Subject: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Les in Chorlton Date: 26 Aug 08 - 03:13 AM Well, it's looking good for the first Wednesday in September which I calculate is the 3rd. I understand from the Landlady that the famous "Beech Light Show" will probably be available to add visual to our audio performances! How many folk sessions can boast (?) a light show? Book a coach now! The Beech, Beech Road, Chorlton, Manchester. Details on the Folk Map Cheers Les |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Rapunzel Date: 26 Aug 08 - 03:44 AM See you there Les - should we bring a torch? |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Jack Blandiver Date: 26 Aug 08 - 04:06 AM Candles & incense & lots of cake! And I will be doing Child #38, AKA The Wee (Wee) Man, be the beast in attendance or no... Is Spleen back on the scene yet? It's been a damp sort of summer without him... |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Les in Chorlton Date: 26 Aug 08 - 06:20 AM Rachel, a torch might be useful but the added tension of the candle fire hazzard should be considered. Sean, not quite sure about Spleen .............. I'm having a bad back and need to take more drugs. Cheers L in C |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: GUEST,Alan G at work Date: 26 Aug 08 - 10:40 AM Should I come in my wellingtons in case the wee man (the four legged one in the pub rather than the one in the ballad) decides to try to pee up my leg again? If you can't wait until a week on Wednesday for the Beech, there's always this Wednesday at the Saracen's Head Warburton - but I won't mention that in case it's seen as link hyjacking. |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Les in Chorlton Date: 26 Aug 08 - 11:01 AM Alan, wellington's are a fine and wonderful thing and have been seen in the Beech on many occasions, although generally associated with work and allotments. I think people might expect you to sing only sea shanties so perhaps take a chance with some thing more seasonal. I really intend to get to the Saracen's but am currently stumbling about and grumbling about my dodgy back. I have a fine collection of drugs to experiment with so I cannot make the Saracen's this week. I feel I need advice on the meaning of the phrase "Avoid alcohol". I feel their must be a technical get out from a direct prohibition. What do you think? As for "link hyjacking" seems like an excellent idea - we should all spread our cells / singarounds as far as we can. Cheers Les the back, Chorlton |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: 8_Pints Date: 27 Aug 08 - 08:28 AM Alan G, Perhaps sandals would be more seasonal and also have the advantage that should the worst occur, drainage of superfluous liquids will be much more efficient! Bob |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: John J Date: 27 Aug 08 - 08:51 AM Just about recovered from the excesses of Shrewsbury, will be at the Saracen's Head for a sing this evening (Wednesday) and also the Beech next Wednesday. JJ |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Jack Blandiver Date: 28 Aug 08 - 07:52 AM We loved the Saracen's Head last time; hope to get back soon! See you all next Wednesday at The Beech - all you Saracen Snuggers included, I hope... Talking of Saracen's Head in a vaguely folkish & very much a Cheshire context, here's a Saracen's Head Green Man from the cloister of Chester Cathedral. A foliate Osama?? |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Les in Chorlton Date: 28 Aug 08 - 08:21 AM Looks like Brian Blessed to me |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Les in Chorlton Date: 28 Aug 08 - 08:36 AM Sean how do you attach a photo to a link like that? L in C |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Jack Blandiver Date: 28 Aug 08 - 09:10 AM That photo is on my website, so I just did the HTML for the clicky then inserted the image URL between the quotation marks and the link text between the pointy brackets. Any picture you upload onto your Myspace page can be done like this too (the long image URL you get simply by right-clicking on the image and pressing Copy Image Location) such as: Forman's Hut A fine picture by the way. What is it with old huts? |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: John Routledge Date: 28 Aug 08 - 09:22 AM I can recommend a small book called Man and his Shed It comprises photographs of men in their assorted sheds with a couple of background paragraphs for each. Wonderfully quirky. See you all Wednesday. |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Les in Chorlton Date: 28 Aug 08 - 10:34 AM Like this? Shresbury's best night spot |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Les in Chorlton Date: 28 Aug 08 - 10:36 AM Sean you are brilliant! Pity I cannot spell Shrewsbury's and thanks John I must return to my shed and prepare for Wednesday! Cheers L in C |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Jack Blandiver Date: 28 Aug 08 - 11:14 AM That's right, Les - but that one there links to the URL for the thumbnail; go to the big picture and get the URL for that then you're in business. Low Tide off Victoria Quay, Fleetwood, 24-8-08 |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Les in Chorlton Date: 28 Aug 08 - 12:03 PM Like this maybe? A bigger spot? L in C |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Jack Blandiver Date: 28 Aug 08 - 12:16 PM That's it - excellent pictures. What's the story??? |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Les in Chorlton Date: 28 Aug 08 - 12:36 PM The Shrewsbury Folk Festival is one of the best in the country, I don't doubt that for a minute. Great line up - lots of more or less traditional music, lots of innovation, workshops and sessions. Camping on site - great food, involvement of 15- 25 age group. However I may be alone in feeling the toilet and washing facilities are grim. Most responses on the SFF thread point out that they are better than most festivals! I couldn't bring myself to photograph the Gents etc. but was amused by some of the facilities offered to the Agricultural workers who clearly use the site during the rest of the year. I really feel they deserve something better. Cheers Les |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Spleen Cringe Date: 28 Aug 08 - 06:32 PM Back on the scene (back on the scene) like a folk machine... Should I get me coat already? See you all next week... |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Les in Chorlton Date: 28 Aug 08 - 06:41 PM Get your coat and head for the Beech!