I heard from Theresa today that she has been diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease, or to be more precise Progressive Bulbar Palsy. So her problems have not been , as we thought, the result of a stroke.

I know her friends will want to know this although I'm sure that Theresa is still trying to put a brave face on things.

She will certainly eventually lose her ability to sing and is waiting to have a tube inserted in her stomach so she can take in liquids.

She finds talking difficult so anyone wishing to contact her should do so via email. PM ME IF YOU WANT DETAILS

Thanks for posting this, nutty. I got an e-mail from Theresa this morning. We had the great pleasure of having several Catters here at the house for a sing around three years ago. Colin, Theresa, Noreen, and Sussex Carole among others were here to share songs with me and the Gospel Messengers. Theresa was a special joy to us (as was Colin.) My wife Ruth and I and the Gospel Messengers hold Theresa warm in our hearts and have been keeping her in prayer.

I'm gutted to hear this news, too. Lovely lady in the truest sense of both terms. A real joy, a belter of a songstress and communicator and wonderful company on that magic trip to the U.S. in 2005. You're in my thoughts and prayers.
Love and hugs

I too have wonderful memories of Teresa and her voice. I remember particularly when Amos was strumming a lively beat and Teresa shouted to us all, Does anyone have a song to go with that?

Thanks for your lovely spirit, Teresa; you give a lot of pleasure to a lot of people.

May this diagnosis be a passing thing and never as severe as feared.

Theresa is one of my oldest and dearest friends who is guilty of introducing me to this crazy place where I have made such other good friends too.
There is really nothing more I can add to the wishes that have already expressed here and I know will continue to flood in from those who her larger than life personality and voice have touched throughout the years.

A few years ago I started a thread looking for a song and a singer we heard in 1990, when we went to Britain. We just knew it was a bag lady song but no-one could identify the singer or the song.

We didn't find her at the time but then she turned up at the Auckland folk festival with the Shellbacks in 2006.
It was Theresa!
There is a photo of the catters there, in the events pics here.
Lots of love Theresa, from NZ.

Theresa was the inspiration for the first shanty I wrote (hurriedly)in 2001 for the bad shirts and shanties day at Whitby - she'd just won the Saltburn shanty competition, and I was trying to think of something to sing when it was my turn that wouldn't already have been sung. I've had to adopt a similar strategy each year since.

SING 'EM LOUD - SHANTY SESSION PLAN B

I'm feeling sad and so forlorn
Sing 'em loud
Can't help the gender I was born
Sing 'em loud

We weedy women high and shrill
Sing 'em loud
Can't compete with Jim or Bill
Sing 'em loud

While they are belting out each word
Sing 'em loud
We women struggle to be heard
Sing 'em loud

But there is one who breaks the rule she
Sings 'em loud
Her name it is Theresa Tooley, she
Sings 'em loud

Hope you can keep singing for a while yet!

Kitty

Theresa, I only met you at the Getaway, but I'm not likely to forget THAT experience! I started singing 'Fire Down Below' (the one with the hula girls) and I heard this deep, strong, beautiful harmony. It took me a while to figure out it was coming out of this little teeny woman.

Certainly there is joy in music, but being loved is pretty damned good, and you are. Enjoy your friends.

I have great memories of her singing at both the 2005 Getaway and at the 2007 Towersey Barn sings, where I got to know her a bit. I was extremely horored that she asked me for the words to learn to a song I sang at Towersey, the Great Lakes shanty "Leave Her Laddies, Leave Her", which I did. I was hoping I'd get to hear her sing it some day, maybe at Getaway, which she had originally hoped to attend. Looks like I might have to sing it for her there instead.

A great lady and a wonderful singer of all sorts of things. Someone I wish only the best in getting through her illness.

But if there's a way to beat this, then Theresa's one to find it.

One of my very favourite ladies: a fine fine singer and such a massive encouragement (and inspiration) to so many of us.

Fear not - you WILL sing again, Theresa!

My first memories of Theresa are probably at Fylde ff and John Booker drinking with Bill Tooley

I seem to have known Theresa for ever and she was always the first to start singing and loved to join in and get people going

She had a spot at Barnsley singaround last Easter and ended up singing with a group of lovely singers including Sussex Carole and I think Lynne Heraud and Pat Turner

She was I believe "gutted" at not making Saddleworth ff 2008 being virtually on her doorstep

Well time for a few more pints yet Theresa so lets see you around!!

