Benny Graham and Johnny Handle will be performing their show of waterway songs and images at the North Cheshire Cruising Club, High Lane, Stockport SK6 8AA. This is on Sunday, 7th September 2008, at 7.30 pm. Tickets cost £5 but if any mudcatters manage to get there and mention Mudcat to the ticket seller (probably me) I will personally buy them a drink.
Ian

May take you up on that rash offer, Ian. A chance to see Benny the Whale and Johnny Handle is not to be missed.
Could you give us a bridge number and any other useful info?

So that's who Benny the Whale is, Benny Graham.
I've been singing a song that I got from an old friend & mudcatter Ricky "Riggy" Rackin. I picked it off Riggy about 30 yrs ago & only knew it came from someone called Benny the Whale. The song's called the "Idle Welder" the tune's very close to the "4 Loom Weaver".
Would Steve or Greg thank Benny & let him know that, that song has grown long legs in America.

Thanks
Barry

Further info for Greg and any others coming by canal : The NCCC clubhouse is at the end of the High Lane Arm (about 300 yards long with limited turning) which is accessed via bridge 12 on the Macclesfield Canal. This is just 100 yards before bridge 11 which is where the A6 (Stockport-Buxton) crosses the canal. There are good moorings between bridges 12 and 11 (near Bull's Head) and also through bridge 11. The club premises can be most easily accessed on foot by walking downhill on the A6 for 100 yards where they can be found behind/beside a Thai restaurant in an old canal warehouse. Before the show starts there will be a pie/peas supper for club members but I dare say a few extra pies can be popped in the oven for anyone who has taken the trouble to arrive by boat. There are also numerous take-aways on the A6. The club bar will be open all evening.
Cheers,
Ian

It has been a pleasure to reconnect with Benny after 35 years via his website Benny Graham
and order his CDs. I particularly enjoy the one that shares a title with this thread, and specifically the title cut on that recording.

Good on you, Benny !

Riggy

Unfortunately Benny's site still seems to be down so the link given doesn't work. If anyone wants to contact him he will be performing 'They're Coming Back to the Water' at North Cheshire Cruising Club, High Lane, nr Stockport at 7.30 on Sunday, 7th September 2008 (and there are plenty of tickets left). Though this show has been recorded on CD and video (with Benny and the late Jeff Dennison) this is a chance to see it live with Benny and Johnny Handle (High Level Ranters) performing. Should be a good night.

Too far for me to drop by, unfortunately. I saw Benny in Scotland in 2004, with Bob Fox, bought their CD 'How Are You Off For Coals?' which is great, and have wanted 'They're Coming Back To The Water' ever since. Thanks for pointing out his website!

I have known Benny Graham for the best part of 40 years. I can tell you without hesitation that he is one of the best singers in the country, UK that is. He has a beautiful voice and his singing is full of a life force that lifts the spirit like no other. I have no idea why he isn't recognised by the majority as a national musical treasure. My advice to you all is - Go to hear Benny, solo or with Johnny Handle, Bob Fox, or Pegleg Ferret, you won't regret it, not if you know what good singing is about. If you run a club or festival, book him and bring something special to your event. Folks in the USA or Oz, NZ, etc, do yourselves a favour, invite him over. It's time that the folk world woke up to his ability. Bravo Benny!

My cookie keeps on going missing, hence the 'guest Roy Harris' in that last posting. I say again, either as Roy or Burl, GO HEAR BENNY!

Ian
Is there a phone number for reserving tickets? People might be nervous about setting off for a long drive(or boat) without being sure they can get in.
If you don't like to give it out publicly, could you PM me?

Greg
I can be contacted via e-mail (either via this web-site or 'Songs of the Inland Waterways' web-site). I believe it inadvisable to repeat the address here. I can also be phoned on 07951 433 631. Please phone if you want to reserve tickets but, rest assured, anyone who wants to attend will get in. There will be a Holland pie/mushy peas and chips supper served between 6.00 and 7.00 at £1.50. Please book this in advance by contacting me one way or another. I don't want to run out of 'Wigan caviare".
Ian

Hope to see you on Sunday, John. The info about the PA is useful because I was expecting to be setting my equipment up - and doing the pies at the same time!

Many Thanks