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Jack Blandiver Date: 29 Aug 08 - 04:49 AM Yo Spleen - where ya been? Rachel & I are Wyrding The Fylde this weekend - see itinerary on other thread & download our Steamer set from Tuesday night at: Sedayne & Rachel, Live at The Steamer, Fleetwood, 26-8-08* (by which you'll see Alison Gross in now an integral part of of our act) so if you fancy some choice Venereum Arvum, and lots more besides of course - & we're still up for a cuppa on the Fury Wagon. So the huts are used as bogs, Les? When I think of some of the festival facilities I've used in my time I'd say they're positively luxurious! * Free to all! Click on the link, takes but a minute to download on broadband; 20 minutes of merry mayhem from Rachel & I including... The Woodcutter's Song Alison Gross Owld Grye Santa Fe Trail ...all with charming ambience of dockside pub replete with as many non-punters as punters. |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Les in Chorlton Date: 29 Aug 08 - 04:58 AM Sean, the bogs were not so smart! |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Jack Blandiver Date: 29 Aug 08 - 06:18 AM How about two rough logs over a shallow trench, unisex, with not even a suggestion of cubicle, or yet toilet paper? "Use the grass, man - use the grass!" Oh, and another short set from the Fylde for you all; this was last night's support slot for Bernard Wrigley! Sedayne & Rachel, Live at The North Euston Hotel, Fleetwood, 28-8-08 The Trees They Do Grow High True Thomas Riverdance (Rachel's beautiful song about the wrecked ro-ro ferry - see Here for picture of Rachel & Riverdance!) |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Les in Chorlton Date: 29 Aug 08 - 02:03 PM Ok back to matters in hand, I have just visited the Beech as part of physiotherapy for my aching back. Half of Timothy Taylor Landlord and a reassurance that Wednesday is still ours is better than most other things. Trying not to confront the Beech directly I visited the Southern on Mauldeth Road, now an "Irish Pub". It has a reasonable room for a conventional Folk Club, but only John Smiths, Tetley and Boddingtons all on "Smoothflow" - beer with out the bother of taste. Having been reassured - the Landlady said we can put a poster up - I left and headed for the Marble, the best pub in the world. It serves amazing Marble Beers brewed at the back of the Marble Arch on Rochdale Road. My son treated me to a glass of Lagonda (5%) IPA and the back ache is but a memory. Incidently we would be welcome in the Marble for songs and tunes on a Monday or Tuesday but the room is a bit small. Cheers L in C |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Jack Blandiver Date: 03 Sep 08 - 12:58 PM After the rigours of The Fylde Festival - basically endless singing from last Tuesday through to Monday - Rachel's voice is on the fritz, so we've decided to give it rest. So have good one & see you all in October; but I'm planning to be at the storytelling night at The Chopin Bar on Friday the 19th September so hopefully see Kate and Ingrid there, and anyone else who feels like a tale or two. |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Les in Chorlton Date: 03 Sep 08 - 01:05 PM Take care you two and gargle with something tasty! Cheers Les |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: John J Date: 04 Sep 08 - 04:43 AM A very good sing once again - thanks to Les once again. Next Wednesday is 'songs in the snug' at the Saracen's Head in Warburton: Date: Wednesday 10 September 2008 Time: 21:00 - 23:30 Repeats: This event repeats every month on the second Wednesday. Location: Saracen's Head, Warburton Notes: 2nd and 4th Wednesdays each month JJ |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Les in Chorlton Date: 04 Sep 08 - 04:55 AM Well, I didn't miss the flashing lights or the dog and the candles took years off a number of us. Thanks to Ken, Olga, Bill, John J, Alan, John R, Gordon, Anne, John ?, Dave, Bob, Sue, Kate, Ged and Norman for songs poems and tunes Also Dave and Martin fist time at the Beech, Ingrid for a great story and John R for accompanying the story on the Smallpipes. Thanks to all who tuned up and joined in choruses. Sorry we couldn't squeeze everybody into the room. It was an exceptional evening of songs and tunes and I think most people who wanted to got two songs. We missed Sean and Rachel but we look forward to hearing them on Wednesday the first of October. Thanks again L in C |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Phil Edwards Date: 04 Sep 08 - 12:43 PM Sorry to have missed this one (code in the doze) - it sounds just as extraordinary as the last one. Roll on October! |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Les in Chorlton Date: 04 Sep 08 - 12:53 PM Sorry you misseed it Phil it was a bit good. I think it's only fair to point out that after the dog incident in August and the current discussion