So sad to hear this news. Even tho i Don't know Theresa on a personal level i saw her many times at Saddleworth. This year was my 10th visit to Saddleworth Festival and remarked to a friend later that i hadn't seen Theresa Tooley this year. So used to seeing her around the festival with that lovely smile and singing voice either solo or in earlier years with the fabulous 'Firm Friends'.

I can remember one occasion when Theresa and Bill used to camp at the festival pitching their tent next to mine. What kind & lovely neihgbours they were too!

Truly wish you well Theresa and pray they can get you as well as possible. Look forward to seeing you at Saddlewoth in the future.

Best regards, Vin

I have always valued your friendship. You have on many occaisions given me words of advice and encouragement. My first memory of you was {as I have told you in the past} of a night in Warwick Festival. You were singing " Bully in the Alley "......AS only YOU could.
You have had to bear a few Hard Knocks in recent years.

When the Shellbacks came to the Getaway in '05 I wanted to include some of them in the program, so I PM'd the Shellbacks who were Mudcatters by that time, and asked for suggestions. Needless to say, a frequent comment was, "... and you want Theresa Tooley for Chorus Songs."

Theresa, what I remember most is your big smile in the late night singing and the joy of looking straight at each other as we sang and just grinning with pleasure at the richness of the sound. Your voice was the underlying support for such wonderful choruses there in the Ramblewood dining hall.

We've missed you since then.

This is very difficult news, Theresa. We will be thinking of you and hoping for the best outcomes possible. If hugs could heal it, you'd be in prime shape in no time.

Pete Ryder tells a story about Theresa ........
" I had been persuaded by Geof Pickles to do Cleckheaton and was really "cacking it * " as I had not been performing for some time. I was sat on stage in the Town Hall, not a seat to be had and I looked up and saw Theresa dancing in the isle. She was singing all the words (even the ones I made up before going on stage) and I just knew it was going to be all right ...... and it was!"

I think Theresa is a bit like Koll Kemp ...... they both would be pleasantly surprised by the esteem they are held in, by so many.

* Cacking it ....... a northern term equating to being "a bit worried about" something

Apart from many fond memories of late night sings in the Moor & Coast tent, the Bansley YMCA, the Redcar Rugby Club changing rooms and dozens more, I heard Bella Hardy, one of the best of the new generation of singers, say in a radio interview that one of her influences was "the late sing at Stainsby Festival with Theresa Tooley". There's no greater compliment in the folk world than having carried the tradition to the next generation.

Hi Kat
Teresa's the short one on the left pointing at Sussex Carole on the right.

Mary's that's not me, I don't even know that man & I don't know what he's doing either (& I'm not venturing a guess) but I do know that's my wife in the foreground smiling up at Theresa. Theresa could make a bronze bell rattle & shake & have a lamb go to slaughter laughing.
Speaking of being with her on stage. At the Getaway someone (Jeri??) asked me to do "Won't You Help Me To Raise Them" a Manhaden net hauling shanty, so I did it with Ken Schatz (cause Ken & I weren't sure who Jeri was asking), Theresa came right in as back up, what back up, it went so well that the 3 of us did it later that night in concert. She must've thought that I need a little lifting cause in front of the world she gave me the biggest pinch on the arse I'd ever received, enough to cause me to leap in the air & hit harmony notes that I never been able to reach since. She sure can bring up/out the best in people.

I sure miss you Theresa, come back over when you've rested up!

Barry

Having only just found and registered on mudcat today, I'm shattered to read of Teresa's cruel illness. She occupies a very special place in my heart since I first met her at Gill Turner's farmhouse folksong weekend in remote Middleton,Suffolk. Her perfect delivery of 'Daniel in the Lion's Den' - and many more are fortunately on a tape somewhere in my possession.

At Saddleworth festival two years ago I was honoured to have her beside this mere floorsinger, harmonising as a duo,as I made my best efforts delivering Dave webber's 'Lady of Autumnn'.

There's no justice in this world when a great lady as Theresa is handed out medical punishment as damning Progressive Bulbar Palsey.

Wishing you strength, energy and everything you wish for yourself,in the months and years ahead.

Love to you.
Harold Nield

Oh this is so NOT the news that I wanted to hear. Marian Button and I were only talking about Theresa a couple of weeks ago in Whitby, and had been hoping we might see her there. It was a joy to meet up with her every year at the National Festival and elsewhere... we'd formed a nice friendly little group of ex-winners of the Singing Competition ... Theresa, Moe Keast, me, and Marian ... and I always look forward to seeing her each year.

