Tonight i watched a wonderful show...a documentary on one of the world's premier field recording specialists...with over 10,000 recordings from all over the world in archives of the Library of Congress. I believe many of these are also in the Smithsonian Museum
http://www.pbs.org/pov/pov2006/lomax/
Jphn and Allen Lomax helped to preserve many many folk songs, field hollers, ballads and other treaures.
http://www.pbs.org/pov/pov2006/lomax/special_folklife.html
In one of the most profound quotes from him, he said that
people deserved cultural equity ( i wish i had written down the exact
words he used...)

and went on to say that broadcasters and corporations own the means
of tranmitting culture, and the individuals with receivers can listen but it is only a one way proposition...and the "folks" need to be able to have equal time for their grass roots arts.
Not just to be fed what ever culture the media wants them to hear and see.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0439682/
This contains interviews with Peter Kennedy, Jean Ritchie, and others
including film clips of musicians from Spain, Scotland and Leadbelly, Pete Seeger, and others.

I wish i had had the means to record it, as i was not able to see it all, and would not like to miss a minute...so if anyone else gets the chance to see it on your Public Television channel, turn it on!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lomax_the_Songhunter
i believe it came out in germany in 2004 or 2005.
Lomax passed away in 2002.
http://www.lomaxthesonghunter.com/ this seems to be a Dutch site...
as the film mker is from Holland.

John and Alan Lomax were very important to folk music in the U.S.
and around the world, many of the field recordings that exist today
were because of their work!

I have just bought (from Amazon) and watched the DVD, 'Lomax the Songhunter', and it is a wonderful piece of work, with many marvellous cameos, so I have revived this thread so that more people can know about, buy and see this superb film.

Mike, a personal bit for you.

At the Folk Alliance yearly gathering in Cleveland, he and I were both in wheelchairs. In jest, I asked him if he'd like to race down the hall. -----------------------------It didn't happen.
