Subject: Facebook....finding the musicians From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 02 Sep 08 - 08:43 AM I know there've been other threads on Facebook, but I'm a real dingbat at locating them on here. Well, I joined this morning..but I can't seem to find where all you musicians are! Someone sent me Show of Hands, Seth, Miranda Sykes, Isambarde and I found Noah Zacharin myself...but where is everyone else???? Is it that most musicians prefer Myspace? |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 02 Sep 08 - 08:44 AM Any help would be appreciated...(sorry, forgot to put that part in) :0) |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 02 Sep 08 - 08:45 AM Oops! And Jim Moray, I've got Jim too :0) |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: greg stephens Date: 02 Sep 08 - 08:46 AM I joined Facebook, but it mostly seems to be about poking people, sending them catuses and stuff. There are a lot of musos around, but maybe spread thin? |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 02 Sep 08 - 08:53 AM "but it mostly seems to be about poking people" Good heavens! Are you *sure* Greg? (cross eyed smiley) I'll certainly watch out for anyone trying that on with me, that's for certain! LOL I've got Barry Hunt too (hello Barry!)...and just now...Ron Olesko! This is getting to be quite fun! :0) And...I have a music player too, so I can choose loads of different tracks to put on there..only just got it started though, but I've got Show of Hands, Noah and Reg Meuross songs up there so far..and..Reg has 'The Poacher' on there, which is the one he played with Martin Carthy the other day at Sidmouth...and wrote too. Excellent folk song. |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: greg stephens Date: 02 Sep 08 - 08:56 AM Virtual poking (I think). And those strange sounding catuses should really be cactuses. |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 02 Sep 08 - 08:57 AM And now...I have Joolzy on there too! Joolz (Julian Parker) is an Oysterband fan..in fact, he's probably the biggest Oysterband fan in the World! Such a lovely man..and so is his wife, Carol..lovely that is, not a man... :0) I have to go and have a natter with him...and leave you guys in peace.. Do you know, we 'bumped' into Joolz and Carol at Show of Hands Big Gig III at the Royal Albert Hall last year...didn't know they were going...and suddenly I hear this magical Brummie accent calling out my name..and there they both were! Such a happy couple, always smiling..that's what The Oysterband does for you, you see.. :0) |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: Lox Date: 02 Sep 08 - 09:10 AM Is there a mudcat group on facebook? |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 02 Sep 08 - 09:30 AM Yes, Lox....there is. :0) I'm not sure if people can see this though, unless they belong to Facebook... The Mudcat Cafe on Facebook |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 02 Sep 08 - 09:34 AM Ooh! Ron has quite a few musicians on his page...I'm just about to ask Randall Willliams over...and Mike Regenstrief's in there too, so he'll have more.. This is fun! :0) And...I've just joined the Mudcat Cafe Group.. |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: DebC Date: 02 Sep 08 - 09:37 AM I am finding Facebook a bit complicated. I have a regular profile, a music profile, and an iLike profile. I am not sure how to meld them into one and the same, maybe that can't be done. Still, there I am on Facebook and I'd really appreciate it if you could become a "fan". Debra Cowan |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: Brakn Date: 02 Sep 08 - 09:39 AM Facebook - I can't really see any benefit to joining it. I did join and found that the world and his wife and people I hardly know now want to be my friend. Then you get bombarded with them telling you and the world what they are doing. Too much information. It's success is that there are a lot of bored people out there who don't have many "real" friends. |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 02 Sep 08 - 10:17 AM Thanks, Debra...request sent over...and 'The Long Grey Line' is now playing in my music player..Lovely song! :0) |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: bubblyrat Date: 02 Sep 08 - 10:24 AM I disagree !!---Karen (Wild Flying Dove ) and I have loads of friends in both the "real world" and the "folk world" ( same thing, if you ask me !),and yet we both enjoy being on "Facebook",and have made many new friends through it ( for example, "Jenny O", from Oz, who we are hoping to meet in person later this month !). Both of us gave up the childish bits like "poking", or "throwing a sheep/pig/cactus/dwarf" at someone ages ago, and you always get to see who it is who might want to become your "friend" ( including a photo of them ) before inviting them (if you wish) to do so-----in any case, they are not just random people, but rather friends of other, existing,Facebook Friends of yours / ones anyway, so probably share similar interests; that's the whole point !!! We love it !! |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: GUEST,Bob Ryszkiewicz Date: 02 