Our gig last weekend at the tip of Cape Cod survived a hit from Hurricane Hanna.

The wild wind the night before our concert, however, was great!

As usual I was 'outstationed' so saw little of the 'big' names. Stawhead gave their usual superb concert, their first half was all about Napolean, with the second half of 'their greatest hits'. Arthur & the Shellbacks gave a good introduction to what shanties were used for[all in good voice], Scolds Bridle gave a highly enjoyable wander through their years together in song & story. Beware the Fylde Coast's Sands was well rec'd, Rachel's 'Riverdance' song being the'star' turn. The 'Final Singaround' was well attwended with a great cross section of styles etc from Irish pipes to Black Sea Fiddle and everything in between.! Comments heard:- He must be using backing tapes! & I've two choices, throw my guitar in the sea, or go back into the Steamer, and break his fingers! Both about Bruce M.
Overall great atmosphere, and Alan Bell actually remembered to book good weather this year.

Another highpoint - an audience of mostly codheads (Fleetwood locals) screaming for an encore from Bruce Mathiske in The Steamer on Saturday night. You did 'em proud, Bruce!

SHellbacks appeard several times over the weekend. Good responses from the audiences everywhere. Memories of Dave Ryan, good friend to the shells, and Colin Kemp known to all. The steamer session was dedicated to these two with a lot of fond memories

Thanks for the update on intrepid Sailor Ron. It makes a whole lot of sense to me to take a week off if one possible can if one is trying to organize such a wonderful festival, and a week to recover! I know too many people who have literally worked themselves to death doing such work. One can never thank the surviving festival organizers enough.

My first Flyde & I just loved it!

Richard Atkins (MudCatter who sang When all Men Sing BTW) always went to Fylde but hadn't been for 16 years & thought it was time he introduced me to one of the best Northern festivals - forgive me for not having been before, I live in Surrey *grin*

Next time we'll be ticket-holders so I'll feel more a part of the festival than the fringe, but the fringe was good for me as I managed to sing 7 songs in 2 days compared to 3 songs over the whole of Shrewsbury weekend!!

Lovely to meet Insane Beard (many thanks for your kind words, Sirrah) & Rapunzel but chastened to see here (hadn't read it before we set off for Shrewsbury & the Lakes) that there were so many MudCatters there that I didn't meet!!!

I organise MudGathers at quite a few 'Southern' festivals & perhaps next year one could be programmed in for Fylde? They're usually very social occasions & we tend to introduce ourselves, hug, eat chocolate, drink beer, sing & play and occasionally have MudRaffles in aid of MudCat funds. How about it? I'd be happy to run it, all I'd need is a time & venue - perhaps someone could pass this suggestion / offer on?

Either way, I'll get more involved next time & meet more of you hopefully! Keep up the good work & well done to the Fylde Organisers!

My first Fylde (of many, I hope) and loved every minute.

The Askew Sisters were gorgeous in every way. Still got Bryony singing 'The Last of the Great Whales' in my head - had me blubbing like a baby.

We had a great time at Fylde this year and it was good to put names to Mudcat Faces. Was in the audience when Alio was m-ceeing and weelittledrummer performing and Smallpiper playing and had a thoroughly good time.

What a festival and what a treat we had listening to the Askew Sisters and remembering them when they were younger and shyer at Fareham and thinking "The babes have come of age" well done girls the Albert Hall beckons. Mind you that young lad who won the Tallyman Trophy was excellent - I think he has been here before to be playing like that at 12!!!!!

Had a great time at the workshops as well so a big thanks to Stu and Rusty for their time and patience (especially Stu!) Looking forward to next year and yes, we have bought our tickets already!!

My blisters etc were tenderly treated by Karen and Ian at Heaven Scent in the Craft Fair so all in all it was a cracking time - thanks to all again.

Any feedback on what Sailor Ron was up to?

Sailor Ron seemed to be in many places at once MCing, running singarounds, performing with Red Duster and overseeing "Beware the Fylde Coast Sands" - his extravaganza concerning the wrecks and rescues of the Fylde Coast - and probably doing a lot more besides. Last seen at the survivors singaround last night.

Mrs Ron tells me that he now takes a full fortnight off work to prepare/recover - that is the sensible thing to do of course - I am going to try and book the same for myself for next year. Back to the real world yesterday was not such a pleasant experience after such a fantastic festival weekend.

Alan (and fylde festival) has done a lot to help in the restoration and maintenance of the Jacinta - a stern trawler that held (still holds?) the record for most fish caught. During the run up to the Festival it is normal to have a concert on board the old ship

yeh its a great place to go to. I just love the sea front there. And the local people are just terrific. there was this gang of local ladies from kirkham - at the evening concert at the New Boston. they were just so full of fun and laughter, and really whooping it up!

I'm with you there! The Marine Hall might be the brains of the Fylde Festival, but the heart & soul is The Steamer - and thanks to Cliff & Shirley for keeping this going in their first year as incumbents!

