Subject: ADD: Sampler Song (Bill Staines) From: Joe Offer Date: 12 Sep 08 - 08:06 PM I know you requested chords, but it's also nice to have lyrics: The Sampler Song (Bill Staines) Just a little to the left of the big front window In the house where I was born and raised Up on the wall, all framed in golden And sewn with love, hung a simple phrase. And when the world grew dark and troubled And the cold hard times seemed there to stay Those little words spelled out their treasure And shone a light on a weary day. "I cannot play, I cannot sing But I can try like anything." Those little words spelled out their treasure And shone a light on the weary day. Against the wall, the old piano Brought me to tears from time to time When Mama played her gentle music It spoke to me in endless rhyme. I could not play, I could not sing But I could try like anything When Mama played her gentle music It spoke to me in endless rhyme. Now and then the years bring back the hours When a kindly word was a worthy friend And that little phrase sewn 'round with flowers Brings a gift of love and some light again. "I cannot play, I cannot sing But I can try like anything." Those little words sewn 'round with flowers Bring a gift of love and some light again. Those little words sewn 'round with flowers Bring a gift of love and some light again. Words and music by Bill Staines, © by Mineral River Music/BMI from the 1995 Bill Staines album, Looking for the Wind lyrics found at www.acousticmusic.com and corrected with recording - "sewn" and "shone," for example. I've never paid attention to this song before. What a lovely song! -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: Sampler Song (Bill Staines) From: wendyg Date: 07 Jun 21 - 03:28 PM Bill said once that he wanted the G chord (or equivalent) on "try" to be D with the suspended 4th that's so common in coutry music. If you can figure out a wauy to play that, it really adds tp the sound. For a good recording of this song, see Caryl P. Weiss's LP, "With Her Head Tucked Underneath Her Arm" (if you can find it!). wg |
