Subject: 'In the Light of the Burning Trees' From: TonyK Date: 24 Aug 08 - 11:53 AM I'm looking for a recording of this. I used to sing it years ago and don't remember how it goes. I found the lyrics in a post here from '03 but that poster was also looking for the author and a recording. Seems to me it was a female trio, but I don't see it on Herdman, Hills and Mangsen. It's a lovely song and I'd like to sing it again. |

Subject: Lyr Add: THE BURNING TREE (Elmer Beal) From: GUEST,Bernie Date: 25 Aug 08 - 08:50 PM "The Burning Tree" [Elmer Beal JR] The summer has gone, and the day's growing cold Far away honk some geese in their flight Here down below, we start thinking of snow And the quiet of long winter nights But even though times may get harder And the darkness can make you feel old There's a good harvest stored in the larder And the trees are aflame now, in red, green, and gold Too many times when I'm driving, I'm blind Swept along thinking I've got to be First in the line, 'till my teeth start to grind Like the cobblestones down by the sea But yesterday morning at sunrise where the highway dips down by the sea The fire of dawn was reflected In the leaves of a tree that was beckoning to me CH: And I run through the leaves in the cool autumn breeze Feeling warmed by the fire in me Though it's said[sad?] they don't talk, I still learn a lot In the light of the burning trees There on the ground, I heard a voice with no sound Saying "this is your reason to be" To seek your own place in this whole human race And to find it will set your heart free But even though times will get harder And the darkness will make you feel old There's a good harvest stored in the larder And the wisdom you hear in the trees is your soul NOTE: There may be small glitches, but I think it's about 98 percent correct....[learned many years ago from a recording by Elmer's fine group, Different Shoes]...if you can find this LP, on the old Fretless label, it's a gem... |
Subject: RE: 'In the Light of the Burning Trees' From: TonyK Date: 25 Aug 08 - 09:14 PM Sorry about your house, open mike. That is sad indeed. Bernie, I have the lyrics, thank you. I found a Different Shoes LP and I love it but it's not the right one. Elmer Beal has 3 really well written songs on it, though, including 'Tied to the Land'. If anyone else has recorded 'In the Light of the Burning Trees' I'd love to find a copy. I remember how the chorus goes, but not the verses. Tony |
Subject: RE: 'In the Light of the Burning Trees' From: GUEST,Bernie Date: 26 Aug 08 - 06:38 PM The LP is titled "One size feets all"...Fretless was distributed by Rounder,if that's any help...good luck... |

Subject: RE: 'In the Light of the Burning Trees' From: GUEST,Guest (Kathy) Date: 16 Jul 18 - 01:10 PM If anyone is still looking ... Mara Levine recorded this song on her 2012 CD 'Jewels and Harmony'. Jewels and Harmony |
Subject: RE: 'In the Light of the Burning Trees' From: leeneia Date: 17 Jul 18 - 11:15 AM When I saw this thread title, I too thought of forest fires. So if I wanted to sing this song, I would folk-process it and change burning trees to turning trees. Make it clear it's about beautiful autumn colors, not a fiery disaster. |