Sep 08 - 10:24 AM Hi Lizzie: http://www.facebook.com/people/Bob_Ryszkiewicz/805499376 In my opinion MySpace is MUCH better than Facebook, which I find harder to navigate...bob |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: Dave Sutherland Date: 02 Sep 08 - 10:27 AM Try looking at various groups to which your friends belong. There is Mudcat Cafe, Friends of Folk Music, Sidmouth, Off The Tracks, Nic Jones ...... all manner of things. |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: Anne Lister Date: 02 Sep 08 - 10:29 AM I'd have entirely the opposite viewpoint, Bob ... I love Facebook, have been having heaps of fun on it and have been bored with MySpace for ages now. On the other hand I haven't yet mastered putting music up on Facebook, so Facebook is more about friendships for me and MySpace is more about professional stuff. If you've found the Mudcat group, Lizzie, you should have found me too. There are lots of us around. Me, I don't poke people (usually) but I've had some great games of Scrabulous and other word games and enjoy doing jigsaws ... And anyone who'd like to become one of my fans would be most welcome, too. At the moment it's a small but select group! Anne (Lister) |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: bubblyrat Date: 02 Sep 08 - 10:34 AM There you are, Lizzie !! If Anne Lister , no less, agrees with me, then Facebook ( I have had LOADS of Scrabulous games with her, as has WFD) can't be bad, can it ?? Roger V M |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 02 Sep 08 - 10:35 AM Thanks, Bob, request sent...and yes, I'm struggling with Facebook, a bit too. I don't find it nearly so 'musician friendly' as Myspace. Way too fussy..and you don't seem to have any options in how to build/design your page. But I'll keep at it a little longer. And I miss not being able to have music playing, the moment people find your page..even though I've got a music player. Hi Anne...haven't had time to look too 'deep inside' the Mudcat Cafe yet, but I'll get there, and certainly come a-knocking at your door when I find you, I like your music very much. |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 02 Sep 08 - 10:36 AM True, Bubbly, true.. :0) |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 02 Sep 08 - 11:32 AM Dave...are you 'out there' (Breton Cap)..I went to leave you a message but...it says you have an Advanced Wall..and I have to accept one myself before I can write to you. YIKES! And it gets worse, because Barry has a SUPER Wall, allegedly ;-) Oh! I am all of a dither and a stress! Myspace doesn't tax my brain cell in this way.. |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: RTim Date: 02 Sep 08 - 11:44 AM Hi All, I mainly use Facebook for Family and Friend contacts - Preferring MySpace for my "Musical" contacts - as I can put up my own music and aspects about myself that relate to that. Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: Barry Finn Date: 02 Sep 08 - 01:12 PM Hi Lizzie I'm on facebook too. Lizzie, you've got quite a set up on MySpace, facebook should be a breeze for you. I could use a few lessons from you. Anne, I tried to friend you on MySpace & couldn't get past your "whatever it is filter", it's easier on facebook but I'm not to active on either, MySpace, to me, seems more fit for music Barry |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 02 Sep 08 - 02:00 PM Here you go Barry. A great site.. Myspace Tutorial |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: GUEST,lox Date: 02 Sep 08 - 02:05 PM Excellent - I think I'll join! You'll have to guess which one I am (PM me on facebook if you think you know the answer) |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: Anne Lister Date: 02 Sep 08 - 03:43 PM Barry - I'll try to be your friend on MySpace! And Lizzie, all you have to do is search on Facebook with my name and you should find me. Anne |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 02 Sep 08 - 03:53 PM I'm on Facebook, too, though I also can't figure out how to store music. I'm just finding my way around it, but I'm enjoying contacts with friends from long ago and friends far away! |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 02 Sep 08 - 04:00 PM Question: Does Facebook ever freeze on you when you're trying to do something, like edit your status or whatnot? |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: GUEST,lox Date: 02 Sep 08 - 05:12 PM Answer: yes! I think the clientelle are growing in number at a significantly higher rate than the site is able to handle. Sometimes my modem disconnects! This only happens when I'm on facebook, and usually when I'm using the Facebook IM facility. |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: Lizzie Cornish 1 Date: 10 Sep 08 - 07:54 AM Just for the record..I've left Facebook. I couldn't do with it's controlling format, no music playing on pages that are closed to all, apart from 'friends'...together with more adverts than Myspace and things that didn't work. It doesn't fit with my brain pattern..and I think my BP went off the monitor on many an occasion..so now...I'm free of Facebook, apart from emails which tell me that people are still leaving messages on my 'Wall' even though it's not there???? But I'm not going to worry...breathe...breathe.. So apologies to all, and please don't think I'm ignoring you, I'm simply not there..