On most longer threads there seems to be a point of honour to be the 100th post, even if there is no comment with it.

On my computer, there is no numbering of the posts, so I imagine the competitors have to count them up.

I just wondered why you do it? And why 100? And is it the same on other forums? And do competitors check other counts?

No agression intended, just elucidation requested.

No, Gurney, the number of posts in each thread is clearly indicated on my computer, and probably on most people's computers, so you don't have to count up the posts. 100 is a natural number for people to note as a symbolic crossing point, as is each succeeding 100 thereafter.

Why 100? Because most of us humans have ten fingers, so we work on a base of 10; and 10 times ten has some sort of mystical meaning for us.

Now if we were cartoon characters with only four fingers on each hand, life would be completely different for us. 100 would still be ten times ten, but it would be a much smaller number.

Claiming credit for post #100 may be a "tradition," but isn't it a very recent tradition?

I had been frequenting Mudcat for YEARS before the first time I noticed this phenomenon. I think it may have begun during my post-Katrina absense (Aug '05 - spring '06). If I'm wrong, so be it ~ but I find it hard to believe I would have failed to notice this game if it had really been going on all along.

I have noticed the "Messages" column on the list-of-threads page, but the few times I've checked, it wasn't accurate. On several occasions when the number of messages was shown as "1," I've opened the thread to find two posts, and maybe more than than once or twice. Is the number on display the number of responses, not counting the original post? Maybe the counting function for each newly created thread performs inconsistently at first, takes a while to "shake down," and later becomes reliable well before the magic number is reached.

I have no interest in participating in this activity and think it's kinda stupid, but it's certainly harmless and I don't begrudge anyone their enjoyment, such as it is. At least, it only interrupts these earthshakingly serious discussions very briefly.

Joe, I feel constrained to point out that the average human bean has less than ten fingers, and less than four limbs, statistically. I like to think that the average 'catter is well beyond counting on his/her digits.

Actually Daddy Chompers it started a long tome ago........Do you remember before the upgrade when there were no numbers down the right column and no way to split the pages? Max made a major change back then (2002???) to accomodate those whose ISP or puter was too slow to load the big threads. Before then, 100 was a sort of "magic number" after which it became very hard to for those lesser equipped to keep track so we'd start a "Part 2" or 3 or 4 as needed. Remember those days? Here's an example from May of '99 that was easy for me to remember (not that I want to)........Those threads I think went to 5 parts with over 500 postings.

Maybe the best example was the 9/11 threads which we changed every 100 posts and went on for several weeks. In any case, the magic 100 was being used some then just to note it was about time to link in a new thread. After the upgrade the magic 100 was still in our minds and I think it just fell into the game category. I recall at one point it got so serious folks were accusing the Clones of changing posts so they could get the 100 !!!

And we all know no clone would do that.........Joe might though!

I may not have even been here before the upgrade you're talking about. I guess this is just something I failed to notice until relatively recently.

Maybe it's become more popular and much more frequent?

Or maybe, when I first became a more-or-less regular, it had only recently become less necessary to mark #100, so that the practice might have fallen out of common use for a while?

I really doubt that I could possibly be getting more perceptive in my old age. The opposite is much more likely...

Pedant alert!

Palaeoontologists might say we've got 5 digits on each of the four limbs and the palaeoanthropologists reckon we've inherited the opposability of one of them (on each of the anterior limbs) from our primate ancestors, many of whom had (along with some of our extant "cousins") an opposable digit on each posterior limb as well. I don't recall it being distinguished by a name separating it from its mates, though. Curious.

However, the only enumeration I have is on the index page, and I'll point out that I wrote my last post (some might wish) in answer to Uncle DaveO's, and by the time I submitted it, there were three posts between them.

So once again, does anyone check the count? Surely a job for 'terminally stupid and bored assholes,' and an opportunity to berate false claimants.

Di I check the count? Yeah......If I'm playin' the game and notice the thread reaching 100 I pull up the same thread in a separate window and type in the !)) in the box, all ready to go. Then I check the thread until the 99 posts and immediately hit the submit for the 100. Sometimes I put up two windows witha 99th post of virtually nothing in it and the 100 post. Then I post something as 98 and and as soon as it hits I click 99 and 100.

Like I said, perpetually bored stupid asshole.
