Well, it's looking good for the first Wednesday in September which I calculate is the 3rd. I understand from the Landlady that the famous "Beech Light Show" will probably be available to add visual to our audio performances!

Alan,

wellington's are a fine and wonderful thing and have been seen in the Beech on many occasions, although generally associated with work and allotments. I think people might expect you to sing only sea shanties so perhaps take a chance with some thing more seasonal.

I really intend to get to the Saracen's but am currently stumbling about and grumbling about my dodgy back. I have a fine collection of drugs to experiment with so I cannot make the Saracen's this week. I feel I need advice on the meaning of the phrase "Avoid alcohol". I feel their must be a technical get out from a direct prohibition. What do you think?

As for "link hyjacking" seems like an excellent idea - we should all spread our cells / singarounds as far as we can.

Perhaps sandals would be more seasonal and also have the advantage that should the worst occur, drainage of superfluous liquids will be much more efficient!

It comprises photographs of men in their assorted sheds with a couple of background paragraphs for each. Wonderfully quirky.

The Shrewsbury Folk Festival is one of the best in the country, I don't doubt that for a minute. Great line up - lots of more or less traditional music, lots of innovation, workshops and sessions. Camping on site - great food, involvement of 15- 25 age group.

However I may be alone in feeling the toilet and washing facilities are grim. Most responses on the SFF thread point out that they are better than most festivals!

I couldn't bring myself to photograph the Gents etc. but was amused by some of the facilities offered to the Agricultural workers who clearly use the site during the rest of the year. I really feel they deserve something better.

Ok back to matters in hand, I have just visited the Beech as part of physiotherapy for my aching back. Half of Timothy Taylor Landlord and a reassurance that Wednesday is still ours is better than most other things.

Trying not to confront the Beech directly I visited the Southern on Mauldeth Road, now an "Irish Pub". It has a reasonable room for a conventional Folk Club, but only John Smiths, Tetley and Boddingtons all on "Smoothflow" - beer with out the bother of taste.

Having been reassured - the Landlady said we can put a poster up - I left and headed for the Marble, the best pub in the world. It serves amazing Marble Beers brewed at the back of the Marble Arch on Rochdale Road. My son treated me to a glass of Lagonda (5%) IPA and the back ache is but a memory.

Incidently we would be welcome in the Marble for songs and tunes on a Monday or Tuesday but the room is a bit small.

After the rigours of The Fylde Festival - basically endless singing from last Tuesday through to Monday - Rachel's voice is on the fritz, so we've decided to give it rest.

So have good one & see you all in October; but I'm planning to be at the storytelling night at The Chopin Bar on Friday the 19th September so hopefully see Kate and Ingrid there, and anyone else who feels like a tale or two.

Thanks to all who tuned up and joined in choruses. Sorry we couldn't squeeze everybody into the room. It was an exceptional evening of songs and tunes and I think most people who wanted to got two songs.

We missed Sean and Rachel but we look forward to hearing them on Wednesday the first of October.

not a ballard at all a daft 'adding up song' in the sense that each part of the bird is eaten and the chorus lengthens as each bit is added on. That is too hard to explain.

Perhaps others could explain it or better still, come to the Beech and sing it. I offer a free pint of choice to any one who will come and sing it.

sounds good to me. Irish musicians meet in the Lloyds in Chorlton evry Monday and they are as good as it gets. But, it does get a bit quick.

I enjoy Cotswold tunes and English Country dance tunes and am keen to hear them played. Perhaps we need another night for tunes?

I play it in regular tuning on a tenor banjo. How are you getting on with the whistle version, i.e. which pitch of whistle do you use? As I recall, Theme A is in D and Theme B is in G.

It's a grand tune. I first came across it on Mr Fox album tacked on the end of a song. I learned it roughly by ear then came across the dots about 2 years ago. This showed complexity my ear had missed. Now I can't play it at all.

Hi Will & Les; I play Jenny Lind on a 'D' Clarke's whistle which i recently aquired. Find the tone a lot nicer than 'generation' which i've usually played in the past. Heard the tune on 'utube' played by the Boat Band. Love to hear it on tenor banjo Will, maybe at the Beech sometime - i really will try and get there at some point Les.

Hi everyone. Les finally pointed me in the right direction (ie Mudcats) and I happily found I could log on from work - yet another way to waste more time :)

Helen, do bring your box then you can join in the tunes and maybe teach us some new ones. Can't play Jenny Lind myself yet but could no doubt give it a go.

I will try for the Saracens myself if I can, it sounds fascinating. I've never been to see Mummers - sorry John - Souling Plays before so should be interesting.
