I found the book 'Irish Country Songs' on Google Books. With it, one can play any number of songs, not just 'Gartan Mother's Lullaby.'

It's a lovely, tranquil tune in 6/8.

I think you'll find that Herbert Hughes collected (and arranged?) the tune. The lyrics are by Joseph Campbell/Seosamh Mac Cathmhaoil.

Mary O'Hara was born in 1935, so I suppose you could say that she started in in the 1930s! 'Gartan' was written by Joseph Campbell and first published in 1904.

I know this song from the singing of harpist and singer Mary O'Hara. I found a CD back in the 90s or early 00s, probably re-produced from an LP. From her bio, she apparently started in the 30s.

I got the Irish Gaelic lyrics from Ciarán Ó Bréartúin, an Irish musician resident in Italy. He found them in Nancy Calthorpe, "The Calthorpe Collection" (1974). Coincidentally, Nancy Calthorpe was once Ciarán's music theory teacher. Perhaps she wrote the translation? It doesn't seem to be attributed in the collection, as when Ciarán wrote to me he was under the impression that the Irish was the original version, something I very strongly doubt from the flavour of the language.

A friend sent me these lyrics, The question is, did Joseph Campbell translate from the Irish or -as I suspect- are these Irish language lyrics a translation from his English verses?

I have scanned and posted the music/lyrics for The Gartan Mother's Lullaby, as printed in 1909 by Herbert Hughes. The four volumes of his collected Irish Country Songs are out of print, but are available through inter-library loans. I have tried to find them through internet out-of-print sites, but no luck yet.
