I will let you know. I know it won't be anytime soon though. They are super cool nice people. We had a blast together. I am hoping next summer they will be back at the Pennington Folk Fest. When I do get a date set to go I will let you know. It may be a while though I have son much going on.

Melissa -- I wasn't at Richmond, but the rest of our band was, so yes, we're THAT Checkered Past.

Jayto -- do let me know when you're going to be here. I think I'd feel completely eclipsed by any member of the Rain Dogs, but I know by reputation that they're very nice folks.

Coldjam -- I don't know the answer to your question about buskers, but I can find out. I think you just set up and go -- we have a time or two for First Friday events. But maybe that's a different deal. I'll find out if you want me to.

We went to the City Market (shoppping) and saw/heard some buskers (we tipped 'em of course) and wondered if you just showed up to do that, or had to contact someone in advance...dja know? Mother Earth News eh? WyoWoman you're my hero!

Jayto, my sister turned us on to the Raindogs just last year, didn't see them around while we were there tho.

I know, I know. I disappeared for a while, EJ. But not quite off the edge of the Earth. The magazine is Mother Earth News, not Mother Jones -- although that would be fun, too. And I'm not on Mother Earth's staff anymore, although I'm about 30 paces away. Still at the same publishers, just with different magazines.

Yes, let me know next time you're in KC and we'll meet up. I'd love for you to meet and jam with my bandmates -- a splendid lot -- and also some of the other musicians here. It's a great community.

Frank, do you know dates and times for your gig at City Market? I know right where that is and if you're there at a time I can get there, I'd love to hear you. If not, I'll help spread the word. I live about an hour and a half east of Kansas City, so it's a bit of a trek for me during the week.

Jayto, yes, I've heard the Rain Dogs on numerous occasions and really like their music. Individual members have been at jams I've attended and they're wonderful musicians.

Wyowoman, I thought you'd dropped off the edge! I thought about you just the other night when CNN had an editor from Mother Jones on as a commentator. He was a yupster with a nice necktie and blow-dried hair and I thought "my! how times has changed!" Wasn't that the rag you were working for?
Anyway, I get to KC once in a blue moon and maybe will try to hook up a jam next time.

Of course, this week, many of the stalwarts were at Winfield, camped in the mud and glop from a recent flood, but jammin' they little hearts out.

Still, there were jams to be found. Check www.folkjam.org next time you're in the 'hood and you can see what's available. Or just PM me and I'll get in touch. The way I met the people who have now become my band was through Mudcat. I moved to Kansas in 2001 and within three weeks had found a jam by way of Mudcateer GaryT. Two of the people now in our band were there and we were off and running. At least off and singing. ...

Well damn ya' KC.....Here I was all set for getting a source for some great Blackberry or maybe an old-fashioned Quince and you go off the deep end about music ferchrissakes. Yeah, so there's some good pickers and all.........How the hell can you compare that to a finely done Rhubarb jam? The Rain Dogs are terrific and very well known in these parts. If you come to KC to jam, be sure and let me know. A friend of mine has a jam at his place every second Saturday of the month that has been going on for 30 years: a local phenomenon!

The best jam I have been in for years was with a band from Kansas City. About 2 months ago after the Pennington Folk Festival in Kentucky me and a band called The Rain Dogs from Kansas City jammed 2 nights in a row. We played until sunrise both nights. We had local some local musicians as well. A piano player , upright bass player, sax player, and a drummer. Everyone that was there was amazing musicians. I am going to KC sometime to jam with them again sometime coming up. I have 2 very close friends that were hired by the international house of prayer and moved to KC. They are on the road all the time with someone Eddie James or something like that. They were telling me that KC is on fire when it comes to playing.

Oh, forgot: It's also home to www.folkjam.org -- which you definitely should know about if you're a musician who likes to play with others. It's a search site that lists jams all over the world (so if you have a jam that's not listed there, send the in the information and get yourselves on the map).

OK, maybe I'm prejudiced because it's where I make music these days, but, damn, Kansas City has a huge music scene.

Any night of the week will find several public jams going on -- folk, bluegrass, Celtic, fiddle, country -- plus the legendary blues and jazz jams on the weekend. In addition, there's an enormous community of somewhat interconnected jams that happen in private homes and little out-of-the-way bars, restaurants and coffee houses.

There's certainly never a reason for any musician in this area to be without music pals, but I think it's even bigger than that. I say Kansas City and its surroundings is the Jam Capital of the World (maybe the Universe. I mean, who knows exactly where that "Music of the Spheres" stuff is coming from?).

Any contenders want to challenge this claim?
