Subject: Need Chords to blues song
From: Banjoman_CO

Does anyone know the song entitled, "Three times Seven"? The words start off, "I'm 3X7, makes me 21, and it's nobody's business what I do". I could use the guitar chords to this song if anybody knows them. I would prefer it in the Key of A. I would be forever grateful.

Fred

Mississippi John Hurt sang a song with the words:

"I'm 3 X 7. I know what I want to do."

I can't remember the name of the song, but I'll look for it this weekend. I might even have the music.

Does anybody know it?

Subject: Lyr Add: THREE TIMES SEVEN (from Doc Watson)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 15 Jan 08 - 11:40 PM

Here are the lyrics from CowboyLyrics.com, as sung by Doc Watson, but I wouldn't call this a blues song. Is there another song with this title that IS blues?

THREE TIMES SEVEN
Cliffie Stone, Merle Travis

CHORUS: I'm three times seven and I do as I doggone please.
There ain't no woman this side of heaven gonna get me on my knees.
I'm three times seven, gals, and that makes twenty-one.
Lord, I just won't tame. I'm gonna be the same till I'm three times twenty-one.

I make my living a-loafing and I ain't never worked a day.
Working and me just can't agree. I reckon I ain't built that way.
I'm a rootin' tootin' rounder, gals. Now, don't you think I ain't.
I might get around to paintin' the town, but I never did like to paint. CHORUS

I'm a traveling troublemaker and I really feel my oats.
I ain't afraid of no big man or of any old gun he totes.
I'm the big duck in the puddle and don't you try to push me around, boy
I didn't come in like no lion just to go out like a lamb.

CHORUS: I'm three times seven and I do as I doggone please.
There ain't nobody this side of heaven gonna get me on my knees.
I'm three times seven and that makes twenty-one.
I'm wild and woolly and full of fleas. I'm a no-good son of a gun.

The phrase "3 x 7" meaning 21 years of age is common in very many blues songs. In John Hurt's version of CC Rider, they lyric goes:

I told you baby, and your mama done told you too
You're three times seven, you know what you wanna do.

The original post also includes the phrase "ain't nobody's business what I do," which is ALSO a very oft-quoted phrase in the blues lexicon, and is indeed the title of a very popular blues/jazz song recorded in countless different versions.

I wonder if any of the above responses actually nailed the song that the OP was trying to remember?

How about "Somebody's Been Fooling #1" by delta blues guitarist Big Joe Williams: "Tell me who, tell me who's been foolin' you. Well you three times seven woman, you don't know what you want to do." At least I THINK that's the lyric. And I assume it means 21 years of age, full grown, not a minor.

Subject: Lyr Add: THREE TIMES SEVEN BLUES (Memphis Minnie)
From: Jim Dixon

THREE TIMES SEVEN BLUES
As sung by Memphis Minnie on "Queen of the Delta Blues, Volume 2, CD D"

An' it's hard to be mistreated when you know you ain't done nothin' wrong. (2x)
An' it's hard to love a man when you know you can't keep him at home.

Well, I must get myself a single man, leave all you married mens alone.
Whee-hoo! Leave all you married mens alone.
'Cause you ain't nothin' but a wad o' trouble when you layin' up in my doggone home.

I don't know what's the matter, but a change must be made with me somewhere.
Whee-hoo! Change got to be made with me somewhere.
I been to the farm(?) all day long; I can't locate my man nowhere.

Oh, baby, don't you hear me callin' you?
Whee-hoo! Don't you hear your mama callin' you?
Well, I know you're three-times-seven, and you know just what you want to do.

This must be the original on which Doc Watson based his version by cutting some lines and scrambling the others around a bit:

THREE TIMES SEVEN
As sung by Merle Travis on the various-artists compilation "Country Road, Vol. 5"

CHORUS: I'm three times seven, and I do as I doggone please.
There ain't nobody this side o' heaven gonna get me on my knees.
I'm three times seven and I'm a-gonna have my fun.
Well, I just won't tame; I'm gonna be the same till I'm three times twenty-one.

I'm the big duck in the puddle; don't you try to push me around,
'Cause I don't come in like no lion just to go out like a lamb.
I'm three times seven, baby; that makes twenty-one.
Well, I love on sight an' I fly by night; I'm a no-good son of a gun.

I'm rough an' ready, an' I really feel my oats.
I ain't scared o' no livin' man or any gun he totes.
I'm a triflin' trouble-maker an' I'm really full of fun.
Wild and wooly and full of fleas, I'm a no-good son of a gun. CHORUS

I make my livin' a-loafin'; I never did work a day.
Workin' and me just don't agree 'cause I ain't built that way.
I'm a rootin'-tootin' rounder, gals, and don't you think that I ain't.
Well, I might get around to paintin' the town, but I never did like to paint. CHORUS

Also, “three times twenty seven” appears in
some artists version of
Ain’t Nobody’s Buisnes if I Do.

Freddie King for instance...
