I've been playing a Cort Artisan 5 string bass for about a year now semi-professionally, and I can say it's awesome. I've been playing right around 20 years. The bass has a 34" scale, but I have played all the way down in the A' scale with success. My band plays a lot of Meshuggah covers and jazz-based death metal. All our stuff is drop scale. This bass has Bartolini soap bars and the Bartolini pre-amp circuit, and it's sweet. It's neck-thru and has 24 frets. If I wanted to get any better I would have to invest in a Mobius or a Warwick Dolphin. But get this! I paid $365 for mine with a case! This is every-bit as nice as the Tobius basses I've played at around $2500.00. I always get compliments at the end of the show on its looks and tone. If you get a chance to purchase a Cort Artisan bass below $700.00, buy it immediately! To the dudes and chicks at Cort, I want a 35" or 36" scale bass with frets, preferably in 5 – 7 string range, neck-thru, string-thru, large tuner head and huge bridge with bad-ass pickups. If you make it for around $2000, I'll buy it!

Cort is a Korean company that makes very high quality guitars. Most of their business is making guitars for other companies behind the scenes. Cort secretly makes guitars for some very big brand names. The actual Cort brand is my favorite and I have several.

My husband has played one and found it remarkably good value. He normally plays a Sada Yairi, a D18 and a Larivee OM and didn't find the Cort significantly out of the ballpark.

I'll echo David on that one. Since this thread came out, I've played about a dozen Corts. They've payed a lot of attention to design, and the sound is better than you'd expect from the price. I doubt very much if they "fall apart". You can easily tell a solidly built instrument from a fragile one, and these seem fine.

It's been 2-1/2 years since I started this thread, so I thought I'd jump back in here and let you know what I think of that Cort now.

I still have my '63 Guild and still love it, but since so few people know how to mike an acoustic these days, I finally gave up and plugged in. I had a Slimline transducer put in it and bought a Fishman preamp and that little baby is my main workhorse now. It seems impervious to temperature and humidity changes and with a set of medium phosphor-bronze strings packs a fair amount of punch.

Would I recommend one? You bet. For a low-end guitar, it's as good as I've ever seen and some of Cort's high-enders will hold their own among the Larivees, Taks and Taylors that I've played.

First chance I've had to get back to this. THANKS to all for the input. Was good to hear the positive vibe. I've learned that you sometimes have to take a shop owner -- even a dealer/luthier -- with a grain of salesman salt. What they carry/have in stock is of course the best and what they don't, well, "you don't want that," or so it can seem. An honest opinion can be hard to come by. Unless you're talking to Mudcats, that is!

I have a Cort, went looking for a little Sammick, but they had stopped making them but was shown a Cort....... now I am not a good guitarist but I really like the feel and sound of it.....

friends of mine who play Matens, Takemines, Washburns (not spelt right I'm sure) reckon it is a great little guitar... and it has been pinched on many an occasion when theirs have been out being fixed to play in concerts....

mine came with a Fishman pickup already in it.... and is apparently a copy of a Taylor

and it hasn't fallen to bits in the Ozzie heat yet.....

I'll throw in this much.....Last summer ddw (david) stopped by our campground on his way back from a week of blues pickin' and he had the Cort with him and it sounded pretty damn good...as did david! If you've never heard david sing BTW, this man has got a "sweet" blues voice too!!!

Just a follow-up on this old thread . . . anything new to report from anyone regarding the Corts? I'm looking at a Earth 900 parlor model. A local dealer/luthier who used to sell Corts told me they tend to fall apart, which got me concerned. THANKS.

I own an Earth 200. It's a heavily built guitar with Mahogany sides and a good-quality solid spruce top. I'm using a martin purchased late this winter for gigging right now but may put a good pickup in the Cort and take it out as the Martin seems quite sensitive to humid weather and hot sticky musicians.

I'd buy another Cort anytime. They are on the web. The Earth 100 is a low-end model but I'd keep it if I were you, it is perfect for street busking, festivals, etc.

ddw. Like most of the import guitars today, they're pretty good. Don't worry about brand names. They're all made in about five factories and often carry different names in different parts of the world. The biggest company in the world (I'm told) is Samick, and they market under different brand names. My friend Aengus Finnan, who is a pro, is real happy with his Cort. They have a nice design as well.

The folk club I belong to raffled off a Cort guitar recently and I won it, but I've never heard of them before. It's a dreadnaught body, made in Korea and has "Earth 100" embossed inside -- I presume it's the model name. My first thought when I won it was that I'd trade it for something better, but was surprised at both the sound and its easy touch. Now I'm thinking I might keep it and maybe put a pickup in it. If anyone knows anything about them -- opinions, how long they've been around, price ranges, etc., I'd love to hear from you.
