stuart.

Sad news. A great bunch of singers/musicians the Taverners. Saw em a few times around the late 60's / 70's and still got an LP of theres with a great picture of the lads sat at a bar fronted by the the great Pete Rodger (huge frame and huge voice). If not mistaken, think Alan Bell is the sole survivor of the group now.

R.I.P Stuart.

Very sad news indeed - I've known Stuart on and off for 30+ years and, you're right, he was a very quiet, modest but talented man.
I first saw The Taverners 38(!) years ago and they were, amongst others, instrumental in kindling my love of traditional music.
Condolences to all his family.

Bugger.

A shock for his family, but Alan (Bell) must be feeling terrible, too... first Big Pete, then Brian, now Stuart.

Stuart had that incredible ability to give seamless support without being 'in yer face'.

Sleep well, lad. Everyone will miss you.

As well as playing banjo, mandolin, guitar, melodeon, harmonium and various electronic keyboards with the Taverners over the years, Stuart contributed fiddle (along with any of the above) to the occasional appearances of the Kilgrimol Ceilidh Band and the Fylde Works Band (as in Fylde Guitars). Practices for the latter were usually preceded or followed by snooker sessions with Roger Bucknall. This shared obsession may have led to Roger's subsequent successful foray into cue-making with his Barracuda business. Their friendship also led to Stuart successfully building his own guitar under Roger's guidance - well enough for Roger to allow the Fylde name to go on it.

Like Martin above, it must be about 38 years since I first saw the Taverners. Blackpool Folk Club (and I guess the group) saw its tenth anniversary soon after that, and both were very much in their prime in the early '70s. With Alan, Pete and Brian all well capable of strong solo performances, the powerful sound the band generated was underpinned by Stuart's subtle but strong accompaniments.

Always generous with his time and music, Stuart was a real gentleman of the folk scene. Another good man gone.

Ross

Like many other Local Lads I grew up in a folk scene where the Taverners were "the name", being a Banjo Player Stuart and I would swap ideas, I can recall once instance when I'd installed "Home made" Scruggs Pegs on an old zither banjo, the Tav's and us were playing at The Mecca in Blackpool, we were so involved on playing with the pegs that we ended up missing our cue to go on.

See you "Further up the neck" - enjoy the sessions up there till we all meet up again.

Pete

Very sad news indeed. You were always guaranteed a good night at the Guild (MSG) when the Taverners were on.

Condolences to his family, and may the Great Mother and the All Father comfort them.

So mote it be.