My lasting impression of The Fylde Festival 2008 will be Thistle playing into the wee hours to a dozen provocatively clad young ladies (on hen night) dancing wildly to their finely honed renderings of many the old emerald chestnut. Virtuoso stuff, lads! I know was I meant to be comparing, but Rachel & I were playing at 10.30 the following morning, but you didn't seem to be complaining so we sloped off around midnight, wandering off along the Fleetwood docks to the strains of Dirty Old Town echoing through the night.

Another humbling percussion experience on the Sunday morning when Niahm Boadle got her bodhran out; with playing as accomplished, precise and spirited as that in the world we should not fear for the musical future.

Amazing. I won a trophy for singing/writing a song in Lancashire dialect, which seems a bit weird.

I think the weekend confirmed my belief that Richard Bridge is right when he says what I do isn't folkmusic. I am perhaps better leaving this field of endeavour to people who are committed to the tradition. There are few enough opportunities for these folk to play and sing.

Also Denise and I met a load of friendly and pleasant people. and I thank them for their friendship.

The highspots of the weekend for me were giving the workshops on guitar accompaniment and songwriting. I felt on safer ground here. I knew what I was talking about, and I felt really able to help people with practical advice. Also I met a guy who was friends with the late Fred Jordan - someone whose singing I have always greatly admired - even though its nowt like what i do. It was good to hear anecdotes of the great man.

No, not this year but I've been corresponding with Ron about his collection of Merchant Sailor songs and reviewing his CD Blood on the Ice, and my co-editor with the C. Fox Smith Anthology project will also be there with the Shellback Chorus; he'll probably recite a poem or two by our favorite nautical poet.

Great to see so many people both at the Euston and at the Steamer last night.

The Festival has officially started once you've been greeted by Elizabeth Baxter selling programmes from the comfy sofa in the Euston foyer.

Ron's singaround was packed and there was some fantastic singing and great songs - I was particularly moved by Essiquibo River and When All Men Sing (so don't know the names of the chaps who sang each)- the choruses really raised the roof!

It's going to be a great festival - and weather's looking okay today.

Looking forward to Hughie Jones and then Debby Mclatchy today - REMEMBER venue change to the MOUNT. (Apparently the museum didn't get a music licence for the Friday.)

Rachel (Rapunzel) & I (Sedayne) are playing in The Bernard Wrigley concert tomorrow night at The Euston...

On Saturday we're part of the Wyre Light Orchestra for the Wrecks & Rescues show at The Mount, before opening The Big Sing, also in The Mount. And on Saturday night (for my sins) you might catch me in the Deep End comparing at The Steamer...

On Sunday Morning, assuming I've survived, we'll be back at The Steamer where we'll be opening In the Tradition with a suitably subdued set of Supernatural Balladry & Songs of Ceremony.

Also, I'll be storytelling in The Marine Hall Gardens on Saturday (1pm) & Sunday (1 & 3.30pm) - weather permitting - but there's lots of cover so it shouldn't be too much of problem.

Hope to see you around & please do say hello, and anyone who already knows me, please remember the difficulty I have recognising faces!

We've put up a Myspace page at Venereum Arvum, which is the name we generally perform under, but at Fylde it's Sedayne & Rachel McCarron - page 33 of your souvenir programme. We were onto around 500 hits yesterday, but it was only 22 the last time I looked! Where have they all one??

Indeed, and if the Threlfalls are there this year we'll have the finest singers in the English tradition. However, as far as sessions devoted purely to English songs and music, no, and that was what was asked about.

If concerts had been the question, then Strawhead are about as purely English as any, but I didn't think that was the point.

Fylde is usually pretty thin on specifically Scottish music, although isn't the Emily Smith band here this year (hurray)? Being just across the water, there is always a fairly strong Irish influence on the locals, and always some attempt to get visitors from the other side of the Pond. But the purer forms of English folk song and music: no, I don't recall any emphasis on such, at least beyond a fairly strong Lancashire component. Unless what Ron sings is in English.

The Marine Hall may be the official HQ for Fylde, but the Steamer always seems to be the hub of things for us.

There's constantly great stuff going on there, and being part of the 'Fringe' it pulls in a lot of locals and passers by who otherwise wouldn't be involved with the festival. Alan Bell is to be commended for continuing to put on great acts at the non-paying venues and allowing those unable to commit to weekend tickets (for whatever reason) to really get a lot out of the festival.

We're all over the place this year, but you can bet when there's 'downtime' you'll find us in the Steamer.

Phil Brown from The Drift, Radio Lancs is broadcasting live from Fylde on Friday evening. A chance for those who can't make it to catch the flavour. Phil is a good friend to folk music in the North West, and presents one of the best folk programmes IMO in the country.

My performance times for Fylde are as follows:-
Saturday
11-12.30 am Milton Street Youth and Community Centre. I am conducting a seminar entitled Songs For Guitar. It wasn't quite what I thought I was doing but - fair enough! I'm not really too hung up about the guitar - if anyone wants to talk about songs and anything else - I'm cool with that. if nobody turns up - I'll talk to myself - songs, guitars, the meaning of life - an inner monologue!

