An old friend used to sing a song that started "When you are in love; it's THE LOVELIEST NIGHT OF THE YEAR. ..." I seem to remember it was sung to the melody of "Blue Danube Waltz," or some other well known waltz. Does anybody know this song and something about it? What are some other waltzes with pretty lyrics that would be fun to sing? WALTZ ACROSS TEXAS and TENNESSEE WALTZ don't do much for me. I do love MOCKIN' BIRD HILL. What do y'all think?

I see that Wolfgang has pointed to the lyrics for the "loveliest night" -- As I remember there was a thread on that awhile ago, and I think we know the tune in the states as SOBRE LAS OLAS / OVER THE WAVES. There's also Bill Monroe's KENTUCKY WALTZ and a whole bunch of other "state" waltzes that have pretty tunes with varying quality words: ie, Colorado, Montana, Arizona, etc.

She-who-must-be-obeyed had a significant birthday last year and talked me into taking her to St Lucia. Different music every night including a couple of instrumental only sessions from local dance band ( guess), [called "Shic Shac" or something similar, led by a youngish bloke on fiddle and the rest were elderly (well, older than me) on tenor banjo, four string guitar as bass, skin drum/tambourine and the oldest, a blind chap with a toothpick permanently attached who did some mean rhythms with a shaker (one of those tubes filled with seeds). They played mostly local tunes in strict dance tempo but always began with the Tennessee Waltz!

THE ASH GROVE in the waltz book or the arrangement by Benjamin Britten. The Waltz Book and the Waltz Book II are great resources for these. There are several with lyrics. Also there are lyrics to Ashokan Farewell.

At a recent session in Berkeley, someone sang one of the sweetest waltzes I've ever heard. I think it's name was WALLFLOWER WALTZ, and the chorus was something close to...

Teach me to walk on air Moving without a care Dance with me if you dare Teach me to waltz

My apologies to the writer if he/she is in eyeshot, please set me straight. Does anyone recognize this little jewel?

If not, I'll talk to some folks who were at the session and see if I can reconstruct it in Mudville. Believe me, it's worth staying tuned for... :)

I agree with Star of the County Down as one of my favorite waltzes, but I also happen to think that the sea shanty Rio Grande is just as beautiful and waltzable.

One of my favorite waltzes has always been SPINNING WHEEL.

Also Ian Tyson does a number of beautiful waltzes on his six Cowboyography albums. I heard somewhere that cows love waltzes and the cowboys used to sing them to calm the animals.

I forgot to mention that one of the prettiest of Ian's cowboy waltzes -- tho' he didn't write it -- is NIGHT RIDER'S LAMENT.

Also Marty Robbins did a lot of cowboy songs with waltz rhythms and great lyrics.

Two things:

One, the waltz Pam mentions is called "Wallflower Waltz." It has no chorus (I should know -- I wrote it). It's on my cassette recording I Am Your Winter Lover," which features traditional and original material.

Two, Richard Thompson's WALTZING'S FOR DREAMERS is a good singable waltz.

Believe it or not, the Chieftains did a lovely version of The Tennessee Waltz, although whoever is singing I do not care for.

I also love 'You Look so Good in Love' by George Strait. And there is one by the Judds-- 'Momma, He's Crazy." I'm not sure if it technically IS a waltz but I believe you can sing it to the 1-2-3 rhythm. At least, I think you can!

Star of the County Down was popularly played as a waltz in the 19th century.

SWEET IS THE MELODY is a lovely waltz by Iris Dement, which you can hear at prairiehome.org

Other waltz tunes I like are:

Midnight On The Water
SOMEWHERE MY LOVE (LARA'S THEME) from Dr. Zhivago
MY FAVORITE THINGS
TUMBALALAIKA
DIE LORELEI
THE ANNIVERSARY SONG (by Al Jolson et al., based on a waltz by Ivanici)
Ah, Mari! (Oe, Mari!)
ROSIN THE BEAU
COME BACK, PADDY REILLY
MOUNTAINS OF MOURNE
TRAMPS AND HAWKERS
UN CANADIEN ERRANT
Rozhinkes Mit Mandlen - Yiddish
FINJAN (or Hafinjan) -- Hebrew
DE COLORES
MY YIDDISHE MOMME
CIELITO LINDO
SCARBOROUGH FAIR
ALWAYS (Irving Berlin)
THE BAND PLAYED ON
Melody Of Love
Norwegian Wood
NOW IS THE HOUR / HAERE RA
SUNRISE, SUNSET
Matchmaker
Goodnight, My Someone

and some we may not think of as waltzes:
DARK AS A DUNGEON
The Star-Spangled Banner
HOME ON THE RANGE
TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME

I believe the Austrian title for the "Over The Waves" (Loveliest Night Of The Year) waltz is "Donauwellen," though the composer (not one of the Strausses) escapes my recollection.

One of my favorites is SWEET BUNCH OF DAISIES which I recorded as a guitar solo for Mel Bay Pub. on American Fiddle Tunes. The lyrics are in the DT somewhere or I can post.

Another good one on American Fiddle Tunes is "Wednesday Night Waltz." I believe Kenny Baker has a version.

"They Were You" (when the moon was young, when the month was May) from the Fantasticks, I believe is in waltz time (but I'm rhythmically challenged so doublecheck). Certainly falls into the 'lovely' category. Course, the competition for "pretty lyrics" is fierce around here, what with Stewball and Rosin the Bow contending.

Patty, I guess I read the thread title differently. I took "Pretty waltzes with lyrics" to mean "pretty melodies that also have lyrics to them." In other words, I was focusing on pretty waltz tunes, not pretty poems set to waltz tunes.

As for Rosin The Bow, there are dozens of songs set to it.

If we're also looking for "pretty lyrics," do they have to be inspirational or romantic poetry for the lyrics to be "pretty?"
(I kinda like "Stewball.")

Other pretty waltz tunes that have nice lyrics are:

MR BOJANGLES

A DAISY A DAY (Jud Strunk)

TRY TO REMEMBER (also from The Fantasticks)

Wish Me A Rainbow

For my money, the old time waltz, that literally sends chills up my spine is the beautiful PARLEZ-MOI D'AMOUR MON AMOUR (Speak To Me Of Love).
I could be wrong, but I think its French-Canadian in origin and the best version I ever heard was recorded by Catherine McKinnon in her Singalong Jubilee days, on an album called "Voice of an Angle"

There's also CAROLINA MOON and "Allegheny Moon."

Shack, I hesitated to mention "Ashokan Farewell," till now, because, while I find it a beautiful waltz, I did not think it had lyrics. But if you check the various forum threads on that tune/song, you'll find both lyrics (2 "authorized" sets of lyrics) and links to audio files.
