Dan,
Thanks for the info. I was hoping to give it for Dec. 25th gifts--but...

Thanks to everyone who is making these CDs happen. And thanks for including one of my songs. I do realize the difficult work hat goes into a production of this sort.

Art

In keeping with that spirit, let's start a new thread when we have CD information. I kind of feel like this thread is about a very personal memorial from Kendall to his friend.

And a beautiful, fitting memorial it is, too.

Dan

Gordon Bok sang the Goodnight Loving Trail last weekend. That alone will be worth the price of the CD. Shivers up and down the spine time.

I do, Art. Kendall and Jacqui have been working on it too, from the beginning. It's called "Singing Through the Hard Times," and I'm very hopeful it will be out before long - we're pushing to get it out as soon as possible. I've spent the last several days working on the liner notes. It's going to be a wonderful collection, with several Mudcatters involved.

That said, these things are always subject to big delays, so I'm hesitant to start naming dates right now. I should have better information to give everyone within a couple of weeks, including ()I hope) a solid release date!

A tree is tangible and beautiful but the really lasting memorial is the difference he made and the people he has influenced, even when they do not know it.

Update.

Kendall found a larger sapling and that seems to have survived the move.

He has a cousin in Machias who has a lady friend who owns the local stone masonry business and has made the stone. They visited yesterday and the stone has now been laid in place.

You can see the photo here.

There is a stone mason within walking distance of my house. A young man, third or fourth generation stone carver. I will speak with him. The shipping alone I think might make it prohibitive, Sorcha. A very kind and generous offer.

OK, gang...I talked to Mark. He has a piece of slightly polished light grey granite, about a foot square, except that it isn't 'square'. It isn't 'oval' either, but more of a square with rounded corners, and 4" thick. Weighs about 25 lbs. I can pick it up EASILY. It would cost 'us' about $100-150 for the rock and the lettering.

If I do this right, it will look something like the below:

IN MEMORY OF
             UTAH PHILLIPS
       May 15 1935 - May 24 2008

Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips

Subject: RE: Memorial to Utah Phillips
From: Sorcha

I have posted a prototype here, on Flickr! Please veiw and let me know by e mail or PM if this is acceptable.

Bear in mind that the 'rock' doesn't have to be a polished slab...it can be a 'thunder egg'/glacier rock, or nearly anything 'hard' like marble or granite. Slate is out. So is anything crystalline like quartz.

I suspect however that if the surface is not flat it might cost more. Don't know for sure about that tho.

Kendall, I don't have your email anymore. Mine is sorcha at netcommander dot com

Kendall, your little oak will grow to suit the site far more successfully than a larger tree in much the same way that Utah grew to fit his own big-hearted world.

You chose very well.

Lovely idea. When my first husband dies the college where he worked asked me to plant a tree and they put a simple marble plaque on it. It is a flowering cherry and the college is used for the music school the children attend on Saturday mornings so I get to pass it each week. Very much keeping memories 'alive'.