(no jokes now..) ;0) |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: Barry Finn Date: 10 Sep 08 - 11:16 AM Goodbye Lizzie, I miss you already. Barry |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: GUEST,The Lemonade Lady Date: 10 Sep 08 - 06:31 PM I hate Face Book. Every time I go on it there's something new to complicate things even more. And people keep sending me things like a 'green patch' I don't like it at all. The only thing that is interesting but doesn't work very well is the instant messenger. Myspace is much better, less complicated and it's instant messenger is very good too. There, said it now! Sal |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: JedMarum Date: 11 Sep 08 - 01:07 AM humbug on facebook! It needs a facelift! ;-) It took too long to sort it out. It was too difficult to use and seemed to have nothing I wanted ... I gave it a try and gave up ... |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: JedMarum Date: 11 Sep 08 - 01:16 AM I'm with you Sal! |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: le cheffie Date: 11 Sep 08 - 06:52 AM I have facebook and through made contact with loads of old work mates. With the green patch stuff and all the other stupid applications you have the option to ignore them. I have loads of applications that I just don't bother with. Going to start looking for mudcat and other folk stuff on there now though Nick |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: Suegorgeous Date: 11 Sep 08 - 10:10 AM Myspace rules! well, for music anyway... |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: black walnut Date: 30 Dec 09 - 12:28 PM I had a bit too much fun on Facebook so I'm taking a break for a while. I got my daughter to change my password for me, so I can't just break in. I'm trying to kick the habit and do a bit more playing, singing, reading, cooking, tuning.... ~b.w. |
Subject: RE: Facebook - finding the musicians From: Genie Date: 25 Jan 10 - 08:48 PM It's also possible to tell Facebook to ignore (or reject) ALL games, applications, etc. For me the bigger problem with the games & Facebook apps (e.g., "gifts," ad-hoc FB "groups) is that if you allow those, you give FaceBook access to all your personal information. Ignore those or block them and things get a lot simpler. One thing that can be an issue on Facebook is that many of us use screen names here at Mudcat and other online sites but FB wants to know your real name. {You can give them your real name and then choose a different user name, but only if you have text messaging on your mobile phone (I don't) and want to give that phone # to Facebook (I don't).] For now, I'm using a business name, GenieSinger, on Facebook, mainly because so many people I "know" here at Mudcat and other places online would not recognize me by my real name. But that makes for its own problems -- e.g., my own brother rejected my FB friend request because he didn't know who I was. LOL |
Subject: RE: Facebook....finding the musicians From: Don(Wyziwyg)T Date: 26 Jan 10 - 08:36 PM I can vouch that Genie Singer is a safe friend, and exactly what it says on the can. Facebook, however, is far from leakproof when it comes to your personal details, and slow to react when somebody uses your identity to establish a fake profile. The first protective action to be taken is, IMHO, to reject all apps. They hand over your privacy, not just to Facebook, but to others using the same apps, not all of whom are your friends. BE WARNED! Facebook membership requires extreme caution. Remember, the fact that you haven't yet been targetted means simply that you haven't upset anyoneYET! I know what I'm talking about. I (in common with several others) upset the BNP. Don T. |
Subject: RE: Facebook. Be wary of the pitfalls From: Genie Date: 26 Jan 10 - 09:51 PM Well, my brother finally accepted my FB invitation. (It took a bit of email correspondence in addition to FB messages, but it's finally done. Problem originally was that when I put in my "friend request" I happened to have a profile pic of me in clown makeup, so he didn't recognize me.) LOL But in the last few days it appears I have been "unfriended" by a couple of guys whose names and faces I don't recognize and whose names I didn't find in a cursory search of the FB friends of other Mudcatters or my friends and family. I don't know that there's any thing underhanded going on here -- I may have accepted on of the "friend suggestions that FaceBook apparently sends when it notices that you have friends in common with other FB users, and the guys may have "unfriended" me when they realized we neither know each other nor have much in common. Who knows? -- but it does make me wonder if there may be some sort of subterfuge going on. I don't do the "apps" at all, and I've stopped "joining" any "groups" that I don't know to exist outside of FaceBook. As Don says, too many people can get access to your information via FB if you're not careful. |
