I can recommend the ' in house ' breakfasts and the butties (home made bread with substantial fillings - freshly made each day)

Sorry GP no music sessions, but the singing is mighty fine and has been known to go on until six o'clock the next morning, and you can sit in the field and play.

Since Hull Sea Fever this year follows on the week-end after we should be able to make it!!!

Will our camper-van be able to negotiate the entrance?
Dimensions: Height        9' 6" (290 cm)        Weight        3 tons
                   Width        7' 5" (227 cm)
                   Length    23'      (699 cm)

Are "snow-chains" needed or is there tractor power to extricate us from any water-logged fields?

Bob

You should be OK Bob, we have tended to stay at the top of the field and have had no problems getting on or off with our caravan even when the ground is a bit soggy.

You'll have a great time, we're missing it 'cos it coincides with the Wail.

Have a good one!

John

Last year when this was advertised on mudcat locals were annoyed that 'outsiders' were given the heads-up concerning this event.
it is a good week end but a little insular

Not in the least bit 'insular'. Everyone is made very welcome.

However, there was an occasion in the past where advertising to a wider audience resulted in the event being attended by people more interested in the cheap beer than in the music - causing problems for an already hardworking family.

Had the event been so insular it would never have survived for over 25 years.

No argument about the hard working family running it!
They deserve medals for the time they put in. Not just on the day but the weeks beforehand bread/bun making & arranging/testing beer deliveries.

To all veterans of the Bender.
Anyone remember between 1992 - 1995, three lads (and accompanying lunatics) who sang songs about lizards, camping on the moors near ugthorpe a and song about the Bender. One on guitar, one on a banjo and another singing?

THEY ARE COMING BACK Sept 2009!!!!

Won't make it myself - maybe one year:-)

Out of interest though when you say 'no music sessions' are you just excluding the 'session' type thing where everyone gets around and plays the same tune? If it is 'singers only' does that mean only unaccompanied singing or do you allow self accompaniment or duo's / trio's etc which some instrumentation. I, for instance, do a few unaccompanied, a couple accompanying myslef on concertina, a couple of tunes on concertina and even the odd song where I have been known to pick up a guitar.

I am always a bit puzzled by this and maybe some other people are as daft as me!

Cheers

DeG

Out of interest though when you say 'no music sessions'...

The basis of the weekend is a series of singarounds. While solo unaccompanied singing is the most common, there is also self accompanied singing, singing by small groups (accompanied and a capella) and occasionally a couple of tunes instead of singing a song, so nothing is excluded.

There are no organised tune sessions, though a few of us did manage some informal tune sessions between the scheduled events.

They are great weekends with a very friendly atmosphere while at the same time raising thousands of pounds (literally) for two local hospices.

Thanks, Tootler - I understand it now. I guess it is pretty much like a 'singers night' as opposed to a 'session'.

Cheers

Yes, I remember the 3 lads from Middlesbrough. Loppy Head Off time was a great song. Hopefully the lad who shouted all the way through the session will be on better form if he's coming with you.
