THE ASH GROVE in the waltz book or the arrangement by Benjamin Britten. The Waltz Book and the Waltz Book II are great resources for these. There are several with lyrics. Also there are lyrics to Ashokan Farewell.

ASHOKAN FAREWELL (lyrics by Cleo Laine and John Dankworth)
ASHOKAN FAREWELL (lyrics by Grian[?] McGregor)

She-who-must-be-obeyed had a significant birthday last year and talked me into taking her to St Lucia. Different music every night including a couple of instrumental only sessions from local dance band ( guess), [called "Shic Shac" or something similar, led by a youngish bloke on fiddle and the rest were elderly (well, older than me) on tenor banjo, four string guitar as bass, skin drum/tambourine and the oldest, a blind chap with a toothpick permanently attached who did some mean rhythms with a shaker (one of those tubes filled with seeds). They played mostly local tunes in strict dance tempo but always began with the Tennessee Waltz!

A lot of people do THE STAR OF THE COUNTY DOWN as a waltz. Purists may object, but it sure is pretty.

A serious song with thought provoking lyrics and a great tune is BACK-YARD ABORTION WALTZ. I posted the lyrics some time ago, and must do the same with the tune.

Regards
John

Try THE BLUE SKIRT WALTZ. There was a thread on it some time back. Also, check out Cajun music. Lots of waltzes.

I see that Wolfgang has pointed to the lyrics for the "loveliest night" -- As I remember there was a thread on that awhile ago, and I think we know the tune in the states as SOBRE LAS OLAS / OVER THE WAVES. There's also Bill Monroe's KENTUCKY WALTZ and a whole bunch of other "state" waltzes that have pretty tunes with varying quality words: ie, Colorado, Montana, Arizona, etc.

Most song titles in this thread have been converted to links. --JoeClone, 19-Sept-2002.

An old friend used to sing a song that started "When you are in love; it's THE LOVELIEST NIGHT OF THE YEAR. ..." I seem to remember it was sung to the melody of "Blue Danube Waltz," or some other well known waltz. Does anybody know this song and something about it? What are some other waltzes with pretty lyrics that would be fun to sing? WALTZ ACROSS TEXAS and TENNESSEE WALTZ don't do much for me. I do love MOCKIN' BIRD HILL. What do y'all think?
