Subject: RE: Klezmer in Cork (Oct 2008) From: Paul Burke Date: 10 Sep 08 - 03:18 AM Excellent. I hope someone plays Baym Reb'n in Kilfenora. Make sure every priest in Limerick comes along. |

Subject: RE: Klezmer in Cork (Oct 2008) From: GUEST,Philippa Date: 10 Sep 08 - 01:22 PM the slanders against the Limerick Jews happened a long long time ago. though there has been antisemitism in Ireland it hasn't been on any large scale, but I think minority groups have been marginalised here and it's only recently that I notice a real interest in multiculturalism the conference organiser came to Ireland from Poland. there has been a large annual Jewish cultural festival in Krakow for some years (I attended it in 1995) Would you make a similar snide comment regarding that celebration? |

Subject: RE: Klezmer in Cork (Oct 2008) From: Paul Burke Date: 11 Sep 08 - 03:22 AM Of course I would- antisemitism is still rife in Poland today. But not universal- and read Primo Levy's "The Truce". And the Limerick events need remembering at a time when racism is rearing its head in Ireland. |

Subject: RE: Klezmer in Cork (Oct 2008) From: Gulliver Date: 17 Sep 08 - 10:42 PM Thanks Philippa for the heads-up. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to make it, though may have to leave early if I can't find someone to take my place in Dublin on Sunday evening. And I've no intention of bringing up religion or politics--that's a sure way of spoiling what promises to be an entertaining weekend! I still live in "Little Jerusalem" here... |

Subject: RE: Klezmer in Cork (Oct 2008) From: GUEST Date: 13 Oct 08 - 01:10 PM I don't know whether there will be next time, but this notice first went on screen a month ago. No, I don't look at the site every day either (though I do often scroll to have a look at what's been posted in the past 3 or 7 days) |

Subject: RE: Klezmer in Cork (Oct 2008) From: GUEST,Philippa Date: 19 Oct 08 - 09:27 AM a rainy Sunday here in Cork it was like a céilidh last night; most of the crowd danced while the bands played. Vivi and Klezmer Klub are away home to London today but the Fireflies band (which also has a singer of Yiddish songs)is based in Killarney, co Kerry! I didn't see Gulliver in the crowd last night. |

Subject: RE: Klezmer in Cork (Oct 2008) From: GUEST,Philippa Date: 19 Oct 08 - 09:29 AM forgot to say, this is plenty of warning, Klezmer Keilidh at Cecil Sharp House in London 25 Jan 2009. That's plenty of warning (but it's not in Ireland). though really on that date it should be a Robbie Burns Night. |

Subject: RE: Klezmer in Cork (Oct 2008) From: Jack Campin Date: 19 Oct 08 - 06:30 PM The Edinburgh University Jewish Society used to run a regular "Rabbi Burns Night". I think they used vegetarian haggis, and I'm not sure if anybody even now makes a kosher non-veggie one. |

Subject: RE: Klezmer in Cork (Oct 2008) From: GUEST,Nick Roth (yurodny) Date: 22 Nov 08 - 03:53 PM DUBLIN KLEZFEST! '08 @ST. ANDREW'S LANE THEATRE THURSDAY 27TH NOVEMBER WORKSHOPS 4-6PM PERFORMANCES 7.30 – LATE TICKETS €19.50/17.50 Following on from its massive success in April '07, Dublin Klezfest! returns with an even bigger and better programme, featuring a variety of educational workshops, presentations and live performances from some of the world's leading exponents of klezmer music. The Klezfest has taken place in many other cities around the world, including New York, London and St. Petersburg, Kiev and Toronto. It celebrates the instrumental music of the Jewish people of Eastern Europe; a form that has had a major worldwide revival at several points in the last two centuries, with the present decade no exception. At the heart of the Irish extravaganza is the clarinettist Merlin Shepherd and singer Polina Shepherd. Long-standing collaborators with most of the music world's most important klezmer ensembles and individuals, the pair have an immense knowledge of the music and will be giving two free workshops to the public at 4pm and 5pm, in 'niggunim' (wordless sung prayer melodies) and 'make your instrument sing in yiddish' examining the connections between the voice and the instrument. They will also perform as the 'Sound and Light Cinematic Duo' where they will debut their soundtrack to a collection of rare silent film footage of the Jewish community's ritual life in the Ukraine at the turn of the century, performing the songs that would have accompanied such scenes at that time. Augmented by several of London's foremost klezmorim (members of Shekoyokh and Bucimis) Dublin-based Yurodny will be a full 13-piece orchestra for the event, before the North Strand Kontra band return to some of their early klezmer roots material and also perform new pieces for the occasion. |
