Subject: Lyr Req: Bawdy verses Rollicking Randy Dandy O? From: Barry Finn Date: 15 Aug 08 - 02:43 PM Below are the standard verses (Hugill) to Rollicking (Galloping) Randy Dandy O, also in the DT. What I'm looking for are the non camouflaged versions or verses (& chorus) of this song (Hugill & Colcord) Charlie Noble gives a few verses collected from Vance Randolf In This Thread Anyone got any thing they can add to these????? Rollicking Randy Dandy O Now we are ready to head for the Horn Way Hey Roll and go! Our boots and our clothes, boys, are all in the pawn To me rollicking randy dandy, oh! Heave a pawl, heave away, The anchor's on board and the cable's all stored Come breast the bar, bullies and heave her away Soon we'll be rolling her 'way down the bay. Soon we'll be warping her out through the locks Where the pretty young girls all come down in flocks. Sing goodbye to Sally and goodbye to Sue For we are the bullies that can kick her through. Oh man the stout capst'n and heave with a will Soon we'll be driving her 'way down the hill. Heave away, bullies, you parish-rigged bums Take your hands from your pockets and don't suck your thumbs. Roust 'er up, bullies, the wind's drawing free Let's get the rags up and drive 'er to sea. We're outward bound for Vallipo Bay Get crackin' m'lads, 'tis a Hell of a way. Vance Randolf's verses & version as posted by Charlie As I was a rambling along the street, With a ri-o, ri-o, randy-o! Two gallopin' whores I chanced for to meet, With a gallopin' roar an' dandy-o! One she was so very fair… She called me a stud an' I called her a mare… The other she had such beautiful locks… She gave me the clap an' I gave her the pox… Thanks all Barry |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Bawdy verses Rollicking Randy Dandy O? From: GUEST,Lighter Date: 15 Aug 08 - 11:19 PM Rumor has it that when they didn't feel like singing "Galloping" they sang "Ballocky." One of the worst things you could sing out in, say, 1922. Wish I could add more beyond my feeling that "don't suck your thumbs" is probably euphemized from "pull out your thumbs" (At least "Pull your thumb out" is a recognized cliche'.) Hugill says that only "two or three" of his verses "have had to be altered slightly," so he wasn't obviously thinking of Randolph's version. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Bawdy verses Rollicking Randy Dandy O? From: GUEST,Bob Coltman Date: 16 Aug 08 - 05:34 AM I have the following, which I found in "Sea Songs and Ditties from the Store of Dave E. Jones," a 1928 chapbook. I think the original is at http://www.immortalia.com I see I noted down that I adapted the lines slightly, but I no longer remember exactly which or how. So you'd better check the immortalia version to see the original. WARNING TO READERS: X-RATED LANGUAGE AHEAD, PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK. TOPSAIL HALYARD CHANTY As I went through the clover fields, Hi, randy dandy O, I saw two whores kick up their heels, Galloping randy dandy O. One named Sal, the other named Sue ... Said I to Sue, I'll sock it to you ... I laid her down behind a stump And made her ass go bumpity bump A week went by and all was well And then my prick began to swell Then to the doctor I did go My prick and ballocks for to show Young man, said he, you're in a fix You'll lose your life or half your prick I thought ten inches I could lose If the other twelve he would excuse He laid it out upon a block And lopped ten inches off my cock So now I'm cured and well again, Bring on your whores, I'll screw them then |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Bawdy verses Rollicking Randy Dandy O? From: Barry Finn Date: 16 Aug 08 - 10:04 PM Well I did ask for "Bawdy", I just don't know where I could sing them unless my wife ships me out. Thanks Bob, glad you put a warning on that. Barry |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Bawdy verses Rollicking Randy Dandy O? From: Lighter Date: 16 Aug 08 - 10:34 PM The "Dave E. Jones" booklet makes a reference to "Barnacle [sic] Bill the Sailor." Since the bowdlerized recording didn't appear till Dec., 1928, the date of the booklet must be later than that. Since one of the songs is about the naval auxiliary aircraft tender USS Teal, "Dave" may have served in that ship - which was based in Norfolk, Va., in the early 1930s, according to Wikipedia. |