Theresa, if you read this, I'll be letting Marian know, and will be sending you an email as soon as my laptop is back up and running. Thinking about you... and sending you all the best of course.

This news brings tears to my eyes. Have been away from Mudcat for a few days so I'm just seeing this. I've never heard of Progressive Bulbar Palsy. I'm devastated that she will lose her ability to sing. My god, what a loss. Such an amazing voice. I first met Theresa in 2003 when she came with the Shellbacks to the Getaway. I was lucky to be at the gathering at Jerry and Ruth Rasmussen's and before that at a party at Judy Cook's in Maryland. In 2004 I was in England at the invitation of several Shellbacks and got to spend more time with her. The last time I saw her was the 2005 Getaway which has already been much mentioned here. I did not even know that Theresa had been ill.

Theresa, if you read this please know that I am thinking of you. I hope with all my heart that you will get the better of this. I would hate to see such a great voice silenced. I have been in awe of you and your voice and this news saddens me. Be well my friend.

Much love,

I have been bumping into Theresa in various singarounds at various festivals for as long as I've been coherant, for me she is folk's national institution. I echo the comment from above, I hope that if she's eventually going to lose the ability to sing that eventually is a long long time away.

A plan:
Carole and I spoke. She is sure Theresa does not want a singing, dancing 4' Maine lobster but thought she might enjoy a card from a friend. I have a pretty Guest Book with lined pages. I plan to have it out the John Robert's Concert on Saturday for all to sign and leave good wishes, a song, a complaint, whatever. It will attend the Portsmouth Festival and the Getaway and then go back to the UK to be delivered to Theresa. Sort of a mini-Mudcat Guitar.

So if you would like to participate, look me or Carole up. If you would like to include a card or photo, drawing, whatever might please her, make plans now.If you can not meet up with book and would like to send a note, card, photo, etc contact one of us for a snail mail address.

And spread the word.
Mary

We owe it to her to lend some of that courage back, should she need it. She laughed in the face of adversity before, I hope she can do it again.

I've just heard from Theresa that the hospital procedure is imminent.

She is due to have her op on Monday and hopes to be home by Friday. I'm sure we will all be thinking of her and sending good wishes.

She has asked me to thank all mudcatters for their good wishes. She has been overwhelmed by the response. I'm sure it has boosted her spirit and helped her to face the next phase of her life.

Hazel

Theresa is a very special lady. One of the highlights of our trip to England in 2005 was a singaround at a festival on the northeast coast. My friend Theresa stood up and sang one of my original songs. I have never been so proud. You are in our thoughts and surrounded by our love.

I managed to get to Manchester yesterday and spent a lovely afternoon with Theresa, so I thought that I would post an update.

Things have moved on at speed in the short time since I started this thread. Theresa is losing the ability to talk and is finding that the effort involved in doing so can leave her exhausted. She has purchased a machine that will do the talking for her (look out Stephen Hawking) but this will take some time to master.

Physically she is still weak from her spell in hospital and due to an NHS cock-up with her aftercare is only just coming to terms with the new feeding regime.

Given all this, her spirit is still visible and she is trying to cope in the best way she can. So keep the good thoughts flowing.

Hazel

Another update from Theresa ---   I know she won't mind me posting it for you all to see.

Hi Everyone Saturday 8/11/08
Kitchen/bathroom now fully functional and a joy to behold, wish I could say the same about me.
Days now taken up with adjusting to a new regime which after being over prescribed by the dietician has now been sorted but there is no joy anymore in looking forward to a really good meal. Although the meals come in umpteen flavours, feeding direct into the stomach just leaves an after taste of baby food in the mouth, .
Today I've started packing for a Musical Cruise down the Danube. Barcelona to Vienna with trips ashore to two operas and on board lectures etc. Flying down to Heathrow on Monday and hotel overnight as flight next day is 8.30am and I don't do mornings very well.
Prescribed food is now packed and has a piece of luggage all to itself, good job the airline will authorise extra baggage allowance for it
My get up and go is looking forward to a bit of R & R. Speech is now really awful and I have been loaned an aid called a Lightwriter. A small keyboard with two back to back screens , there is a speech function but it doesn't understand Lanky dialect, yet! It is very slow and the mechanical voice is out of this world. I'll have to apply myself to wade through the instruction book which when you look something up refers you to another page or two or three till in the end you have forgotten what you were looking for.

