And he is at the Sunray Folk Club in Feb 2013....

He was, indeed, quite brilliant last night - pity that, in spite of lots of publicity, there wasn't a large audience. Without doing any very well-known songs, he managed to please everyone by the range of material he does, and every one of them so well. As well as breath-taking guitar work, he has a good voice, and can compete (if he wants to) with Mick Ryan on breath control! And it all seems so effortless - that's professionalism at its best of course.

Why don't more club organisers book him?

Barbara

He is a friend of mine, and has supported the Sunray Folk Club, as well as covering "I hate the Rain" by Bob Kirkpatrick.

Go see him- you won't be disappointed.

So would I. They were the best act I ever saw in a folk club. Nice blokes too.

An evening with Paul is always good value. Much as I admire Steve Knightley as a songwriter and singer, I'd choose a Downes & Beer gig over a Show of Hands gig any day.

Anybody who disagrees should take in his version of the Jackson Browne song - Call It a Loan. It is surely as near perfection as any guitar accompaniment ever devised by anybody - almost a reinvention of the song.

If they ever give Olympic Gold medals for guitar playing, Paul should be on that podium getting one.

Paul Downes, in my opinion, is the best guitar accompanist working in England at the moment. I'd love to see him play again.

Anyone visiting N. Devon this weekend would find a warm welcome at the Shammick Acoustic Sessions concert in Combe Martin, where our guest is the superb guitarist and interpreter of songs, Paul Downes. Ex-playing partner of Phil Beer of Show of Hands (and still occasionally gigging with him, ex-member of Arizona Smoke Revue of blessed memory, present member of the Joyce Gang, and new accompanist to Mick Ryan (superb first CD of those two on Wildgoose records!), he'll undoubtedly give us a great evening.

If you want more information, please PM me, or go to the website here
