You should definatly check out Wheeler Street, they've had an amazing summer. I saw them at Cambridge Folk Fest in the Club Tent I don't think I've ever seen that tent rock like that...what a band!

James Findlay, outstanding young fiddle / guitar player who also sings everything from modern writing to the big English ballads. Excellent role model. He is in Dorchester.

Drinking springs to mind for Deirdre LOL :-) I heard she did a very good job at the booking office for The Gate To Southwell Folk Festival.

Liam Robinson has a very special skill when it comes to working with children. I booked Liam for my autistic daughters birthday about 4 years ago. I sat there and was mesmerised by the natural way he worked with the children.
I also booked him last year to go into a special needs school and a primary school in Faldingworth. The reviews were excellent from both schools.

Pete Coe is also a natural when working with children.

Deirdre, thanks for the offer of help.....I'm sure we can find something for you to that doesn't involve kids or teaching and is in keeping with your (slightly) more mature years. Paul Young is on my list of people to talk to. I don't know Liam, any idea where I can get hold of him?

I love the Demon Barbers - their new show with a mixture of breakdance, hiphop, garage and trad folk dance / music just takes your breath away.

Depending on the actual date, I'd be willing to assist even though I'm not young, I hate kids and have no skills to teach them!.

Another good contact for you would be Liam Robinson - folk song & dance - goes under the name of Mini Morris cos he's about 7 foot 20 inches tall!. And don't forget Paul Young (ex Gainsborough).

With a grant, you could get the Demon Barber Road Show in at the school. Well worth it and they put a show on at the end of the week involving the school(s).

Hi Charlotte,

We're up in North Yorks, I'm guessing (given your handle) that you're in Kent?

4 square are certainly a possibility, I haven't seen/ heard Wheeler St, I'll try and find something by them.

Hadn't considered dance, but could make a good workshop for the afternoon. Kids at the local school learned some Ceilidh dances at the end of last term.

Shooting roots is a good idea I'll follow that up.

there are some great young acts out there:

4square, wheeler street etc etc

my younger sister who is 16 teaches folk dance (all kinds from maypole to border and cotswold) to younger children in kent. She is always very eager in getting involved with this sort of thing.

I might also be able to help?

I am sure shooting roots (contactable by the efdss site) might be able to help you too....them being young and all that...

I'm just looking for thoughts and ideas really. We are thinking of pulling together a "Young Folk" day in July next year with aim of getting some of the local kids/ youths involved in traditional (and other folk) music.

Part of this would be performance by a couple of excellent "young" bands/ acts....traditional (but could be funked/ rocked up)or trad sounding. I've got a couple of ideas who I would like to approach but any others would be welcome.

We're also talking to the local school about running a trad tune & song competition, probably with 2 age groups (up to 12 & 12 plus), part of the prize would be to "perform" at the evening gig on the bill with the bands mentioned above. Has anyone got any experience they can share of doing this type of thing?

We would also be looking at at running some workshops for the youngsters on the Saturday afternoon before the gig in the evening. Looking for ideas and volunteers to help with is.

Any thoughts/ ideas welcome.