I understand coke helps if your feeding 'hole' starts to get bunged ever - my mum was fed like that for quite a while and that's what the specialist nurses used :-)

Glad to hear you aren't letting the B******* get you down and you are treating life as the challenge it is, and WINNING! I can imagine your poor little machine trying to keep up with some of your conversations. Are you going to teach it to sing shanties next?

Lots of love and hugs

Got a Xmas email from Theresa so I thought I would post an update

Hi Everyone

As you have gathered I have not sent paper Christmas cards this year again. This time the physicality of writing, enveloping, buying and sticking stamps and then taking them to the Post Box requires more effort and organisation than I can muster. However I really am grateful for all the cards I have received, and often there are tears in my eyes, a lump in my throat and a choking sensation at the wonderful comments
Though my shopping these days has shrunk drastically to things like tissues, kitchen rolls, toilet paper, wet wipes, fruit juices and cleaning things, which Kath Is happy to get for me, But getting cash requires an escort or if the weather is kind like today the local Coop for cash back is sufficient. and the staff cope very well thumbs up and fingers..
Any way now for some good news, and talk about Serendipity, after the recent news that my home would not be ideal for much longer. On Monday 8/12/08, an advert in the local COOP caught my eye, a one-bedroom first floor flat in Ingleside, a sheltered housing association scheme, at the other end of the same street where I live.
Kath phoned up for me on Tuesday, Wednesday morning we went to see the flat, it was ideal. Even though it is 1st floor, because it is built on a hill I can walk out of the flat door and along the corridor to the street level. Brilliant. So in the afternoon, downloaded the application form, 12 pages available in 10 different languages, and then completed form taken to the head office in Leigh.
Monday 15/12/08 a phone call indicated that I had the flat and that tomorrow the warden would ring about filling in the paperwork.
My mind began buzzing thinking what will have to be sorted, packed finalised.

As I say Serendipity, I had just booked another river cruise, with music. for Kath and me for over the New Year. (Leaving on 28th from Heathrow to Nuremburg, sail to Bamburg,Wurzburg, Miltenberg ,Rudesheim and Mainz, Heidelburg, Strasburg and back to London)

MND is such an anti social disease. Until I did not have the facility to speak, drink or swallow I did not realise how much of daily life and entertainment involves speech, food and drink. From TV adverts to actual programmes, from holiday adverts stressing excellent cuisine, to Christmas parties etc etc. It takes away the spontaneity of conversation, and also the need for planning a long term future, so I better live for today…..and if I'm honest, enjoy spending my inheritance while I can still get about fairly independently.

So, where are you planning to go next?
I guess it was chilly but it must have been a beautiful scenic trip. It's 29 years since I was in Strasbourg - and I still have the Janis Ian LP!
Hope your New home and the New year make you smile.
I've only to think of Warwick and I recall the fun nights that we had - not giving up 'til dawn. Happy days.

Lots of love
Hazel (Hissyfit)

I went to see Theresa on Friday on my way to Traditions Festival.

She is still fighting and has amazing strength of purpose although the Motor Neuron is relentless in its spread.

Speech is now non existent - she relies on the written word and miming to communicate, which must be both incredibly frustrating and exhausting at the same time.

Her balance is also much worse and she now has a walking frame to help her move around.

Having said all that - it's amazing how her spirit keeps shining through.
She's a very plucky lady.

Ken Schatz & I along with Sussex Carole & Andrew (Cranedriver) just had a lovely visit with Theresa. I'm so happy to have gotten the chance to visit. Ken & I last performed with Theresa at the Getaway a few yrs back. She asked one of us to sing a song she was lusting after, "Won't You Help Me To Raise 'Em" & not knowing who she was asking we (Ken & I) did it together. She hopped right onboard in her own style so we performed it as a trio later that night with my wife watching as Theresa gave my ass a huge squeeze that made me jump in mid verse much to the delight of all those laughing. Well I told Theresa she had my wife's permission to repete & she did with delight & gusto. What a woman, spirits still high & a smile that can still light up a dark alley. She did finally just sell her house & has plans, but I just mostly wanted to post & say that she's still the remarkable that's so delightful to be in the same room with.
Thanks Carole for bringing us by & for being such a good & close friend to her

Barry