about dogs at Festivals the Snug in which we sing will be dog free in future. Cheers Les |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Les in Chorlton Date: 25 Sep 08 - 09:46 AM Folks, looks like we are football free and welcome, the hand pumps are serving: Cheshire IPA from Dunham Massey Hobgoblin from Marstons Best and Landlord from Taylors and much else besides! We should be in good voice Cheers Les |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Jack Blandiver Date: 25 Sep 08 - 09:56 AM We'll be there, Les - with the Leg of the Mallard & other such seasonal goodies, direct from Ormskirk and Liverpool respectively. Looking forward, as ever & always... |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Les in Chorlton Date: 25 Sep 08 - 11:15 AM Sean, the Leg of a Mallard! I look forward to hearing this fine and subtle ballad. I found it in a book but couldn't get the feel or swing of it really. I feel sure you will do the Mallard much good! Toe toey etc |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Jack Blandiver Date: 25 Sep 08 - 12:13 PM What do you mean ballad? There's a song? I was just going bring the quack-legs (in aspic) as my contribution for a good old October nosh! Landlord, quack-legs, and... cake, anyone? But, now you've mentioned there's a song, I'll have suppose I'll have to seek it out! |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Spleen Cringe Date: 25 Sep 08 - 12:52 PM Looking forward to it. It's written on the calendar in mallard blood. |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Les in Chorlton Date: 25 Sep 08 - 01:01 PM Sean, not a ballard at all a daft 'adding up song' in the sense that each part of the bird is eaten and the chorus lengthens as each bit is added on. That is too hard to explain. Perhaps others could explain it or better still, come to the Beech and sing it. I offer a free pint of choice to any one who will come and sing it. Oh, I have an eat and what have I ate? I have an ate the toe of a Mallard Toe toe-ey Nee-mies'an all Oh I have eaten it feathers and all So good -a meat was the Mallard Cheers L in C |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Jack Blandiver Date: 25 Sep 08 - 01:46 PM I jest of course! That's exactly what I meant - and here to prove it is a link to my Myspace Page where I've just uploaded the version I've done for my Naked Season album. Rest assured I won't be bring the cacophonous hurdy-gurdy (any extraneous noises here are deliberate by the way) but something a little sweeter & more portable... Actually - it doesn't appear to be there yet, but give it a an hour or two & it will be. Things are a bit odd at Myspace right now... |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Phil Edwards Date: 25 Sep 08 - 01:54 PM I remember it sounding something like this, at least towards the end: I've ate, I've ate, and what have I ate? I've ate the toe of the mallard Toe and toe, foot and foot, leg and leg, nameless purple slithery viscera and nameless purple slithery viscera*, [continues for some time], neck and neck, It all went into the pillagey-o**! Most pitiful*** neck of the mallard. *Or words to that effect **This is definitely what the guy on the record was singing. ***This, on the other hand, was probably 'beautiful'. (I suspect IB knows all this, if not more...) |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Les in Chorlton Date: 25 Sep 08 - 02:29 PM Ahhhh, honest, (?) as soon as I had posted I knew that Sean would know it and I think he should bring the Hurdy Gurdy. I cure for sinusitus, infections of the inner and outer ear, the hips, the pips, the palsy and the gout, the pains ............. I'm sure you get my drift L in C |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Spleen Cringe Date: 25 Sep 08 - 02:50 PM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lbVLZPYyZs |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Les in Chorlton Date: 26 Sep 08 - 03:56 AM Sean's Mallard is a wondrous thing I hope he brings it to the Beech! The band on the post above are also excellent perhaps they will come to the Beech also? Chiz L in C |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: GUEST,Rapunzel Date: 26 Sep 08 - 07:42 AM Looking forward to seeing you all on Wednesday - I think my pipes are now back in working order - haven't had much luck with keeping the voice healthy this year. But really, don't encourage the hurdy gurdy - he can play it well, but it's a bit of an old banger, with two careless owners and it hasn't got a full service history. |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Jack Blandiver Date: 26 Sep 08 - 08:38 AM Hasn't been the same since I killed a cat with it actually... Talking about that, weird how cats how hiss and arch their backs at the sight of our car. |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Les in Chorlton Date: 26 Sep 08 - 12:26 PM I feel sure you will both be as welcome as ever, safe in tradition with innovation, and I think the HG will bring added fragrance to an already exotic occasion or some such bxllxcks. See you then L in C |

Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Phil Edwards Date: 01 Oct 08 - 04:09 AM Let's hope it looks like that! There's sunshine on Chorlton as I type, but the clouds look rather threatening. I'll be there, but I may be a bit croaky. Alternatively, I may be a bit croaky, but I'll be there. |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: John J Date: 01 Oct 08 - 04:13 AM I'll be there - on my bike if the weather's not too dreadful. JJ |
Subject: RE: Singaround, The Beech, Chorlton From: Les in Chorlton Date: 01 Oct 08 - 07:54 AM The sun always shines in Chorlton. \it's just that the clouds and rain get in the way sometimes. Chiz Les |