Then I run across town to The Steamer, because I have to take part in the STEAMER MUSIC SESSION running from 12.00- 5pm. My old mate Pete skinner along withhis accomplice form Penny black will be there. its MC'd by Pete Rimmer - also featured is 4Square, Anna Shannon, Joe Topping., and Johnny Jump Up. sounds good!

7.30 that night sees me at The Boston Song Party at the NEW BOSTON HOTEL the Compere is Ali O'Brien. other guests are Strawhead, Viki Swan and Johnny Dyer, The Askew Sisters, and presumably top of the bill Jez Lowe and The Bad Pennies.

Positively you last chance to caych what i do is 10.30 Sunday morning whne I seem to be part of a coven called The songwriters - hosted by Matt Amour, also feauring Anna Shannon, Paul D. Wrigley, and Dave Walmsley.


its very unusual for me to be invited to appear at a folk festival and I am fully sensible of the honour being conferred by Alan Bell and his committee. I hope I don't disappoint.

Erudite and wry, Alan Whittle's been a folk circuit irregular and all-round song-writing chancer for more than a quarter of a century.



A great example of self employed survivalism, he once had a massive Euro hit with a football song, has a lyric in the Oxford Book of Villains, played at the Wembley Country Music Festival, and has had a song featured on The Pentagon website.



On this career-spanning 20-tracker, it's the breadth of his unassuming craftsmanship that's truly impressive. The gentle and tender 'Haiku Song' comes directly after the cruelly blunt murder ballad 'George Joseph Smith'. Tales of personal history such as 'Grammar School Puppy Dog' and 'Swimming Pool' stand alongside cod-Americana country toons ('The Telephone Song' and the unquestioning flag-saluting patriotism of 'There Is A Land Called America'). The mercilessly satirical "Well Done Liz!" is a world away from 'Trish', a self-deprecating song of spurned love set against a backdrop of the fall of Communism. On the latter, the distinctive drumming of Mick Bedford (Chumbawamba) perfectly complements Al's effortlessly artful guitaring



Firmly folk-rooted in blues and music hall rather than finger-in-yer-ear nasalism, Al casually slips from the Max Miller-ish blatant bawdiness of 'Big Red Sausage' to the masterly fingerpicked 'Tribute To Dink'. There are classy interpretations here too – of Roger Brooks' wonderful 'Apartment Song' and of two early blues songs, 'Winding Boy' (Jelly Roll Morton) and 'Pretty Boy' (Tony Jackson).



Oh, and Al's lyrics are great. My favourite: 'Well done Liz! You're the queen that's what you is; not just some arsehole, you've got a castle. Well done, Liz1'

Just looked at the Whitby Golden Egg thread. Average price for real ale in Fleetwood [for Fylde] is around £2.40-£2.50 a pint. But there again we're not Tykes!

Dry - it's sandy, so drains well. Don't forget pegs when you pitch tents - the sandy soil doesn't grip pegs well. Long pegs or cross pegging

WLD - can't remember it was up last year, but John Ditchfield now has a big glass sculpture outside his studio (on the corner by the big traffic light junction) which is lit up at night and changes colour in the most mesmerising way (- cue cars beeping their horns when the lights go green and you're just sat there watching it...) Be sure to drive past after dark to check it out.

Yes I love Fleetwood too, which is why, after being away for some considerable time, I've moved back this year. Not just for the great festival on my doorstep...

I love Fleetwood. Great big well set Victorian houses looking out to sae. A long flat front - so great if you're a wheelchair pusher! the concert hall is also disabled friendly.

When the weather is kind - the dancers have this fabulous greensward overlooking the sea. there are ferries and othe big boats sailing past.   great chip shops, and Chinese restaurants. A craft fair in a big separate sportshall - but with a great music shops as part of it and a Fylde guitar stall.

Loads of events you can drop in and out of. Always a great mix of guests and what must be some of the best local talent in the country.

If you can go and see the freeport shopping centre -its just a regular shopping mall, but set round a Marina - you can take a break from shopping drinking your coffee, looking out to sea.

theres always some yachts for sale and they do look a bargain - but so far I've never had to sail home.

Also try and squeeze in a visit to see local artist genius John ditchfield whose glass creations are always cropping up on bargain Hunt!

with historic Blackpool down the road - what more could you want?

Weelittle drummer, I presume you mean the ferry to Larne in N.Ireland, yes you can take a car, in fact to travel on board you have to take a car. The Knott End ferry across the Wyre is just for 'people', though I believe you can take a bike!.

I am confident the weather will be good this year (riding for a fall?), Small problem tho we bought tickets ages ago, & now find my wife's NW side are dancing ( & i've been roped in to help(or hinder) the music, so i'll have to do some refund negotiation upon arrival. I'm hoping that there will be some good tune & songs sessions in the bar this year, seem's to have been lacking in recent years. Mind with Cross o'the Hands being there i might be lucky.

I will be singing at Fylde with Sedayne. Although not listed in the line-up above(I think it was done awhile back), Sedayne is booked to do storytelling and music, and rumoured to be MC-ing too.

I grew up with this festival, Fleetwood being my home town. It'll be odd this year to be part of it as an artist and not just as a spectator.

The line-up looks good - I'm particularly looking forward to seeing Debby McLatchy again.
