Subject: Ireland - help me please!
From: GUEST,Texas Guest

Well, folks, this isn't life or death here, I have exhausted my internet resources and am still empty-handed, so help is needed to locate some lyrics.

Situation: A friend of my visited Ireland a decade ago and brought back a CD from the town of Castlebar that was recorded at Bucko's Bar on Linenhall Street. It is a compilation disc and there's some nice stuff on it; there is one song, however, that I've wanted to learn but the CD comes with no lyrics and I cannot quite make out some of the words that the singer is singing on the recording.

The name of the song on the CD is, "Trapper And The Traveller," and the guy who sings it is, Jo Bange. I have gone through the DT here and found nothing on either the song or the singer; and, "Googling" it has rendered nothing of substance. Is there anyone out there who is familiar with this song and can you provide the lyrics; or, do you know Jo Bange and is he accessible for me to get the lyrics from him? Any help would be appreciated. Cheers.

Found the difficulty maybe:

A number of local singers and musicians, collectively known as Jo Bange, and who were recorded recently in Mannion's bar in Balla, will be featured on the popular RTE Ceili House programme on Saturday night, 16th April, between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m.

I would return to the sites you found and then search for the vocalists on that recording and try asking them.

Well, thanks folks. I don't really have any site that rendered anything of use other than the name of the bar in Castlebar and also the one in Balla. My only thought, other than trying Mudcat would be to simply ring-up the bars and hope that who ever answered the phone would take me serious, and then, be able to set me off in the right direction. I guess if it comes to that, why - I'll do it. Thanks again. Cheers.

Texas guest, did you notice on this website, there is a telephone number at the bottom of the page? Perhaps they could offer you some leads.

Also, this info might be helpful.

On a Sunday afternoon in November 1999, 18 musicians and singers born or based in Castlebar, gathered together in Bucko's Bar, Linenhall St., Castlebar to record a collection of songs and tunes on an album entitled 'Castlebar - Live and Alive'
All proceeds of the sale of the CD go to 'The Friends of the Sacred Heart Hospital' Castlebar. It is hoped that the sale of the album will realise in the region of £8,000 for the Hospital.

Contact mbaynes@anu.ie for order / further details

Good luck! I hope this helps.

KT
