Subject: RE: Music of the People - RTE Radio From: Joe Offer Date: 23 Sep 09 - 03:14 AM This series is still available, and it's a wonderful thing to listen to. It starts with news and advertising - so be patient. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Music of the People - RTE Radio From: Fred McCormick Date: 29 Aug 08 - 06:52 AM Thanks for pointing that one out folks, I didn't know the series was running. Anyway, not only are the programmes available at the link which Joe posted, they're downloadable. Just running the cursor over the media player, there's evidently a lot of very interesting stuff there. |

Subject: Music of the People From: Thompson Date: 28 Aug 08 - 04:58 PM Tonight, the last (sob) programme of the RTE Radio 1 series Music of the People was broadcast. This was a series with historic recordings by people like Alan Lomax, Seamus Ennis, et al, of traditional musicians singing and playing and speaking. It ended - for Dubliners fans - with an extraordinary recording of the Dubliners singing The Sash, with the chorus picked up, word-perfect, by the attendance at a Clare séisiún, and a few sarcastic little verses thrown in, mocking current events such as Kennedy's (then) recent visit to Ireland. There's also a haunting version of Seo h-í, seo h-ó, with the presenter musing that while he doesn't believe in fairies, he himself wouldn't sing the second verse at home, as he doesn't like to encourage the fairies around when children are going to sleep. It should be online tomorrow (August 29 2008), and will be available for a week afterwards. You'll have to use some extra software to record the podcast, as it isn't directly downloadable, but it's well worth it if you can. |
