I was pickin with some friends of mine the other night and a friend origanally from Virgina played an old familiar song id forgotten the words to . I think Norman Blake cut this tune years ago-(hand me down my walkin cane) does anyone know the words. wow Rasta came up with a song outside the relam of the kingston trio the worlds not the same---merember the amalo----Rastaaaa----tanx or thanx

Yes, this is quite a switch since KT did not do this song! But Rasta, you can qualify as an old-timer here at the Mudcat, so you shoulda searched the DT. If I was a mean old man, I would just give you directions on how to find the song. But since you are a fellow KT fan I'll give you the link.

Just don't let this happen again. If you don't know how to search mention that in this thread and I'll post some instructions.

I found it on an old 78 too and have enjoyed performing it ever since, it's one of my favorite jail house laments.

If you like WALKING CANE you will probably also enjoy GOING DOWN THE ROAD FEELING BAD. I know that both of these songs go way back to somewhere in the 30's or 40's.

I seem to recall some version on 78 which started out with an old man singing about "bring me down my walking cane, bring me down my walking cane," then somehting about the fair young maidens/ladies.

Then it segued into Barnuckle Bill the Sailor Man, then back to the slow ploddings of Walking Cane.

Maybe that is just teh sequence I always heard them played?

There is the song that Leon Redbone recorded that I believe was originally a Fats Waller tune, Can't remember it exactly, but the first lie was 'Without my Walkin' Cane, I'd go insane." Need to dust off my Leon Vinyl as the album "On the Tracks" had some really neat tunes such as Lazy Bones, Big Chief Buffalo Nickel, Marie and some other great stuff.

What ever became of Leon Redbone, is he still performing?

Yes, at least I remember hearing about him performing somewhere in the past year; I think he was on PHC. I think he is also doing voice overs on tv commercials, too. I have the first vinyl he ever came out with, almost worn out.

I really enjoy him and also Roy Book Binder; ever hear him sing "Smoke my cigarette"?

The melodious Mr. Cat a Tonic does a song that I think is called "Without My Walking Stick". I would imagine it is the same song that Leon Redbone does as they do similar kinds of material. Mose has recorded it and perhaps Cat a Tonic can remind me on which CD. For those with stream-of-consciousness inclinations, a search of DigiTrad for [walkin' cane] will bring up the one originally requested; [walking cane] brings up a couple more.

You can't search for [walkin* cane] because wildcards only work at the beginning or end of a phrase. For completists, a search for walkin* cane (not a phrase) gets you seven hits.

I have tickets to see Leon Redbone at the fabulous Avalon Theater in Easton, Maryland on Saturday, June 12. Sure hope he's still performing or Marge and I will be sorely disappointed. Marge really likes Leon and he's OK by me. He holds a special niche in our relationship though. The first day we met, Marge spoke to me after my set at an open mic. One of the questions she asked me was did I know "I Want to Be Seduced", a Leon Redbone standard.

I was polite and ignored the unintentional (no, she swears it was unintentional!) double entendre in this question.

I'll let you know in a week or so how Leon is doing.

I'd love to find the words to the Without My Cane song. My dad's using two canadian crutches now, and I think he'd like it. Actually I heard Tom Rosum do it this winter, and it's an Irving Berlin song. Oh, and it is not on DT

Leon certainly appeared to be alive and touring. He was backed up by piano and clarinet. He has injected some comedy routines into his set that I did not particularly care for. The music was good and professionally presented, but the tendency is for all of the songs to sound similar with Leon. I think he played out of the key of C only twice the whole night.

I was not disappointed, but I was not encouraged to go see him again, either.

Thank you for the review. I have never seen Leon live, so if he comes to the Toronto area I will check him out. He lived here for a few years, I believe it was the early seventies, and I recall that he played a lot in the area, but I was a kid at the time and didn't discover his music until about fifteen years ago. I know what you mean about comedy routines, If I wanted comedy, I'd go hear a comedian.
